The Berlin FIDE Grand Prix is the 16-player first of three legs of the 24-player 2022 FIDE Grand Prix that qualifies two players to the Candidates Tournament. Each player competes in two of the three tournaments, with the 16 players divided into four groups who play a double round-robin. The group winners advance to a knockout. Tiebreaks at any stage are played on the following day. Players can earn a maximum of 13 points for winning a leg.
Players receive 90 minutes for 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes to the end of the game, plus a 30-second increment starting from move one. In case of a tie a 15+10 two-game match is played. If still tied, a 3+2 two-game match follows and then, if needed, an Armageddon game, where White has 5 minutes to Black's 4, but a draw counts as a win for Black. If more than two players are tied a round-robin tiebreak is played. Official website: worldchess.com

Brilliant positional play from Levon, his games are quite the joy to watch, also Vincent is a beast of a player for his age and an excellent tactician, he lures his opponents into positions where it's hard to find a move and proceeds to destroy 'em. How the tables have turned same thing happened to him this match. Well fought Keymer!

When it comes to opening principal the only way something new is created is to change it. This is what the old masters did and created the theory that is still being used today. If opening isn't chess becomes static and will be stuck on a merry-go-round so to speak because you will see the same thing over and over again

As a Dubov fan, this tournament, like Wijk aan Zee is a tough watch. With that being said, I think you can just see how Levon really is just a level above Vidit and Dubov. I love the latter two, but it feels like Levon is absolutely killing the group. Feel like in this form, it would be interesting to see him battle with Anish who finished quite strong in WAZ. I personally do not really see any other player competing for the candidates spot other than him. Maybe Rapport, Sasha or So. But for this group, it seems like Levon is just too strong.
@slamar8712
@slamar8712 2 жыл бұрын
It appears Aronian is in form but still a lot of chess to be played. He is the favorite to win the 1st leg ....but Nakamura and So are right there. Then in the remaining 2 legs you still have Giri, Mamedyarov and MVL. Its a shame Ding Liren is not playing. Lots of good players but only 2 spots remain. I m curious to see what MVL does. Giri and Mamedyarov did well at Tata Steel tournament, so did Rapport.

I was disappointed in Dubov's game against Vidit. Matching his moves for the first few moves didn't seem like a good idea, and it wasn't.
@nyashamilanhuits458
@nyashamilanhuits458 2 жыл бұрын
@@slamar8712 I see your point and I agree. However, from what I have seen so far, it looks like Aronian is just crushing these 2700+ers, which is very much needed to claim the win in the grand prix. With that being said, it will be interesting to see how MVL, Shakh and Giri will perform. But for the others, I feel like Aronian has been the only truly convincing competitor so far (meaning that he has been more dominant than others)

@@jx14aby +1, I feel you. Think that the backclash from the whole Russia-thing might get to him more than he would like to admit. For someone who has had so much succes against even Carlsen playing very obscure lines and taking risks (although being in Rapid), it is a shame to see him play a safe game in the London with white against arguably the man to beat in the group (Aronian). Hope he has an outstanding second half, but it feels like it's going to be a big ask.

I'm confused. Around 5:30, when the rooks and queens are traded off, why doesn't white use the bishop for a capture instead?
@ArielongasOnTwitch
@ArielongasOnTwitch 2 жыл бұрын
Just much better to capture with the queen, forces a queen trade and allows levon to get a rook on the 7th rank like it happened in the game... that very sequence tied down keymer's movements in the end. Capturing with the bishop attacks the queen, but after the queen moves nothing happens, and now that bishop is pinned cause the rook attacks it and your queen is behind it...
