But I still kind of feel like he is putting whatever he and Kevin have going on on Kate. People can’t read minds. That’s something I had to learn as an adult. I COMPLETELY understand what Randall is talking about. I have a LOT of white friends here in Brazil. Some of them, years and years of friendship. I did my final paper at university on racial issues and been talking about it on my blog since 2015 and in my Instagram profile since january, last year. Two weeks BEFORE George Floyd we had in Brazil a 14 year old kid INSIDE his house and a 22y old guy WORKING on the street both murdered by the police. A week after George Floyd we had two more episodes that made through the news. But a lot of my white friends only paid attention in what I was saying AFTER George Floyd. People started to invite me to talk in places. I mean... why just now? What changed? It's the hashtags? The viralization? I think it's a good thing that a lot of white people started paying attention and listen. The thing is, when things like this happen, us black people... WE FEEL it. And beyond feeling it, we have to talk about it cuz people start to send me the videos, the news and ask me about it and all I wanna do is cry at my room. It IS exhausting. So... I love this friends of mine, but my wish is to say to them what Randall told Kate. This scene got me emotional because it hits home.

In a family dynamic, when there’s so much love , most don’t want to talk about the difficult topics.. for example, the scene where Kate confronts her mom at the bar, where Kate just sang, but didn’t want her mom around, to see her sing.. she always felt inadequate in front of her mom, because her mom, in the process of making Kate feel her best.. forgot to ask her, how Kate really feels! it’s not like, it doesn’t cross their mind, it’s just, they become protective & want the other person on the edge, to be loved so much, they just believe love heals everything..! In this situation, you can’t really blame anyone..! Some just don’t know what to say & if it can be even said & how it’ll be taken & the consequences of it.. they may not want to lose a great friend they had all these years..

This scene is more than Randall is right or Kate is right. It's how both of them are human. Both Kate and Randall don't "look the part" to the boomers or the oppressive people. Kate is struggling and it is seen of and talked of. Randall's struggle is far more complex yet not spoken of. Randall shouldn't have the need to speak. It is obvious but often not noted. It is often difficult to realize someone in the family is struggling, and Kate didn't realize it in 40 years. This scene is a symbol, that we, as a society, have failed to recognize the sufferings of the minorities, especially black people. Randal just did his best to voice his thoughts. Kate tried her best to help. But, both lack more skills and time. This scene is a reflection of a lot of real-life relationships, where one is a minority and the other is not, and how even though there is a lot of love but they don't know how to express and cope with what they are feeling.

He isn’t my least favorite, but I felt like this sene shouldn’t have been for him and Kate. Randell lived a good life with his parents and siblings. He has been successful in his school and work because he had support. Rebecca did a lot as a mother to make sure Randell felt loved, connected with other black people, and even kicked her own mother out when her mother was showing favoritism and racism. So with all that support and success because he lived is loving home (not a white home, any household can have a loving and supportive home; like Rebecca & Jack and Randell & Beth both provided for there families). if any of this “needed” to be addressed in this tv show, I’m surprised they didn’t use Deja. She grew up rough for most of her life (and may have seen a lot of things) and is still young enough to not understand how the world works. If she blamed the entire white race and police officers for her and other black people’s problems, that would make more sense, but for how successful and loved Randell is, it felt off.

But to not address this issue even once in 40 years is insane! Randall had a constant struggle with his identity, with wanting to know his biological family, he's dealt with anxiety for years, and recently had to watch the biological father he just found die. None of these characters have had a particularly easy go of it. But there's a pattern, which is that Kate and Kevin support each other and Randall offers support where he can, especially to Rebecca. Since Jack, who you see supporting Randall in the flashbacks (even though even he got things wrong), I don't know that Randall has had that kind of support from the Pearsons. Which is why it makes sense that he just wants to be with Beth and his kids in the family that does support him.

@@KS-di4df randall is mostly selfish and takes his wife for granted. He has been coddled most of his life by jack and rebecca

@@NYD666 ummm... I’m sorry that happened to you, but how does that make the fact that Randall’s siblings never bothered trying to understand his experiences as a black man okay? Like, that’s his family, and it’s the responsibility of family to support you through things like that... and just because it doesn’t always work out that way, doesn’t make it okay.

@@KS-di4df they each have their own issues. Why does randall barely ever try to see life from their side? Hes so up his own hole. It's hard to care. Kevin was practically NEGLECTED; so hes addicted to seeking attention and approval from others. Kate is so absorbed in herself about her weight that she gets insecure and angry around thin people. It's hard to look at other people's problems when you have your own, and you often dont try to put yourself in other people's shoes when they have problems you dont relate to. Didnt randall hang out with black people before beth?

No no, Randall is right. Yeah Kate has had issues too but this is Randall’s identity and all his struggles from his whole entire life just because of his skin color
