My only problem with USUM is the way they screwed up Lusamine's villain motives, trying to make her redeemable just wasn't a good decision while they left her psychological abuse towards Lillie and Gladion the exact same as before

I feel like they changed the character a lot to coincide with the way they were designing her for the anime. They had to make her character more balanced and less insane, otherwise they wouldn’t get the longevity out of her that they had in the show. They had three seasons of this generation, and she was prominent especially in the second two.

Its a different universe with a different version of events. The original sun and moon universe still exists, pokemon is a multiverse so the same characters exist but theyre all sightly different.

Yeah. Ultra is a better game, but base sun and moon has a better story and I liked certain aspects better than their ultra changes, such as the professor being your champion fight, Lillie leaving for kanto and Hala being an elite four member.

The story may have been a step down from vanilla Sun & Moon, but besides that, I've always found the Ultra games to be superior. They're consistently challenging, and they have one of the best postgame episodes ever. Overall, they brought Pokemon's handheld-exclusive era to a very satisfying close, and it's very refreshing seeing more and more people give them the appreciation they deserve.

It would have been cool to see but I’m glad they weren’t on switch because the last haven for all national dex mons would have had unsafe game data. Now no matter what happens you don’t have the risk of all your mons being nuked out of existence because your system had some issue.

Exactly! USUM were great games and are the definitive Alola experience. They aren't perfect, by any means, and they suffer from being released soon after SM. But evaluated on their own merits, they're fantastic games. Great setting, great dex and mons, fantastic music, challenging battles, good post-game, memorable characters...these games are certainly worth a re-play.

I've always said it, Alola games were great. The og SM had better story and character development for Lillie and Lusamine, but USUM is the definitive version and has so much good content it's insane how under the radar it went. The last games where you could get all the current existing pokémon in one single cartridge

As someone who adored Alola since forever, I'm glad apparently people are starting to like the Alola games more and more. While in USUM, Lusamine's character is imo weaker because they tried making her redeemable, otherwise I personally think USUM is better. Wouldn't mind if people started liking/loving those games.

My most wanted Pokemon game has been, for a while, a true definitive single release Alola experience with the USUM dex, trainer teams, trials, post game, minigames, etc. with original SM's story. Remake it with the Let's Go art style and overworld spawns but with the original catching and battling system and we have what might be my Top 1 Pokemon game.

Cutscenes aside, they're very rewarding games to replay. It's one of the few games where I absolutely love every team that I make. The sheer amount of side content from quests, surfing, battle royales and the battle tree are fun to complete.

Ultra Sun is my all-time favorite pokemon game and I've been playing since 98 starting with Red. It has 807 useable pokemon with no cuts like later games, various forms, mega evolutions, and z-moves. The battle tree is my favorite postgame feature in the entire franchise's history, I've actually maxed out my play time because of it. Plus it also has the battle royal and the battle agency, the most amount of battle facilities since the battle frontier in HeartGold and SoulSilver.

I absolutely loved Sun and Moon when they came out, I thought and still think they were phenomenal games, USUM is just Sun and Moon with countless improvements, the Alola games are my second favorite in the entire series, USUM are masterpieces and I'm so happy to see a video praising them and acknowledging how god damn good they are

Despite my gripes with Sun/Moon, I really enjoyed playing it back in the day. The needlessly long dialog and tutorials didn't bother me quite as much as the lack of exploration in Alola and that pervasive feeling of "unfinished" that was present in many locations, but the region had amazing themes and identity, and the trials were a breath of fresh air. But most of all, the colorful cast of characters were the main element that kept me playing and caring about those games. So when USUM kinda took some steps back in that regard, especially with Lillie's journey, it burned me out hard. I should really give these games another chance one day.

I don't like how they retconned Lusamine's motivation in USUM. In the original games, she went mad with grief over the loss of her husband which turned her into a toxic mother who wanted to control her children's every action. Its also implied the Nihilego toxins had some effect on her psyche. She wasn't comically evil like Ghetsis, but rather someone who went down a path of grief and didn't know how to recover. It was a unique and human characterization for a villain, especially by Pokémon standards. But USUM takes that and tries to mix it with it with its new plotlines for her trying to stop Necrozma, and it comes off rather weird. Especially considering what scenes and dialogue they take away and keep from the original games.

I wholeheartedly agree. The whole "nuhuh, WE're the one who will stop Necrozma" thing is just dumb and way inferior to her original motivations. Honestly if Necrozma was made into a post-game quest like the Emerald episode in ORAS, it would have been much better. Or at least make the Ultra Recon Squad working against Lusamine instead of with her, since she's trying to create wormholes that Necrozma can use to cross over to her world.

Pokemon is a multiverse. Nothing was retconned. These are their own characters in their respective universe. Every instance of a game(including each game a player plays)is its own self contained universe.

I always struggle to determine if I prefer SM or USUM. USUM undeniably has better mechanics and features with Ultra Wormholes, Ultra Necrozma, and lots of fun minigames, but I think SM has a better story overall with the Lillie/Lusamine plot having a better climax and me being a Guzma fan, it gives him more to do overall.

I did enjoy USUM gameplay-wise, but to be the story changes, especially to Lusamine's motivations and her family dynamics, are just a crime. I much preferred the original. I think they could have worked in Necrozma better if the Ultra Recon Squad was NOT working with Lusamine instead, and maybe even antagonists to her. It could have worked so much better, with Lusamine creating ultra wormhole that Necrozma would take advantage of to cross over and the Ultra Recon Squad trying to stop it but not having the effectives to take on the Aether Foundation.

The gameplay of the Ultra games is better, but the story in regular Sun and Moon is better. It's a lot more heartbreaking to see Lillie sail off to Kanto for her own proper adventure than Gladeon.

Ppl felt like these were lazy cash grabs when for me it felt like these were the last games where Game Freak truly put their all and everything into the games. You hit all the major points well. I think the mistake was they decided to make them an " enhanced " version rather than being DLC or sequel to the continuation of Alola. Kinda like Black 2 & White 2. They tried to be the next Platinum, Emerald & Crystal version of Gen. 7. But doesn't completely understand on what those enhanced version meant to be.

I started a replay of Ultra Moon two weeks ago. What I highly appreciate about that game is, how much side it content it has, which is not directly related to battling or catching pokemon. The Festival Plaza and Pokemon Resort are neat little additions. Completely optional, but give rewards that are nice to have, but not so good that you have to play these modes. I think they also stepped up the side quests. There are alot of people that want a specific Pokemon Dex entry, the little Vulpix quest, working at the beach or the Ditto Imposter sidequest. I also enjoyed the surf minigame. Not only because you can get nice attacks for not much investment, but I liked how it is a way to travel between the islands. The Space-time-tunnel flight minigame was also fun. The Z-Moves are fine too, since they are neither overpowered or intrusive.

I replayed USUM recently and it still holds up my 2nd favorite region behind Hoenn. It has its problems and did some things worse than s/m. It had more features than people like to mention/realize like new z moves(which i enjoyed even with the funny dances) wormholes, mantine surfing, necrozma lore/fusing with its respective game legendary, and certainly not least Rainbow Rocket which is a nice nostalgia trip. Plus many more small things like side quest my favorite with the ditto cops or collecting the totem stickers, new Pokemon and forms along with some totem changes, and still a killer soundtrack. Great pokemon all around and some fan favorites and most characters are pretty fun alog with some new faces. The cutscenes and the endgame could be approved on and could flow together way better with a few changes, but overall its a really fun game and I perfer the them over s/m and im trying to get one more playthrough before online closes down. Hopefully Gen 7 will get the Gen 5 treatment and gets lots of love years down the road.

I feel like Ultra should have been Pokémon’s first attempt at DLC. As someone who prioritizes the story in their overall impression of a game, while I can definitely appreciate the new gameplay features that were added, I was still irritated by how the phenomenal original main story was butchered while the new story elements felt either half baked or relied heavily on cool factor in relation to the torso it was stitched onto. They did Hau justice though, no denying that, though I have mixed feelings about him taking Kukui’s place as your first title defense match. The Ultra Recon Squad + Necrozma stuff could’ve been a continuation of Looker & Annabel’s post game quest (unlocked by Necrozma’s capture at Ten Carrot Hill), allowing those two to get more screen time and letting the URS & Prism Boi get development that doesn’t involve hijacking the plot. It’d also be the introduction to the Ultra Warp Ride feature and the other UB worlds + legendaries. They have their own Solgaleo/Lunala so no need in making things convoluted by getting Nebby or Lillie involved. Rainbow Rocket could take place after a time skip, explaining why stuff like the photo club and mantine surf are now available (especially since there were already open lots in base SM) and why Lillie is now back; there can be a cutscene where you and the others welcome her back while she’s visiting before the story begins proper at your house as it does in Ultra. Gladion is the damsel in distress here instead of Lusamine since she’s comatose (but she can still be in peril by proxy), despite putting up a good fight he’d be overwhelmed by the hordes of RR Grunts. The RR story plays out the same as usual. I just think if it had worked out this way, it’d build off of and add to an already great base story in the same vein as SV’s DLC currently is. Only thing I can’t really account for is the added Pokémon, since there wouldn’t be any added explorable areas with standard encounters, and I wouldn’t want to lock them begind something as tedious as Poképelago; I know Ultra added a few more nooks and crannies, but they aren’t anything large enough to cram 100 Pokémon into. It’d just feel wierd for the encounter tables of the base game to suddenly change and would seem a bit unfair for the people who already beat the game since they would have missed out on Pokémon they could’ve used during the main story.

This year I played every gen I missed since 2012 (I didn't have a 3DS or Switch, so I missed everything from XY to Sword and Shield) and the games/experience I keep coming back to is Gen 7, specifically Ultra Moon since that's what I played. It's definitely my favorite 3D Pokémon game along with PLA and SV. I have so many great memories from Alola and I was marveled at how polished (and honestly kinda challenging at times) that game was. I was fully immersed in my journey as a trainer with my team, and that's my favorite type of Pokemon experience. You know what else is super underrated? LGPE. There, I said it. Both USUM and LGPE are badly remembered because they were released under the shadow of hype for Switch games, I remember the rampant leaks about Pokemon Stars on the Switch and the disappointment that came with "Sun and Moon. On 3DS. Again!" and "Pokemon on Switch BUT it's Kanto remakes with Pokemon GO mechanics" I'm telling you guys, go play those games again without that context and you'll find two of the best modern Pokémon experiences out there.

I adored SuMo when it first came out - I even bought the official merch of Lillie's bag! That said, I never ended up finishing USUM because it felt too much like replaying a game I just finished. I picked UltraSun back up this year though and love it! The world design of Alola, all the graphics and sound design, how everything down to the GUI matches the aesthetic, on top of the gameplay and story, everything about it's just got so much care put in.

Alola and its games are among my favorites in the series. With its relaxing atmosphere, break with the gym battles-formula, colorful Pokémon and loveable cast of characters, it revitalized my love for the franchise after it slowly died down during Gen 5 and Gen 6 (not saying those are bad games, just that I didn't enjoy them as much as I did what came before and after). So it hurts my soul that so many people seem to disregard, if not even outright hate this game with a passion just because of its long tutorial and dialogue (plus a few other things that can change from person to person).

when it comes to challenge these games are ones where a few fights i actually had a hard time with. They made me actually care about using held items when possible and think about what i should be using. Nanu when i fought him the first time actually kicked my ass as i wasn't taking him seriously. The challenge in these games is just great. The story i think falls flat (when compared to regular sun/moon), don't like what they did with Lilly or Gladion but Hau got much better and the most game was fun specially the rainbow team rocket stuff. These games are overall a treat to play

But my understanding was always that they weren't bad so much as they were kind of redundant in a way. Where it should've just been the one game instead of the original. Literally the only downside is Lillie and Lusamine's character arcs suffering. Everything else, though, was greatly improved upon. Mantine surfing is something that should be a staple for every future region, because it helps casuals like me earn BP without having to partake in Battle Facilities. I'm not a fan of Battle Facility rules. The Black Tower in BW2 was great, though. Because I can use any Pokémon with no level caps.

My main issue with these games is that it’s not a singular “Pokémon Prism” or such. Did they _really_ have to make two versions of this? _Four_ versions of Alola? I feel some changes should have been made to make this the ULTIMATE 3DS Pokémon game, keep the story the same from the original SM while making the Necrozma stuff better ingrained with the story as well, even if that seems hard to do.

To say that this game is underrated is an understatement, I LOVE USUM it was 1 of my favorite Pokemon games next to Platinum but I highly love this game for what's it worth. For starters the amount of Pokemon that is feature in this region is phenomnial including the birth of regional variants by taking a old Pokemon from a previous region of Kanto and reimagine them to fit with this region of Alola. I never once care for Sandslash until I saw it's regional variant design and I immediately fell in love with it. Not only that but the people and the region itself, I know people tend to complain and say that the dialouge is too tidious but I frankly don't mind it that much, especially when they tend to have something interesting to say and give the characters somewhat of a personality despite not having voice actors. Also as well doing the side missions and other like Mantine surfing & taking photo pictures with ones Pokemon which I did for my team and save. As for the story I would agree it's not all that perfect but I stll do quite find it appealing despite Lusamine's motives. And even so much so when rewatching the events of this in anime of Pokemo Evolution where it is kinda beat for beat with the game, I really appreciate that. And lastly the island vibes of Alola just reminds me of my home in the Caribbean which makes me feel right at home. Truly USUM was amazing and is my personal favorite Pokemon game ever.

I would put generation 7 in general in the top half of Pokémon generations, in spite of its flaws. I appreciate how it tried to change up the formula, and I genuinely had a blast playing all of them. The one thing I didn’t like about USUM was exactly what you brought up about the changes to the story. I thought it was a significant downgrade from SuMo, which I thought had one of the best stories in a Pokémon game. But other than that I appreciate the enhancements and challenges added to the Ultra games.

Great video bro. The ultra games were sooo good, I'm currently playing ultra moon. My main problems is the fact that we can't re-battle trainers, trial captains, kahunas in the post game. To level up well enough, we have to be trapped in the elite four or just find everyone who we didn't battle yet in the region, and there's a daily battle in gamefreaks headquarters building. Not enough post-game exp options. A more personal issue is some of the music. I really don't like the remix version of the wild and trainer battle themes. The original sun/moon wild and trainer battle themes are significantly better than ultra.

I think that what hurt these games the most was not only releasing too close to the originals, but the fact they had the Switch ready for them and still choose to put them on the 3DS. That system was already struggling with Sun and Moon and it's even more evident with Ultra. If the games had been consolidated into one (like the rumoured Stars) and had it released on the Switch instead, I think they would've been recieved with more enthusiasm by the community.

I do love Pokemon Sun/Moon Nintendo 3DS games and upgrade version of Pokemon Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon Nintendo 3DS because despite different version of the storylines I do like the theme region inspiration from Hawaii and the feature like Festival Plaza, Poké Pelago, Poké Finder, Alola Photo Club and Trainer Customisation. Popplio is my favourite Alola starter Pokemon of all as it evolved all the way into Primarina that's why I choose it as my starter Pokemon in my Pokemon Sun/Moon games and Pokemon Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon Nintendo 3DS because Primarina is very beautiful as it's appearence look more female rather a male which is perfect for a female trainer like me.

2023 and I still do some of my shiny hunting in them. Still not too fond of the hand holding in the story mode, but that's probably because I bought multiple copies of each version just to shiny hunt legendaries and the hand holding slows things down.

Mantine surf is also such an improvement. It's an adventure you're supposed to be journeying, being fast traveled to the next island sucked. I get why they did it (too much water 7.8/10 -IGN) and I think mantine surf was a nice way to meet in the middle. You still get to travel between the islands, but it's a mini game so it's not a tedious water route like ruby and sapphire had.

The ultra games are by far my favorite games in the franchise, it’s not even close. I have so many fond memories from gen 7 and especially these games. I love how they’re actually somewhat challenging unlike sword/ shield or scarlet/violet, plus the boss trainers and totem Pokémon being fully ev trained really threw me off in my first run of ultra moon. And omg ultra necrozma was the sickest fight I’ve experienced in a very long time, 10/10 games, and I wish they get brought to the switch at some point

I've played um and sun only once but they're already my favourite games ever! It felt like the cutscenes are integral to the story and I don't mind how long they are, also double battles improved in the alola games as there's not a lot of lag compared to gen 6, and story wise, I wish I could have fought lusamine and her beasts, but I think that the last fairy trial replaced those battles and OF COURSE THESE ARE THE HARDEST GAMES EVER!N. Especially with level caps, these games balanced quality of life features and also difficulty, you just couldn't pick up a Pokemon with super effective moves and win immediately, you needed a strategy always! That's why I think that there's so many different types of Pokemon on each island, to help you prepare

I wasn't able to finish USUM when they first came out, specifically for the reasons you named (Beginning being too slow and forcing tutorials too soon after playing through SM). I've tried replaying once before, but it was too soon to some other pokemon game releasing so I ended up dropping it in leiu of the new game at the time. I just recently started playing through Ultra Moon again, and I've honestly been having a blast. There definitely are too many forced tutorials and the amount of features they throw at you early game can feel a bit overwhelming, but I'm really enjoying the overall feel of the game. The tropical atmosphere mixed with the laid back, fun loving attitude carried by most characters creates a welcoming setting, and there are so many good pokemon available I can't decide on a team. I like how finding and catching pokemon feels more complex with features like day/night cycle, SOS battles, and specific patches of grass affecting which pokemon you can find. I like the number of side quests. It feels like every time I go back to an area there's something new to do there, and I love that. It makes the world feel more immersive. To anyone considering replaying or playing these games for the first time, as long as you enjoy/can handle a good amount of dialogue, I recommend giving it a shot.

I've been playing since gen 3. Sapphire was my first game, but despite that, Gen 7 became my favourite generation as a whole. Great characters, great story, phenomenal region design, and some surprisingly dark and gritty story beats if you look a little beneath the surface. The dialogue isn't even a problem if you actually enjoy the story in a game (looking at you, people who spam through and don't read anything) And I'm a die-hard Guzma fan. He's the best, deepest and most well-written character to ever come from the Pokémon franchise.

Pokemon X and Pokemon Y are my very first Nintendo 3Ds games back in 2014 that I've played which got me starterd to liked the Pokemon games. My favourite Kalos Starter Pokemon is Fennekin because to me as it evolved into Braxien and then to Delphox as it looks more feminine as a female rather than a male. Delphox is very beautiful 💖and remind me of a combination of a fox, Japanese girl in Kimono and a witch with a sticking making magic. That's why I picked Fennekin as my starter Pokemon in both Pokemon X and Pokemon Y Nintendo games because it's suitable for a female trainer like me👍.

This video makes some great points. However, I still found all of the Alola games to be a chore to play. There are obviously games I like more than others, but Alola was the first region where I felt like I was forcing myself to play through the games. I used to replay games multiple times when they first came out. SM/USUM we’re the first time I didn’t do that. They tried to change up the formula for once so I give them that, but it just didn’t do it for me. Also, Maybe HGSS? Those are the ones I see mentioned the most when it comes to best games and I’m guilty of that too 😂

I loved these games so much. Ultra Moon was the first game I obtained a shiny charm in. Also it was the first time I shiny hunted. I found a shiny Yveltal in like 208 resets. I named it Bacon Bird (because of course).

You really hit the nail on the head with how I've come around to USUM over the years. During my first playthrough of Ultra Sun, I found myself being incredibly unmotivated, because it felt way too similar to my prior playthrough of Moon, and I could never shake the feeling that I was being ripped off by Game Freak (and I still think that, if they wanted to market these with the whole "alternate universe" thing, they should have made far more changes to the story, progression, and the pool of available Pokémon to warrant revisiting Alola so soon). I believe I finished Moon in less than a month, but when it came to my Ultra Sun playthrough, I believe it took me over a year before I finished it. I do feel quite a bit of resentment towards those games to this day. However, looking back on it... I do think that the Ultra games are still the objectively better version of Alola overall (even if some things, like the story writing, are a little bit worse) due to the sheer amount of content they add, and I think if I had not bought and played through Moon beforehand, I would have absolutely loved these games. I honestly think that Generation 7 is where Pokémon peaked, as it was the last generation where the developers were given adequate time to develop a complete, functional, and engaging game - everything after USUM felt half-baked. If I had to choose only one game in the Pokémon series that I would be allowed to play for the rest of my life... yeah, I would pick USUM with zero hesitation. They're objectively fantastic!

When the cut scene with Necrozma taking over Solgeleo is still my favorite cut scene it’s so damn intense because I love nebby. I own the ogs I’ve thought about playing because I heard the story is much better

USUM should have been the first steps into a Alola, maybe with a Pokémon Eclipse version to follow. We still didn’t get the golf course opened up and the skip cutscene option Sword and Shield introduced would have been most welcome here since the cutscene length is off putting for replaying. But as the mainline farewell to the 3DS it’s reasonably solid and suffered from bad timing more than anything, trying to rush a new generation for the twentieth anniversary over quality control or giving Kalos another desperately needed game.

I really enjoyed these games when they first came out. I already loved Alola as a region and this game expanding on most of the characters, the trials, and the region (I was genuinely surprised when they made Mount Lanakila into an actual Victory Road) really made me appreciate these games and what it did for Alola. It still has its issues, but after how disappointing I found most of the Switch era games to be, it just led to me appreciating the amount of content and care put into these games even more.

As someone that played literally just Gen 4 games as a kid, then nothing for years and then SM, i welcomed USUM more favorably than most people, and completing them last year for the first time reminded me why i love the alolan region so much, if anything i might be the only person that would like a Legends game around the Alola islands, simply because that style of game would weirdly enough fuse perfectly with how Alola was made and meant to be viewed Also Alola is what made me subscribe to you since i did so after dying of laughter after a segment of one of your older videos where you talked with some funny accent about how SM gave you a lot of useless stuff and functionality 😂 "Hey there kid want a poké finder that you'll never use ? Alola Photo Club how about that ? Nebby get in ma dang old bag !
