Teh(Tea) Halia(Ginger) & Teh Masala Chai is a different beverages, not Teh Masala Chai in Malaysia is called Teh Halia... Actually, the real Nasi Kandar is just Plain White with mix of gravy pour into a rice, vegetables & proteins..when you use nasi beriani, is no more called nasi kandar, just normal nasi beriani with vege, protein & gravy.. 😊

Great to see you guys enjoying Penang like a local! When a Malaysian goes to Penang for holiday, 90% of the itinerary is eating. From breakfast, brunch, lunch, dessert, dinner, supper 😀. Just like any other meals such as pizza and burgers, there are authentic versions and there are less authentic or budget or over the top versions of cendol, nasi kandar etc. The simple shaved ice and soupy cendol is the original and best version. And penang nasi kandar is the benchmark and most original because of its fresh ingredients, authentic and flavorful curries/spices, variety of choices. Northern states of Malaysia have more authentic nasi kandars because of Indian muslims who settled down there many generations ago. But there are many indian or mamak restaurants in KL and all over Malaysia who are actually just selling rice with simple curries and calling them nasi kandar. This is a travesty to me 😅

Rojak usually has pineapple, bangkuang/sengkuang (a kind of local turnip), cucumber, possibly green mango, possibly fried dough sticks (cruller). The sauce is sweet soy, belachan (prawn paste), sugar, possibly some chilli and chopped peanuts. There are dishes here that mix up the sweet and saltiness. (A bit like salt to caramel, or even a bit of bacon to desserts.)

@akbarohara7998

Rojak is usually eaten as a snack. Interestingly there are chinese, malay and indian versions of rojak. The one you had was chinese rojak. Malay rojak does not have the crunchy crullers or squid. Mainly fruit and veg. The sauce is similar though. Indian rojak has totally different contents and sauce and can be eaten as a main meal. Penang is famous for the indian rojak, locally called pasembor.

@@RajeshRavindranathan I think the common laksa fish used is mackerel (Indian Mackerel) unless the maker uses canned sardines.. Why? Fresh sardines are usually not sold in the market.

Malaysia has some really good fine dining Western, Middle Eastern, Japanese, Korean and Malaysian restaurants as well. Just that Malaysia is known worldwide for the best street food! I go there just to eat street food. Maybe the best in the world!

Malaysia has had the largest Japanese migration in the world for the last 14 years as the Japanese have chosen Malaysia as a safe destination to live in case their own country is destroyed by earthquakes or war. It's the only country in the world outside Japan where a Japanese University, shrines, schools and about a dozen Japanese malls exist.

Not just Japan. Even China has opened its first University in Malaysia and Korea is planning one too. They already have schools and restaurants and shops. Malaysia seems to be the chosen location for nationals from these three countries to migrate.
