Apple has finally made a large screen MacBook Air. This is great for people who like big screens, so not Jonathan. Unless, it's so good it wins him over.

I've found it's less about the size of the laptop and more about the weight. The 15" Air seems to be well within that threshold where you're "carrying" it, instead of "lugging" it. Also, not having to pinch your legs together so much when it's on your lap can make things way more comfortable.
@awwastor
@awwastor 9 ай бұрын
I have the exact opposite opinion tbh. Thickness is the least important for portability, yes it doesn't look great, but realistically that's not the dimension you're limited in, weight is a lot more important but still pretty easy to ignore up to a point (up to 2.5kg is 100% fine, over that gets tougher but is usually tolerable), while the width and height make it hard to fit in many places and, at least for me, harder to use as I can't even balance it very well on my legs.
@IanZamojc
@IanZamojc 9 ай бұрын
@@awwastor Weight is the thing I notice most. an extra 1 or 2 pounds may not sound like much, but when it's digging into your shoulder in a laptop satchel, you notice. Similarly, it being lighter means it's easy to move around regardless of size. If you can effortlessly pick it up by the corner, who cares what the width is.

@@IanZamojc If by weighing less it makes you more like to buy it, you are complaining about weight. My point is valid, if it were to weigh a bit more it would put you off from buying it. It’s not my fault that you don’t understand the comment.

Its kinda neat how even with the same access to that hardware and tech (and probably even people) that the main LTT channel has, the MA channel can shoot these videos and have their own completely different feel and editing style. Its a great subtle touch that actual take quite a bit of skill to pull off.

I dunno, I think they are covering all the bases from a marketing angle. LTT channel tends to rubbish Macs at every chance and Mac Address is simply there for this of us who use Macs - despite the rantings of the main channel. I'm not anti-PC - I've used both OS and hardware platforms since the days of Windows 98 and the Mac Clones.

Mac Adress is awesome. As someone who switched away from an iPhone because of how restrictive Apple chooses to be (fdroid/third party store, launcher), these Videos are still great. They objectively talk about the products, while marking their opinion clearly. Most Apple-focused channels I found always shyed away from critiquing them, and only talk about the good things. I never manage to finish such videos. But MA finds a great balance while having great production quality. My device of choice will still run open source Android (GrapheneOS) and Linux, but it's good to know what else is out there.

For someone who does some light video editing, but a fair amount of pretty intense coding, the 15" MacBook Air has been incredible! 24GB of memory is only hard to justify because of the absurd margins Apple has on every tiny upgrade. I have not built a PC with less than 32GB memory in probably 8 years now, and the massive difference it makes in how much stuff you can have open and running smoothly is well worth the extra 100-200 bucks vs 16GB. I have a Mac Mini with only 16GB, and it's torture at times. My main issue with this laptop is that the top of the screen (to the left and right of the notch) is unusable space, the only thing it can show is the macos top bar, and in full screen its just becomes black and unused for content. I'm angling to upgrade from my 13" MBP from 2014 and will likely get the 14" MBP when I do. The Air is certainly nice, but as a developer I prefer access to at least 32GB of RAM (maybe with M3 on the Air), but also the Pro CPU is better for compiling, the display being 120Hz makes everything feel responsive, and the inclusion of an HDMI port to connect to most presentation hardware setups means one less dongle to carry around. Like you I very much prefer smaller laptops, though, so the 14" is the sweet spot for that. Sadly lots of employers think oh, you code all day and probably want a bigger screen, so my current employer gave me a massive 17" XPS and the client I was assigned to have me a 15" Lenovo, and I'm all cooooool, I hook this up to a single external display anyway. Fortunately both support USB-C for charging and video so I can use a single cable, but on the (admittedly rare) occasion I have to tote either around it's not fun, especially the 17" behemoth.

When I need a bigger screen (if I do) I simply use the desktop computers which are Apple too and are huge. I would, maybe, consider 14" but that's my very limit. I am too a small laptop person :-)

Too bad I love my 16inch m2 macbook pro, I love curling its mass but it's still so light compared to previous windows laptops. The new redesigned body is great because the touch bar is useless I wouldn't recommend it to everyone because the vast majority of people aren't pro's and they go under utilized

Nonetheless it doesn’t seem to be selling that well. My issue with it is the lack of I/O and extra display limitations of the SoC. But I’m pretty sure the next iteration will have the same options as the Mac Mini, so a tier higher SoC option.

I'm with you on small laptops. My philosophy has always been that everything should be the best version of itself. For me, that means I have always loved the smallest, laptoppiest laptop to ever top a lap. When I traded in my 11" Intel-based MacBook Air for a 13" M1 Air, I already felt I was going too big. But I'm noticing that my eyes aren't quite as young as they used to be, so I sometimes struggle to read the fuzzy squiggles on my 13" screen. I'm thinking it's at least time to check out a larger screen. Like you, though, I'm pretty skeptical of the large size. So we'll see.

I’ve owned both 16” amd 13” Mac Pro laptops over the years, and when the M1 Max MacBook was announced, I went back to the smaller size. I learned that I prefer to backpack the smaller laptop, and the Pro models can drive one or more Apple Studio Displays or other photographer/video editor appropriate displays. That’s all I need at home or on the road.

I've been using a 13" 2020 M1 MacBook Air that my job gave me for about a week now. It's my first time really using MacOS, and it feels like plenty of laptop. It's very snappy, the battery life is great, and it never feels like it falls short for any work tasks. Sure, it can't really game well, but I don't really like doing a whole lot of that on a laptop anyways. Only thing I've really had to get used to is the control/command button change and lack of numpad, but the keyboard is plenty big and so easy to type on. Display is great too. Coming from a 15.6" Windows 10 laptop that I wasn't too excited about using through college, I think 13" might be enough in this case.

The 15'' Air is everything I'd want out of a laptop, but pricing in Scandinavia has made it basically a nonstarter, for me at least. After taxes and the always unfair price conversion, the Air 15 base model *starts* at 1800 US. Anything above that and we're talking over 2000 dollars for even the smallest spec bump. Once you hit that kind of cost, you might as well buy a secondhand 14 Pro Max or the like.

Indeed, but it’s still very thin and light, and it’s still a bit cheaper (especially in Europe, where the pricing is completely bonkers right now). I bought a fully kitted out one, because I’m mostly writing and giving classes over the next year, but may want to push the machine a little bit more down the road and want it to last (but, as I have a Studio and decent, 27’’ 4K screens at home, not having a Pro model isn’t that big of an issue).

Apple really does have some weird base model offerings but I guess it’s all psychology. I can’t see buying anything other than a 14” pro to be honest. My biggest gripe with them isn’t base price but how much they charge for upgrades. I think the machines are worth the money but not when it comes it increasing your specs.

As a photographer, I regularly push against and beyond the 32GB of ram in my 16” M1 Max (Capture One can now use about 28GB on its own), and can drive nearly all cores sustained loads for hours on end. I tried editing as I normally do on my wife’s 13” M2 Air and it saturated and throttled down shockingly quickly. I can’t imagine the 15” would make for a very fun work day.

I've always gone with the largest laptop Apple makes (well, except my first MacBook Pro in 2007, where I had to settle for a 15" because the 17" at $2800 was just too dang expensive for high-school-me). For me, laptops mainly sit in one place, with the portability just being a bonus for when I want to roam, so getting the largest screen just made sense. But I've never needed the power offered by those larger machines, so it was a LOT of monetary waste to step up. The 15" Air solves that dilemma nicely... seemingly. With the release of the lower-end 14" M3 MacBook Pro, which for only $100 more than the 15" Air actually offers a higher resolution display, *that* could actually be the best way to go, if you're willing to scale the display. I'll need to try them side-by-side in the store, but on paper, it seems to really cannibalize the Air. Either way, when Apple releases the 15" M3 Air, they really ought to drop the price another $100 or so to stay competitive.

For programmers who code a lot that extra screen real estate plays a huge role in ease of visibility. You don't have to zoom in that much or change the resolution drastically like you do in 13inch mba. I think this should be the go to choice for students who type and code a lot and don't want the secondary monitor.

I'm a huge tech guy. In both senses. I love large monitors, large phones, large tablets, and, yes, large laptops. I used a 17" Dell Inspiron N7110 from 2010 until the motherboard died in 2016... at which time I got an 17" HP Envy. For my music tech minor, I got a 2015 15" MBP to use with Logic, Garage Band, and other music software. It made me realize that 15" is a much better size than 17 inches. If I could afford it, I'd definitely spring for the upgraded 15" Air.

There’s a big problem not mentioned in the video for someone who can benefit from multiple screen productivity workloads: the air can only support up to one external display. Sure this isn’t a problem if all you’ll ever need is 2 total screens, but maybe you already have two monitors, or you want to keep your desk setup clean with two similar monitors. The pro can support two, the air only one. If the air could support two it would be an automatic by for me

At 2:15 you talk about the 15” Air better filling the big laptop pockets of “most bags.” I ended up preferring the 14” MacBook Pro because it goes in the other direction. The 14” MBP is smaller by just enough that it still fits easily into my slim, less bulky bag sized for my iPad and old 13” MBP. And the 14” MBP screen actually has more pixels than the 15” Air, so there is more actual room to spread out work. For 15 years I carried those 15” laptops. Thanks to the 14” MBP, my new rule is, don’t choose a laptop that will make me go back to hauling a bulkier full size backpack. Even though the 15” Air is not for me, I still think it’s great that it is now an option for those who do need something bigger than the 13” Air without having to pay a huge premium to get to the 16” Pro, as you said.
