I would have to agree. It's not exactly a slice of life, because it's rick and morty and there's absurd stuff everywhere, but its something along that line. But it's the Joe Walsh that makes it for me. That song sets up the whole episode to be great. There's the small town perception of people in the big city being cogs in a wheel and nothing mattering. And that's Rick's entire philosophy, nihilism on the biggest possible scale. It's the best possible choice for the opener.

Credit as well to Justin Roiland for the voice acting he did in this episode. He has to populate a whole world with only two voice types to work from, multiple scenes where the same voice has to bounce off another character with someone with the exact same voice. He succeeds in making this feel like a world of many people even when he’s working off two base voices and nearly all new characters to boot.

I lived in my college’s dorms when this came out. I had a big TV so everyone would come and watch different shows in there. I remember finishing the episode dumbfounded that it only ran for 22 minutes. It really felt like we were watching for over an hour and I mean that in the best possible way. I’ve watched a lot of R&M with friends but collectively have never had an experience like that

Exactly what I felt the first time I saw it, the scope of the episode is so epic, the world is so immersive and the storylines are so powerful that when it’s over it feels like you’ve just watched a whole movie. It still amazes me how they could pull that off in 22 minutes.

Just had a theory: What if C137 isn’t actually the smartest rick ever and is only the “rickest rick” because he’s the one who created THIS version of the central finite curve? What if, in other closed off regions of space time there’s other dimensions’ ricks who created their own CFC and they’re the rickest rick in that one? Itd be hilarious if Evil morty went through all that to escape C-137 and ended up trapped again in an even smarter ricks CFC. Let me know how yall feel about this, just something i thought of during this video

Seems like a pretty bad idea. It'd totally undercut the gravity of the Evil Morty story arc and would contradict what's already been established. It also leads to the problem of infinite regression, where now everything starts to feel meaningless because Rick C-137 isn't the Rickest Rick after all and even destroying the CFC was ultimately of no consequence because whoops they're right back where they started, stuck in a multiverse where every reality is once again where Rick is the smartest being in their universe. It's like the one cool trick to completely undermine the season finale and prevent the show from trying something new as it's clearly about to do in season 6. A nihilistic chuckle isn't worth undoing that all.

Correction on the source of inspiration. They pulled inspiration from the Council of Kangs, a much older concept in Marvel comics. But the Council of Kangs also included a Citadel, much like the Citadel of Ricks.
@AllFlimmits

I'd argue that's it's probably more along the lines of the council of reeds because Reed Richards is one of if not the smartest man in the universe. I get your argument because Kang is more associated with the multiverse, but rick is more of an analog to Reed Richards than Kang simply because he's a scientist and one of if not the best.

My personal opinion is that the fans ruined the show. The writers constantly say they just like doing episodic adventures and not really serialized but i guess started with the awesome episode of evil morty the fan base kept constantly pressuring them to answer questions and complete stories they never technically wanted to do. They often broke the fourth wall to comment about that but it fell on death ears and after the last season finale and how they did it the finale felt more like a "there we finished things so let us get back to doing what we actually enjoy doing which is having random unconnected adventures between an old man and his grandson"
@FromAMumblingCartoonist

It doesn’t really matter how the fans act. The creators should have to make the show that they wanna make without having to piss on the show’s own fandom. They weren’t thinking the fans in seasons 1 & 2, and it was great.
@magic75450

To be fair, the best episodes in season 5 are the last 3 episodes, which happen to have the most "canon" or overarching story-arc. That's not to say the episodic episodes are better or worse, just that I think they kinda ran out of ideas at this point. Season 4 actually had many great episodic episodes. It's not to say one form is better than the other, we need both to co-exist. Seasons 1 and 2 balanced episodic and canon.
@ernestoagapitogarcesconyad1710
@ernestoagapitogarcesconyad1710 2 жыл бұрын
I agree that the episodic format works (or, worked) really well but IIRC in the 5th a lot of the less connected episodes were received extremely poorly in comparison to the canon episodes that actually explored the worldbuilding and Rick's backstory. They've got 5 more seasons to make and I kind of see them running out of single-episode ideas before the show ends. I kind of hope that the s5 finale leads to some sort of shift in the status quo fundamental enough to change the show significantly s5 onwards, I'm sure a shift like that would piss some people off but it'd keep things comparatively a lot more fresh rather than trying to do the same thing for 5 more seasons. That's just my opinion though 🤷
@magic75450
@magic75450 2 жыл бұрын
@@ernestoagapitogarcesconyad1710 The perfect shift could've and should've been season 4's finale- the introduction of space Beth. She is the perfect foil for both Rick and normal Beth. She'd change the state of the show while still allowing most of it to continue as usual. She didn't even have to be in every episode. She lives in space, after all, so just have her in 2-3 episodes per season. That's the way to keep a show relevant and fresh- slowly add recurring characters that allow for new stories and opportunities.
@ernestoagapitogarcesconyad1710
@ernestoagapitogarcesconyad1710 2 жыл бұрын
@@magic75450 ooo, that would've been good. I totally agree that space beth was wasted in s5. I should clarify that I don't want s6 onwards to be completely serialized, but based on how s5 ended I'm hoping that the destruction of the central finite curve allows for new threats/obstacles to pop up and challenge our characters in new ways, possibly allowing for the introduction of new characters like you suggested while allowing the episodic format to remain. I'm just thinking back to Community (which is actually how I got into Rick & Morty in the first place) - it also experienced a big dip in quality halfway through its run and while I think seasons 5 & 6 are good, they couldn't quite capture the magic of the first 3 seasons, & s6 is actually my favorite of the latter 3 because it leans into the differences in the show (3 of the 7 original main characters leaving, different platform, tone shifts, new characters) & makes for a really fun season of TV despite being different from what the show originally was. however, some people really dislike season 6 because of those differences, so I get how a shift like the one I'm suggesting could go over badly.

This is probably my favorite episode in the entire series along with Rickshank Redemption and Rick Potion #9. We need more story episodes in this series. But it seems to have a hard time finding a balance between story and episodic. It often leans too much towards comedy and episodic which ends up abandoning continuity and more serious plotlines.

thats exactly what i love from the show tho, I like that I can just lay back and enjoy good jokes and existential dread the episodes leave you with. i often find these episodes a bit too "harsh" to just go onto the next one and see that a huge thing that happened didn't impact things at all

whilst I personally thought of the same episode upon seeing the title, the video is prolly needed to be longer to do full justice to the brilliance of the episode it doesn't credit the weight of the episode in the subsequent season building on Evil Morty. the guy says there are 4 plotlines but imo there's just 1, the rest are just support cast to the build-up in the end, but they' re each incredibly deep in light of the world we live in - disillusioned and depressed students, a justice system that leaves those who care about it empty, the mundanity of capitalism for the avg office-goer. nor does he talk about the absolutely mindfuck ending, and what are imo among the best lines said on the show: " This seems like a good time for a drink and a cold calculated speech with sinister overtones, a speech about politics, about order, brotherhood, power. But speeches are for campaigning. Now is the time for action."

The biggest but from this video of this episode is the mention of the 45 seconds of dialogue-free exposition towards the beginning of the episode. Rick and Morty is AMAZING at delivering information without dialogue. The over-the-top detail in the background is the most obvious version of this, but this 45 seconds in Tales from the Citadel as well as the around TWO whole minutes of talkless scenes from Rattlestar Ricklactica are brilliant moments of storytelling that don't rely on the most basic manner of delivery.

I already thought this is the best episode of any animated sitcom ever, this just gave me more reasons to think that.

Anyone notices that Tales of the Citadel has a lot of resemblance to the last airbender The Tales of Ba Sing Se? Which arguably is the best Avatar episode? Not in terms of what happens in the story, more in the structure. Thoughts?

This is a great episode, it sets up foreshadowing of a lager overall plot line, however, Pickle Rick is by far my favorite episode. Rick's ability to overcome any obstacle he encounters, while being a pickle, is freakin hilarious. "I'M PICKLE RIIICK!!!" Best line ever 😅😅🤣
