I thought I'd watched this one already, but it's new to me. Great stuff! This kind of thing is very interesting to me. In the past, like the 50s, the only way to hear a young musician on their way to mastery was to hang out in jazz clubs. Which is great and everyone should do that anyway, but you can't hang out in every jazz club around the world. Here in 2023, I can sit here at my computer and witness the rise of the world's next superstar drummer. I'm particularly excited that Yoyoka linked up with Ai Furusato. I really hope they continue to play together. If you haven't listened to the songs they just put out, don't sleep on it. Ai's just as much a piano monster as Yoyoka is a drum monster. That main ostinato in This Moment slaps hard.

Good to hear from drummers how complex a song, rhythm, time, etc is. I have learned a lot from you regarding that. I liked your comment at the end about her playing with respect to the song and band mates… the people she plays with, new or experienced, respect her skills also. The drum sessions she had in Japan with a few greats, not too long ago, show that. Her interaction with the others shows her wonderful disposition. I hope she passes on to upcoming drummers, her skills and knowledge when she can.

She's a prodigy, period. When I first heard what she was doing when she was 8 yrs old, I said it's freaky, almost like she's Bonzo reincarnated... Concerning polyphonic jazz rhythms... Elvin Jones would be damn proud of her! I heard him live at Yoshi's in Oakland, (25 years ago) greatest jazz drummer for me.. unbelievable. Craziest solos, mind blowing technique, then able to bring us all back down to Earth, with the smoothest wire brush work on his snare. I tell ya, greatest I've seen until now, if she keeps improving, it's going to be amazing for all of us to witness...

Yes 13.5 y.o. (10-12-2009). WOW, this is Senri level stuff! Tell us how you really feel Wave! LOL She has been doing this so long, not only does she make it LOOK easy, she just doesn't get nervous or mess up, live or in studio. When she was in Vegas before the recording session for "Led Zeppelin's "The Ocean", she had practiced it one time the day before, but the day of the recording, we go to Ellen's (YT- EllenPlaysBass) house, she goes in Ellen's room and does "girly" stuff and some drawing, we go get ice cream, and at no time was she concerned about "getting ready" or practicing. She walks in the studio, sits down at a kit she's never seen, with band members she is just then meeting for the first time and has never played with, tunes the kit, adjusts the seat, etc., then without practicing at all with the other members, proceeds to NAIL IT on the FIRST TAKE! Everyone says she is a true professional. That is simply an understatement! She is actually NEXT LEVEL professional! There are tons of top notch, VERY famous bands and musicians that can't do this (except Bandmaid and Lovebites...LOL) Actually I guess she does get nervous occasionally, when people give her standing ovations and high praise it makes her nervous. Don't worry Wave, she will jam with you again! She will just have to use some of that constraint you're talking about...LOL She never feels like she is too goof to play with anybody, even low level musicians from Wisconsin (Inside joke - Wave has referred to himself in that way before, although we all know it's not true). Love to see Nandi TRY this!
@jimmorrisonisamaidiac Жыл бұрын
I would say as a band the Maids can not be topped. As for individual drummers, well it's not as simple for me. Akane is amazing, but Vinnie Colliuta sets the bar for me. Senri is at that top level. Well Yoyoka seems to be progressing so fast, she is reaching that level also. Her cover of Seven Days, covering Vinnie, was what I was waiting to see. What could be next? I guess just one Band-Maid cover would be nice, but maybe Shido will take care of that for us!
@Glen.Black. Жыл бұрын
@@jimmorrisonisamaidiac I agree with all that Jim. Last year I asked YOYOKA why she hadn't done any BandMaid covers yet. She kind of danced around telling me she didn't like drum triggers. She liked a more "natural" sound. I'm not a musician, so I wasn't sure what that had to do with doing covers, but I didn't push her because I could tell she wasn't really comfortable with my question. I think the only way we will ever see a BM cover is for a Patron to request it...LOL Shido will probably be loyal to what YOYOKA thinks. YOYOKA when she hears Shido practicing a BM song: "Are you freaking kidding me Shido! You play a BM song and I'll never teach you anything else on the drums." LOL
@chrisegbertky Жыл бұрын
@sms95501 if BandMaid are featured in one of his favorite animes then he just may cover them. Yoyoka is not a big fan of the Maids right now.
@jimmorrisonisamaidiac Жыл бұрын
@@Glen.Black. Hmmm, I'll throw in on a Patreon request for Yoyoka... What song should it be? I also asked about Band-Maid once in a Superchat during a live stream about a year ago. I forget exactly what Yoyoka said, but I got the idea not to bother her about it again. If she had anything really nice to say about our Maids she almost surely would have. She was there for the Last Rockstars in Hollywood, if that did not do it not much else will. As for Shido, well, what are the chances that both of them don't "get it?" Well, no matter what about Band-Maid, that dude is blowing my mind doing Yes and King Crimson. He seems to be more about Prog that his sister was at the same age. Your point about having help from Yoyoka rings true, she must have coached him through the songs I referenced. Those songs he did play make BM songs seem tame, as far as learning goes. And no matter how much coaching he needed, the guy actually pulled it off. I'll conclude with a BM analogy, so what if the Maids use click tracks, gentle backing tracks, and drum triggers? It is still them, playing for real. Just like Shido, after all the finest teachers, you gotta actually play it, and he does. Now come on Shido, I vote for Black Hole!

She seems almost entirely void of angst. Her solos are excellent, but I agree with tendency to fill in (no pun intended) with lightning fast fills. (i) Her kick technique - it blew me away what she was doing at 8, when she couldn't even reach the pedal properly (ii) her age - obviously! and (iii) channelling Bonzo - she didn't come across at 8 like a driven-hard-by-parents prodigy who'd had all the fun drilled out of her - she was _feeling_ that Led Zep and channelling the joy as well as the technique!

In the beginning that kick drum beat sounds like my HD roadking 😂😂😂.
Wave, you likely know this because you've played with Yoyoka, and the beginning of this video is a good example of some of the cognitive dissonance I've experienced. In many of these videos, Yoyoka's persona, her waving, and faux-niceness, seems forced, suggesting maybe she's not quite what her videos suggest. I've met her and watched her play in person now two times. Her talent is effortless. I saw her play a number of covers, as well as some original work of hers and her signature "Sparkle." During all the playing it felt and looked like all of it was very easy for her. Speaking with her directly, she is incredibly nice and approachable. When I talked with her, she didn't seem conceited at all. A tiny bit shy, but one might expect that for someone her age thrust into environments dominated by adults. I was struck by how easy she is to talk to, she even seemed to welcome conversation where others might be too concerned with their English skill to try and talk much. She also seemed mature beyond her years. Not like a jaded 35 year old, but more like a confident 22 year old with a purpose. It was refreshing when you consider your average teenager these days with their nose buried in their phone. Given the authority she plays with, I was a tiny bit surprised by how petite she is. Her capabilities, skill level, social skills, and everything else about her suggests she is far more capable in every sphere than her age belies. So her high skill in drumming seems echoed in other skill areas of hers, that her cognitive and social skills are as advanced as her drumming is. It's no wonder that, like you, she's a multi-instrumentalist. Hopefully she & her family can successfully navigate the media industry, which isn't known for its niceness. I know she's getting around, I saw a video of her playing with Jack Black & some others. I'd hate to see Hollywood chew her up & spit her out. She has far too much to offer the world. I also hope a world dominated by computerized music can still appreciate analog, skills-based musicians. They deserve to be appreciated. Drummers in particular are magic. People play Guitar Hero, pretending to play guitar, and start to think they're musicians. Playing a real guitar, and playing a game guitar, are as different as playing Call Of Duty and having bullets wiz by your head in real combat. The real skill that drummers possess is uneclipsed by any other instrument I know of.
