I was in Costa Maya in April, and it seems to basically be a tourist trap. Once you’re in the shops area, there’s no signs showing how to get to the exit. It gets you off the ship to sell you stuff you really don’t need.

Odd man out here! Always had a great time in Costa Maya. You should check out Maya Chan Beach if you haven't already. Shout out to Mauricio and the crew at the Krazy Lobster too. Both will take great care of you real good. And the tequila still flows in the rain. Nothing but love for Costa Maya!

Love Maya Chan and I was just about to comment that. It’s a great beach resort and we look forward to it every cruise we to costa maya. Plus the owners are some the kindest people you’ll ever meet, and they cruise often so they understand the cruising struggles.

My husband and son went on a tour with a local tour guide to the Pyramids and they loved it! They learned a lot of history from this local guide that they wouldn’t have otherwise. They highly recommend it. We find Freeport to be boring.

We went to Freeport after Hurricane Maria I think. Our Island tour was basically a depressing tour of destruction and economic depression :(

NCL Breakaway doesn’t spend much of the day there. Gets there around 8:00 and all aboard is around 1:00. Makes me too nervous to try an excursion.

Exploring the local town on foot is my favorite thing about any port of call. In Costa Maya, there is no town outside the port. Once you have visited the port, there isn't much reason to go back unless you plan an excursion or buy a day pass to a water park or resort.

I use to love going there when it was all the local people there with there crafts. As crafts they made. When they changed it to what it is now. Stuff you can find anywhere. Was at one time was my favorite port. Now I could care less about that port. Was there about 3 months ago. I did find one of the local painters I use to buy from all the time. But we could go somewhere else.

Only been there once, the weather was clear, but the water was super choppy. That walk, though, from the ship to the port! That would have been the one time that I would have hired one of those rickshaw rides, but I persevered and made it ashore and back. I never stay ashore very long anyway. I look for my souvenirs and head back.

We went to the Krazy Lobster on the beach. Short cab ride and cheap beer. it was a good time.

I agree with those who recommend Maya Chan All Inclusive Beach Resort. We have been on over 20 cruises and Maya Chan is our favorite. We avoid Western Caribbean cruises that don’t stop in Costa Maya for that reason. The servers bring food to you on the beach or in your cabana. They’ll even bring drinks to you in the water if you’re floating in an inter tube. It’s a fantastic beach day!! 🏝

We've snorkeled in the Rain. It's interesting. Warm Ocean water and Cold rain on your back. If I made it to #2 or 3 shots, someone would have to carry me back to the ship.

I rode a Bicycle down that way last time I was in Costa Maya with Royal. Went to a nice private beach with Kayaking and what not. It was nice.

We went to Jaime's Blue Reef in May when in Costa Maya. Best margarita I've every had! Food was good. Had a massage that was great. So glad to see you feature this place. We'd definitely go back.

My family took a cruise to Costa Maya a few weeks ago. We felt the stop was nothing more than a tourist stop. We spent maybe 30 minutes looking at the shops and then went back on the Mardi Gras. It was more fun watching the Carnival Dream dock at the pier across from us.

I visited Jamie's. Was solo. Had made reservations in advance. Wasn't crowded. great food strong drinks. They give me chair with shade. Was glad I went. Too bad you had a gloomy weather day.

Looks like you had a better time and better service than we did in March at Jaime’s. We waited over 90 min for a Coke. Told three times they were coming, finally my daughter went up to the bar and all they had was diet. Thankfully, Jaime had recommended we not do the all inclusive because we weren’t arriving until like 1:00. We got nachos and 2 bottles of water. I had quite a bit of money allocated for that day but we left after spending very little of it. Not impressed. If we end up in Costa Maya again, we’ll go to Maya Chan (it was full) or stay on the ship.

I have been to Costa Maya 3-4 times. I certainly don't choose a cruise based on this stop but its OK. Food and booze is cheap. The last 2 visits we just took a taxi to the area you were at and find a place to sit and order a cheap bucket of beer. The best place I went to is Maya Chen. It's an all inclusive. It's very nice, not to busy, they cap the number of people that can go and it typically sells out. Only negative is its 15-20 min drive away on a very bumpy road.

I only remember this port as the one with the free swimming pool. We got tickets to the aviary and fed the birds. Then we spent the rest of the day in the pool.

They have a cool aviary. :) I’ve been there once. It’s a purpose built port for cruising. I thought it was nice. Very hot there. The main problem I have with Mexico near the tourist area is there are no deals. The USD is strong when compared to the peso, however, you pay US prices when clearly you could receive a deal. Last, I’m not a haggler so I guess I don’t have fun when I shop. We have several future cruises with Costa Maya. We will probably leave the port and check out downtown.

I will take Costa Maya over Nassau any day. I went to Nassau once and that was plenty. I won't even book a cruise now if Nassau is on the itinerary and if we somehow end up there I'm staying on the ship

Been here once. Went to one of the many beach club/bar/restaurants (the Tropicante, now closed) to the south of the port. Apart from all the seaweed (they had barriers to try and keep it out), it was pleasant.

We docked there one day. It began to rain, nearly a monsoon. The port area was flooded. We practically had to swim our way down that long, long, long dock. It was dark and windy, and SCARY! No, not, never again!

Scuba diving? During and after storms is the worst time to go in the ocean unless you actually WANT a dangerous shark encounter. A documentary asked all these victims of shark attacks what the weather was like, and the water too, when they were attacked--virtually all said it was a cloudy, gray day, or a storm, the water much colder than usual, etc. They could feel the water was coming from further out at sea, it was colder, cloudy water, sand whipped up instead of clear warm blue water and bright sun they were used to where they swam. Some reported their other excursions had been canceled because of rain and wind, so they had gone to an unfamiliar placetib because so many people had elected to stay at the resort instead of going diving. The schools of fish were missing, and then a bunch of tiger sharks attacked. The girl killed with her mom watching, trying to help her, the pregnant woman along the Florida beaches, another guy in the Bahamas, there were more... Evidently, there are a lot of reasons: Storms cause the fish that sharks usually eat to leave for calmer waters. Storms cause the currents to change so different, possibly more likely to strike sharks to come closer to shore--colder water makes them think they are further from shore. And the rougher waters stir up the sand and other debris so that fish and sharks cannot see people as well, mistake you for prey fish or seal, etc. Don't scuba dive on storm days! Don't go for swims in the oceans where storms are either. It's just one day that you miss your activity but it's a lifetime of struggling without an arm or a leg, or without muscle tissue on your thigh, calf, or back.

CostaMaya as I was told was built by the cruise lines, when you book a tour to go to the Mayan ruins you must pass through a guarded gate to get i to the real Mexico. The city is pretty much run by by the cruise company’s. Not a fun place, drink and eat on the ship it’s cheaper and better

I’ve been quite alotta places but I’ve never Heard of Costa Maya. Is it one of those stops more or less created to be a cruise stop? I already feel that way about ‘private islands.’ For the most part, these kinds of places seem to be a way for the cruise lines stop ‘somewhere’ and save them money.

Hate to disagree but my Wife and I love Costa Maya 🇨🇷 ❤. We have been twice the last time was this past March on the WONDER OTS the week after it's first sailing.
