Let’s talk about all things soup. The broke man’s soup can be made and manipulated to fit anyone’s needs. Use whatever you vegetables and protein you have on hand, spice it up, and toss it into a pot with good broth- it’s hard to go wrong and mess up.

I have just subscribed. I am almost 70 and was married in the 1970's to a very very active man. Our grocery budget was $20.00/week. I waited tables and he was doing heavy labor 9 hours a day and we're both still going to school. First gas crunch then and major inflation. I learned to bake bread, forage ( which didn't work out so well... In my experience, there is a taste reason for for foraged food not being commercially grown). I basically can squeeze a penny till Lincoln screams. I have never successfully been able to make a sourdough starter. I have always used cheesecloth rather than a coffee filter. I just had a Eureka moment from this episode. Thank you so much! I am going to try this with fermenting anything else I can think of as well. (If there are weird, nonsensical words in this comment, alI I can say is that apprently my spell check knows what I want to say more than I do.

Most folks don't realize how difficult the late 70s and early 80s were. They seem to think these are the most difficult times in history. The rationing of gas, the lines based on odd, even days ... the insanely high home interest rates (peaked at almost 19%) in '82)1. And even with all that, the 70s and 80s weren't even the "truly hard times." When I hear young couples saying today is the hardest time ever, I just laugh. Struggling when you're just getting started is the norm! I applaud the young folks who just step up, live frugally, and do what needs to be done.

Before becoming disabled, back when I was married, I came down with bronchitis (flu, something similar) not long after we were married, so... small apartment, resting on the couch, napping, watching tv, and I got to see first-hand ALL that being a housewife entailed. It's sooooooooooo NOT "Peggy Bundle"- home- on- the-couch- eating- bonbons- all- day kind of lazy and boring. I was exhausted after a day of watching it! I told her I was gonna go back to the office where I could relax! LOL!

I make soup several times a month using dried beans. Very economical and healthy 😁 I always soak my beans overnight, and remove a cup or two of the soup when it’s done cooking and pulse in a blender before returning it to the soup, which makes the broth creamier and tastier! I grow herbs all year long, even greens such as dinosaur kale for my white bean soup 🥣 All of these things save money on a food budget. Black bean soup, black bean enchiladas, black bean hummus. For a little over a dollar a pound, one can be very creative with nutritious beans 🫘

You encouraged me so much earlier this week!!! I bought the turkey and we ate it last Sunday, had it in turkey and wild rice soup, put it into a quiche for a breakfast, and then made a pasta bake with the last of the meat and used all my "old" last veggies in the fridge...and I have made 6 quarts of turkey bone broth that I put into the freezer. Thanks for the thoughts and push to be more of a fighter. I have always done this but you really gave me a big loving pep talk. I am heading to do my big grocery shopping in a couple of days, this is when I shop for my family of seven for 2-3 weeks at a time. I have really thought a lot and look forward to seeing what I can do to decrease how much I am spending.

Glad I found your channel tonight! I've subscribed and binge watched 😊. I raised 6 littles and didn't have a home computer til 2001- internet was dial-up/awful then. I sure wish I had access to KZbin videos such as this then! I was "strange" to most people/women who looked down upon me for being a SAHM after our 3rd child. I was your age then- and Over the Moon to be able to stay home and raise our littles with Our Values, nurse my babies, and make home cooked meals! I ignored the ridicule. I could have used the support of people such as you then, Laramie! I felt so alone in my/our decisions how to raise our family. My 6 littles are now grown. 5 are doing well. 1 struggles. I keep praying. But bless you for having the courage to be the mom/family that you are in this exceptionally concerning culture. God Bless You. Oh my initial reason for responding is that due to limited eyesight from birth- I can't keep up with subtitled videos. I much prefer your speaking videos.

Even as a single gal I make everything from scratch. And I didn’t know adding apple cider vinegar to the bone broth helps bring out the nutrients, so I’ll try that next time. I normally put mine in the crockpot for six- eight hours everyone who buys chicken or turkey can get the best bone broth after. Another sidenote, instead of adding cream or milk to mashed potatoes, had bone broth it’s amazing.

One thing I decided to do this year is keep the juice from the pumpkin I baked for making desserts. My mom always dumped the juice down the drain when she pressed the juice out of her pumpkin to make puree. I realized that if I keep the juice in a container in the fridge, I can add it to soup or rice for nutrients and flavor.

A pot of soup simmering on the stove feeds the spirit first - welcoming you in from the cold -- then it nourishes the body with its broth and tasty vegetables. When we lived up north I made soup a couple times a week --- We were restoring a 120 year old home and coming in from clearing snow or bringing in firewood, nothing was better than smelling a pot of soup simmering or bread baking. Sometimes I'd even just keep a pot of broth on a very low simmer and pour us each a mug of that instead of tea, to warm us up. Be blessed!

Hello, sweet lady. My husband is ninety, and I’m middle sixties. We work a piece of land, and I take care of a house. Soups have always saved me. A couple times a month I make a huge pot, break it down into freezer bags, and am set for hearty meals when we are swamped with work. It’s a healthy alternative. You remind me of my grandparents. Once a week they made icebox soup. They cleaned the fridge, and everything went in the pot. It was never the same, but always good. Our house saying, “nothing goes to waste.” Blessings all.

A soup base like this one can also become a casserole, with a thick gravy it can top rice or pasta when extra calories are needed. If you're short of time a crock pot is an alternative. I'm an empty nester, but for years I'd have between two and four freezer bags of vegetable trimmings and bones, which would be cooked once or twice a month to create various batches of broth or stock to be frozen or dehydrated for storage (now I just jar a batch in the pressure canner a couple times a year).

Hi ! I just found your channel the other day. I love it! I often talk about how home making is a dying art, it needs to be revived! I’ve been cooking from scratch for most of my adult life. Even when I worked outside of my home. It’s so much more affordable and healthier for us. Thank you for being so sweet and down to earth. ❤️

I just learned about adding about a teaspoon of some sort of acid, vinegar, lemon, etc. Really helps round out the flavor. The soup you’re making is so yummy. What a great job you are doing with your life. I am learning so much from you. Keep going!

This was every meal(home made) when I was growing up. TV dinners became edible in my early 20's and frozen food was hitting its stride. Pre made stuff is getting out of control and if we want to eat and have a roof over our heads, this is what we are going to have to go back to. Thanks for the vids, I love them.

I just found a 22lb turkey for 39 cents a pound at my local Foodlion. It rang up for over $61 before the store card savings kicked in and it was less than $9 when I walked out of the door. A couple years ago I had 3-4 of these 39 cent a pound turkeys. A couple in the freezer and a couple in the fridge. I was canning turkey and turkey broth as fast as I could. I still have some on the shelf. The best was one that my neighbor raised and asked me if I wanted it. She had me come over and butcher it with her. It was HUGE! we had to cut it in half to fit it in the smoker. That was our Thanksgiving turkey. I canned the leftovers. The best part is, my neighbors unfortunately had to move but we helped the new neighbor move in and as a welcome home gift, we gave him some canned smoked Thanksgiving turkey that was raised and butchered on his land! He was thrilled. Canned turkey is so good. Sometimes we make a gravy with the broth and heat it all up and simply pour over mashed potatoes and serve with another veggie side or even pour over homemade buttermilk biscuits (hmmm...I haven't made that in awhile 🤔 gets out meal planned and takes not...). This is the only time of the year I can find health meat for 39 cents a pound!

I would definitely be interested to hear about buying a house for 22k. I'm guessing it was prior to inflation but here even a condemned, dilapidated, foreclosure with a collapsing roof is at least 100k. Not in a metro area. Your kitchen work definitely inspires me!
