Apart from school, YOYOKA is currently a regular for a couple of rock numbers every couple of weeks at the Ulimate Jam show at the Whisky A Go Go, is recording albums with the Ken Ocada Group and recently, with the same band breezed through a 1hour 50minute set at the San Jose Jazz Break Room venue. She was a full member of the band taking mid-number solos and an individual one, all in the jazz idiom. Right up your Street Andrew. Hope you have a chance to peek. The penultimate number Traces I find intriguing starting aroung the 1hr40 mark of the full video of the set on the San Jose Jazz channel.

The part that blows my mind is the ghost notes in the section that starts for the first time at 5:15. Danny Carey doesn't play them (or rather he plays them once on the intro to the second chorus), but Yoyoka plays them every time, and they're ridiculously uniform each time. They help glue the riff together and support the vocal. She really makes the song her own because you can really hear her more Bonham/Ian Paice-influenced style at the same time as she's hitting all of the touchpoints of the original.

Yeah, the snare ghosting is very different compared to the original. A really good idea to fill things out on a smaller kit too. Very creative!

I don’t think there is anything or any genre of music that Yoyoka can’t play. Even at age 14, her talent and ability to quickly learn and flawlessly perform new songs with seemingly little effort makes her an ideal session drummer. 🤯 (as usual)

It would be a serious understatement to say that Yoyoka is a drum prodigy. She is outrageously loose and tight at the same time. As cool as a cucumber. Yoyoka is also obviously very happy while playing drums and that is what's really important in the end. I have been following her drumming since she was 8 years old and she still never ceases to amaze me.

Awesome reaction as always and technical breakdown. Prior to this cover release she had already played this live unrehearsed with no sound check at Whiskey A Go Go with pro musicians she had not played with and absolutely drove the bus with authority! A school night as well. The respect she is gathering from all the musicians she plays with is excellent. I love your comments about not needing gear to cover a song. Many people seem to equate skill with the amount of gear you have. Neil Peart showed this during a Buddy Rich tribute with a simple kit.

Thanks for the great reaction, AS ALWAYS! But, with all due respect Andrew, at this point is she really "tackling" a song, as you say, or just looking for a song that challenges her to the point where she actually has to think about what she's playing and not "what's for dinner"? I'm jesting you Andrew, but it's true. In an interview a while back she was asked, "What do you think about when you're playing a song?" And our "cheeky" (Ian Paice reference) little friend says, "Sometimes, I'm thinking about what's for dinner." And as usual, she takes a really complex song and just makes it look like any beginner could play it. YOYOKA is truly amazing. And thanks for providing that difficulty level , would love to hear that on all her songs, as some of us are not musicians and it helps us understand how really great she is, or is that just redundant? LOL Thanks again!

She plays like a lot of great classical musicians-the instrument is a natural extension of the body, which is an expression of inner intention. Like you said, Andrew, she looks slower than she is because there’s nothing wasted in the path from the mind to the instrument. The great piano teacher Sebok used to say, “You don’t have to DO anything, it’s already in the music.”

"Yoyoka doesn't read music" I question this now... I know that had been the case previously. In her videos in the studio recording with Ken Okada, she has a music stand next to her hats, and a time or two she looks over at it. I can't tell (in 360p) what is on the page... but it looks too long to be a chart, yet not dense enough to be a note for note drum score. Even if it is simply melody + changes... she does appear to be referring to it. So, I'd guess she has been working on it. and that's awesome!
@janbleeker

If I understood Yoyoka correctly, she ‘follows’ the music on the papers, so she knows where everyone is in the song. She doesn’t use the papers to read a drum score.

Hey Andrew. I re-watch a lot of your reactions (because they are great) to YOYOKA when they come up in the side bar. While watching, you commented on her "new" crossover thing. Made me laugh because of a fairly recent video she posted where she did a crazier version of the crossover while playing with Simon Phillips (former drummer for Toto, Judas Priest and The Who). Simon's reaction just cracked me the hell up. I won't tell you what it was, but a little clue: Simon got schooled by YOYOKA....lol I mean that in a good and humorous way, with absolutely no disrespect to Simon Phillips. He's a legend! You should check it out for a laugh. If you don't want to watch the whole thing, it happens during her run at 1:50 " Mini Drum Battle with Simon Phillips " kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y6iTZpyeotOMgbc. I think I even loved YOYOKA's reaction to Simon's reaction better. Have to say YOYOKA is already a legend herself. No need to wait for fame and fortune to prove that! Enjoy!
