Good review. Not familiar with this brand. Great looking vintage style dive watch. You hit on all the positives about the quality of the finish. Love the slim bezel and the no date. It does indeed remind me of a 70’s era Diver. I’d buy this were it not for the fact that I have too many watches already and am trying hard to deal with my affliction as a watch obsessive. Great job!

Thanks for the review. I too was looking for a review of this watch before it posted on MassDrop. I received my watch a few days ago with glee until I noticed a piece of black lint or mark in the 1 o’Clock indice. I was shocked and returned the watch for a full refund. The watch was so beautiful but that little flaw was an eyesore. I wanted to support a local company as I live in Jersey, but it’s truly unfortunate that I got a dud.

A little dull and uninspiring, although clean styling. But is it Swiss made ? Is it automatic ? Best deals I ever got on a brand new Swiss watch in box with official papers and guarantees from the showroom was £250 on Raymond Weil Sport 200 meters with steel bracelet but better still - Hamilton Xcopter chronograph Valjoux automatic for £350 - both in London, UK in 2011.

It looks nice but in terms of value and what constitutes a "watch company", I don't know why so many of you guys indulge these micro-brands who know nothing about actually building a watch and charge, what in real terms, constitute enormous prices. 1) The heading of the video is misleading. "Under 300" ?? I went to the website and this watch sells for $469 2) Yet again, as with all micros....the "watch" part of the "watch" is something they didn't make....an off the shelf SEIKO NH36. If you want a Seiko watch; which this is; why not buy a Seiko watch. If you want to argue that this is not a Seiko watch, I would argue that it is. The bit that tells you the time, was made by Seiko. The movement is the important bit. There is, as noted by other comments no indication as to where the casing was made. 3) Chinese manufacturing can be both precise and highly impressive. Having lived and worked there a cumulative total of 6 years, a good price for a Chinese watch is 20 to 50, not almost 500. (Chengdu, Jinan, Shanghai) 4) Why buy a Seiko dive watch with a non Japanese case for 469 when you can get a real Seiko dive watch such as the SKX009 for 230 AUD, or about (180? USD) The real one only costs half as much. 5) If you want a Seiko engine but not located in a real Seiko watch, another option for this market is something like a "Glycine" "Combat Sub". A glycine combat sub will cost you the same and give you an in-house Swiss movement, a Swiss casing, and has a casing which is far more elegant. Specifically the casing on a Glycine is 10.6MM, almost 3 MM thinnner than this micro-brand. If you love the aesthetics, then go for it. From a functional, horological, engineering or value viewpoint, I just think you would do much better for cheaper. The numbers on the bezel don't even line up evenly! and....this American thing of always saying "price point". You do not need the word "point". "price" already implies it is a point unless it is a "price level" or a "price range". Nobody was saying this phrase 10 years ago, its a current trend and to an English teacher is as annoying as hell. :) Live long and prosper....dude.

Simon Inglis I got this watch for $249 which I state a few times in the video. I don’t agree with much you say. It dosn’t make sense to me. Is an IWC watch with an ETA movement a Swatch and not an IWC? Stay fun at parties 😀
@Bert-xi1dn
@Bert-xi1dn 6 жыл бұрын
No, both are ETA watches. I'm with Simon here.
@TimeAndCrown
@TimeAndCrown 6 жыл бұрын
Bert 0324 How is IWC an ETA watch? It dosn’t make sense! My question: If Mercer is a Seiko for using Seiko movement is IWC then a Swatch for using ETA? (ETA is owned by Swatch).
@Bert-xi1dn
@Bert-xi1dn 6 жыл бұрын
Watch On Yes, I see what you mean. I may not be consistent in the way I look at it. However, if Eterna was still an independent brand furnishing the movement for IWC, then yes, I would consider IWC to be an Eterna. But no, I don't think the Swatch group producing the ETA movements and putting it into brands belonging to the Swatch group makes all those brands Swatches. Admittedly I'm not thinking with mathematical precision here and I appreciate you taking the time for responding to this. Now back to Simon. Doesn't he deserve a more elaborate answer than simply not agreeing? He does not strike me as someone who is trolling (believe me, nor am I).
@simoninglis7437
@simoninglis7437 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Bert for your comments and moral support. You're right, its not my intention to troll or even to mildly annoy anyone. Mr Watch On, I'm sorry if I hit a raw nerve or was too adversarial. I do in fact like your videos, I did subscribe and i did do a thumbs up. The questions I raised are really part of a macro question which is worth thinking about. In a global economy and with increasing specialization and division of labor, how we describe our product, our business or our identity is a challenge in branding, marketing, and perhaps psychology. Is the IWC an Eta because of its movement. No, its an IWC with an Eta movement. Therefore a consumer would be wise to compare it in value with other watches which also have an Eta movement particularly the same one. I appreciate your analogy, but surely an IWC has quite a bit of quality control with the other bits ( casing, dial, hands, crown, band or bracelet) whereas this one, ( which is an aesthetically beautiful watch) has a casing of unspecified origin. Even with the dozens of Swiss companies that have beautiful watches but non-in-house movements, my own viewpoint is that the movement is still the main "bit". The part that tells the time, the part that is intricate and monumentally difficult to manufacture, and the part that people train for 4, 5 or more years to work on. I confess as a small business person I am fascinated by where one locates oneself on the value-adding continuum or spectrum. If I said locally to my friends that I was a bike company, but that the components are all Italian from Campagnolo, I have them assembled in Hangzhou, then ship them here, where I paint my name on them, and a nice lady in Belgium designs for me a beautiful website, then the identity and value of the product would be interesting, and calling myself a bike builder would be a bit of a stretch. Mercer's name is after a long-dead american General who has no connection at all with the American chaps who run the business. The complex bit of their product is made by amazing Japanese manufacturers who do what they do as a very long term, this-is-my-life level professionals and the other bits around the movement are beautiful..yes....and of unknown origin, suggested by several of us to be Chinese. I guess I don't really have a problem with any of that other than price, branding, and declaring what was made where. I have a profound respect for Japanese engineering, and a differing but genuine respect for Chinese engineering. This is not superficial. I have learned both languages and lived in both countries. On price, i believe you as to what you paid, but it is a valid point that a title should be accurate where possible, unless this video was years old. I am also, like you, not a liar. if you go to the official Mercer website, right here, right now, the Mercer Voyager is $469.00 . So how many times you said or didn't say an alternative amount doesn't change the current price which is documented. Here is the link. www.mercerwatch.com/shop-online/?category=Voyager The price is really a key issue. The movement i.e. engine, can be obtained for under 40 bucks retail. a medium sized batch of good quality Chinese casings etc for a unit cost of 15 to 25 each, Photography 2 days, website one afternoon, a fair price would be around the 100 mark. The other 365 is a donation to a couple of young Americans who know nothing about actually building watches, and rely on consumers to appreciate things at face value. For some people, 469 dollars is an impulse buy; a chocolate bar. Its not to me though. I made my money from the ground up. My first teaching job for a university in western China paid a hundred bucks a week. My first Australian job as a high school teacher even before that was in a remote hellish god- forsaken location. If you want to pay very heavily for aesthetics then that is fair enough. If a Porsche had a Trabant engine though would you pay a Porsche price? I think you've argued it would in fact be a Porsche since it has a Porsche body. To end on a positive note...lets consider the difference between a Steinhart Titanium Ocean 500 and a Helgray titanium diver's. Both, do not make movements. Both have off the shelf movements. Both are in a related genre. Both have similar materials and characteristics. but the Steinhart is more carefully and intricately made, and the Helgray is considerably rougher and appears to have the casing etc also made offshore. It seems to me that the Steinhart is the better watch. However the price reflects this. The Helgray is between 125 and 200 whereas the Steinhart is more in the ballpark of about 600 to 900. That seems rational and fair to me; even though if a friend wanted a dive watch for actual diving my advice would be Casio G shock, or seiko skx009, or a Vostok Amphibia. As for the Mercer, Mr Watch On, then the only question is if you yourself love it. You do. Thats great ! Wear it, enjoy it, swim with it, and I agree with one of the key issues...it is a beautiful looking watch.

@@TimeAndCrown That's hell of a discount. But if their constant price without discount is 469$ then your title is misleading.

I don't get what this guy is raving about, its a hotchpotch of some of the best ideas from other swiss watch manufacturers. More importantly the qualit looks suspect to me. Look at the misalignment of the 3 and the 0 on the bezel. I thought this was a trick of the light but if u google these watches u see its the same on all of them. Similarly the 5 on the 15 and 45 on the bezel is too big in comparison to the 1 and 4. In short this looks to me like a cheap Chinese watch with a good but inexpensive seiko movement. Not worth $469 at all.

It is a $50 Chinese watch. Microbrands are a total scam. Most are nothing more than watches picked from a catalogue and rebranded. Minimum order 250 pieces.

Actually, I have a 6.5" wrist. It's quite small - almost a lady size. I was, same as you, of the opinion that any sport watch above 40mm would have looked ridiculous on my wrist. Well..guess what..last week I went to a CitiChain shop here in KL (I think you've them in SG too) and I finally bought a Seiko SSC017 Prospex Solar Powered Dive Watch. A beast of 44mm. I couldn't believe my eyes when I tried and looked at myself at the mirror. It's perfect for me. They only thing I had to do was to cut the rubber strap because is really too long! However, I'll change it with a NATO or ZULU later on. So, at the end, small watches look good on picture but once tried in most cases do not. Unless are slim type dress watches

Giovanni Siano ...generally though...the trend is now moving back down from some of the dish-plate size watches put out by Nixon and others...I mean 46mm...give me a break.......even 42mm just look too big...and not just on the wrist...but the space between the hands and the numerals is a fair expanse..showing just bigger portions of the face..with nothing there... I believe that 40mm is pretty much perfect...and agree with you that any smaller is now too small....this has actually kept me from buying some older Omegas that look amazing on ebay postings....but most at 36mm will just not do it for me...

Some people like huge watches so they will find it even too small but I'm with you 40-41mm max for my 7" wrist for diver's watch.
