Chael p sonnen is the most humble champion this world has ever seen. Ever since he retired and vacated all his belts, west linn has become the safest place to live in mostly all of America. If you google west linn one of the most ask questions is “ is west linn dangerous” and the answer shows that west linn’s violent crime rate is well below the national average. Violent crimes like assault, rape, murder and armed robbery happen less often in west linn than in most of America. All because chael p sonnen lives there. I hated to see him leave mma but he left to protect his city and that my friends is the most selfless thing I’ve ever heard.

Back in 2000 I was training with a excellent Thai trainer who wanted me to move to wrestling. I was in my early 20s and had strong conditioning and was prime to advance in the sport. Or so I thought. I was sent to Randy to train with him and spoke to him at his rockwood gym which was a mile from my apartment. He offered me a chance to join and said I was just the right size to help him train for a up coming fight. Catch was I had to pay some small amount a month. Randy had his guy call me to set me up in the system with auto withdrawal from my bank. At the time I was so broke struggling to feed my family and house us, I couldn’t afford the messily 75$ a month Randy wanted for me to join his gym. I got called like 2 or 3 times by some guy from Randy’s gym telling me to come down and start. But I told him I couldn’t afford it and that was the last I heard of them. A few months later I stopped training due to life. Then had a motorcycle accident an destroyed my right leg. That was the end of me ever kicking anything other then rocks down the road. I ended up with a titanium rod in my femur holding it together and lost all skill what so ever I ever had In my strong leg. No dexterity no strength. Nothing. Like a limp noodle for years. Took me 5 years to be able to run again after that wreck. Guess what sport took off and guess who was on prime time tv? 😆 Randy. My old m t trainer ended up training a small had full of guys who made it to the ufc and got some pretty big fights. It was a Weird feeling to watch someone who trained you be ring side at a Vegas fight. Talk about feeling like a has been. 😂 more like a never was. Biggest mistake in my life. Being broke at the wrong time. 75 messily dollars. 😒 sheesh.... 75$.......

What I love about Chael when he talks fighting is that he's always positive. I don't recall critizicing another fighter in regards to his fighting. He totally blasts them on other stuff like press and promoting, but not the fighting. He clearly loves the sport and loves what everybody does with it. He's curious and open minded. Good for him. That's what makes him elite in my book.

Hey Chael, football is a pretty interesting sport, especially with practice. You’ll actually see that as you go through high school, to college, to NFL, they’ll scrimmage less as the skill goes up. When you get to the NFL you know all the basic techniques like tackling by heart, whereas in high school and college you’ll see more scrimmaging because they still need to learn fundamentals. Training is very interesting to me because you can basically have success with anything as long as you believe in it and have purpose behind it.

Hey Chael, what do you think would have happened if you had made it to the second round with Jones and got the DQ/DNF win off the toe? Do you think it would have kept you in UFC longer? I'm inclined towards this weird belief that if you had made it to round two and won that way that you honestly wouldn't be in that chair now(at least not as watched.) See you would have been the one guy to beat Jones but chances are that if you lost the rematch you would have just been a guy who challenged two of the most dominant fighters then had them come back, Jones would look unstoppable still but he'd actually be able to draw because of risk. I think when you broke his toe and he beat you still, it was probably his peak and the start of his interest decline. I also think that one of the reasons people came to love you is because of your losses where people were like "the sunofabitch almost pulled it off." It's exciting, you talked all the smack but you didn't just give your all on the microphone you also went at trained killers like "fuck you, you can't wrestle like me.". It beats the guy with every physical advantage who plays the safest style game in every fight. Jon Jones hasn't "banged" one time in a striking exchange. I dunno, my opinion. But yeah, any thoughts? Just a fun hypothetical.
