Not banned, simply an exclusive stand-up striking art. Mostly fists, kicks no higher than waist. Close-quarter emphasis for self-defense using simultaneous defensive and counter-offensive striking. No emphasis on take-downs, throws, grappling, ground-technique, locks/ submission holds all essential to a rounded MMA fighter. As with all Traditional Martial Arts its confined to the repetoire of techniques mostly expressed in its standing forms. In Wing Chuns case 3 forms, Si Lum Tao, Chum Kil and Bil Jee. Aside from looking flashy in choreographed film sequences, the actual core emphasis in Wing Chun is developing awareness + superior counter-reflex/ reactivity to your opponents attacks through partner drills such as Chi Sau. While Chi Sau works on developing spontaneous flow of awareness and technique in close-quarter contact it is not free-sparring. I found Wing Chun immediately relatable in principle and practice as a stand-alone striking art and arguably my favourite Martial Art to learn as its combat principles are spot-on. While Bruce Lee acknowledged its effectiveness (likely thanks to the tutelage of his Legendary Grandmaster Ip Man) he recognised its limitations along with those of all Traditional Martial Arts. No single Blue-Print provides the theory on everything you might experience or require in a fighting situation. Thats how MMA was born. Mixed Martial Arts is as simple as that. Once fighters from different disciplines came together to test their styles head-on in arena's like UFC they discovered the limitations of single-style combat. Diversity of technique and understanding reduces the individual confining themselves to one mindset, one set of inevitably predictable tools. Big hitters dominated the early Octagon until the Gracie's stepped-in with BJJ. Once fighters got used to BJJ, Gracie dominance declined etc. Today almost all MMA fighters are the rounded product of training across disciplines. Its proven to work in the Octagon and what works in practice will work in reality when required. The only danger of using just Wing Chun in an MMA contest is that you might get out-kicked, out-punched from range, taken down and tied up. That simple.

It´s true. Wing Chun, Hung Gar, and other Kung Fu martial arts are not meant to be a sport but a real way to take down enemies quickly, which mean going straight for breaking knees, elbows, punching to the throat, eye gouging and other very dangerous moves that were never meant to be used in just a fighting sport. When in MMA, a very advanced Kung Fu practicioner would be holding back so many of their moves and training that it simply makes no sense to even be there at all. Kung Fu also teaches people to avoid fighting using these moves at all unless they´re really trying to harm someone, which should only happen when you´re trying to protect yourself, a loved one or somebody in very serious danger. Kung Fu is more of a lifestyle and not really meant for simply "fighting".

The concept of the non-application of dangerous moves is valid for pretty much every discipline. They all have moves fighters are not permitted to use. MMA is a sport and its rules are not a limit of the Kung Fu practitioners alone.

Wing Chung can supplement other arts if used correctly. I wouldn't go into MMA with only Wing Chung just as I wouldn't go into MMA with only Aikido. If you want to compete in the octagon... Jujitsu, Judo or wrestling (Sambo say) with Karate or Muay Thai with a boxing background and an agreement to stick to the rules for safety reasons... is necessary for success. On the streets... gouge eyes, kick groins, crush knees, throat strikes... against a possibly armed and determined attacker... is all fair play, just not in the Octagon.

Exactly, that's the difference. Mma won't allow more than half the moves that are taught in advanced martial arts. These moves are killing moves and only work properly with self-defense in mind. I've seen some sht in my time and can completely back up that Kung Fu and WC are real and in the right person's move set are extremely dangerous. Everyone is badass till their eye is ripped out, and half their face is hanging off because someone fishhooked them and didn't show restraint. I knew the comments were gonna be salty lol. So in case anyone is curious I'll give the answer. First full disclosure. I am not a martial artists. I have no attachment to any martial arts practice, in simply an outside, non biased observer who enjoys learning about different things. It just so happy a martial arts is one of those things and I have learned a lot. So first of all when it comes to "what's best" there is a lot of subjectivity. Some martial arts are better in practice (against a resisting opponent) simply because practicing against a resisting opponent is PART of the practice. That's why some traditional martial arts like akiodo get flack and are generally looked down upon by the self defense folk. Akaido usually (emphisis on usually) is not practiced competitively or against someone who is actually fighting back. That being said not all martial arts are meant for self defense. Some are strictly for competing against other practitioners of the same type. Others are simply just good exercise and muscle control (although the definiton, especially the "martial" part, becomes a bit blurred in that case.) Be that at is may there is usually always a take away from each art form that can be learned and applied to a larger mma practice. There have also been some mma fighters who have innovated in a way that allows them to use art forms that were previously thought to not be practical to great effect. So yes the title is click bait, wing chun is not banned. It is also, in and of itself, not considered a very effective martial art when it comes to practical self defense. As a matter of fact there is a lot of propaganda in China around traditional martial arts. So much so that they have gone after mma practitioners for calling out traditional martial arts as ineffective and basically ruined their lives. There some guy (I forgot his name but in sure someone will remember) whos name often comes up when you search this. He has actually effortless beaten wing chun "masters" to prove a point after they ruined him and made it impossible for him to get a job and such. Lastly its important to realize when it comes to self defense there really is no perfect substitute for the real thing. Obviously in the gym you aren't trying to cause each other serious injury. Your also practicing on a padded mat, wearing a gee or just gym shorts, against other people who also know martial arts and are unarmed. That's not to say practice doesn't help. But on the street, people aren't going to tell you they are going to attack you. They have no qualms about how much they injury you, they may or may not outnumber you, and they are likely armed. The best self defense is preparation and awareness. Be aware of your surroundings, avoid fighting unless you need to, and even then your goal should be your own safety not to beat the crap out of your attackers. Get away and get safe!

Never let your enemy control the pace of the battle. Utilize every available skill you have to end any and all fights as quickly as possible, never ever underestimate an opponent Because overconfidence will get you destroyed in a street fight. A: Hey, did you hear about the chicken that started taking Wing Chun classes? B: No, what happened? A: Well, the chicken mastered all the techniques and became a real kung fu expert. B: That’s hilarious! Did it have a special move? A: Yeah, it’s signature move was called the "Flying Peck!" B: Haha, I bet it was unbeatable in a Wing Chun fight. A: Absolutely! Whenever someone tried to challenge it, they’d end up being "chicken" out!

It's not banned but there's a lot of rules in MMA that makes MMA defy some of the basic fighting skills of most Fighting genres. Like they don't allow pressure points grabbing....or hitting in the temple or kick to the knee or groin. That's why everyone is now wrestling in MMA...if pressure points were allowed you could not win with wrestling someone. I had a friend that tried it on my and I just slightly pounded his temples not even hard and he fell back. Also first things you learn is going for the eyes if someone grabs you. It's not allowed in MMA. Martial Art is made for defense and survival not for sport...mma is a sport...it's not true mix martial art.

I can see how Wing Chun would be good for developing speed & quick, accurate striking. Perhaps that's how Bruce Lee developed his lightning fast hand, elbow strikes & thunderous kicks for such a slight person. However, whatever he learned from Wing Chun he obviously incorporated it into his style of fighting. There's no question he was fast as greased lightning & hit like a blow from Thor's hammer.😉

Two problems with the title of this video. The Wing Chun "Masters" that have gotten in a ring over the past couple of years have gotten their asses handed to them. There is no Martial Art that has been banned in MMA. The last fighter to use close to a single style that I remember was Lyoto Machida, using Shotokan Karate primarily, which was pretty effective.

Wing Chun has never been banned in MMA. It simply doesn't work for practitioners without regular sparing experience with people from outside of the system. Classical mess doesn't work! Real world experience and adaptation works. Just about all martial arts have deadly techniques that are banned from MMA so it's no more an excuse for Wing Chun than it is for anything else. Other striking martial arts practitioners also train on being able to stay on their feet or in getting out of ground hold positions when taken down. Wing Chun practitioners could do that as well if they only chose to. They could also focus on the Chin Na arm-locking techniques inherent to Wing Chun and most Chinese systems. In short, it's not Wing Chun that's the actual failure, it's the impractical experience of its practitioners that's the failure.

I imagine all fighting styles have effective qualities, but they are not equal, and nor are their learning curves. I think that mastering boxing is much easier than mastering wing chun. By the time mastery is achieved in wing chun, those few who have are probably too old or unwilling to use it for sport of this kind. Thus the pool of representatives is extremely small.

Wing Chun was created for selfdefense (as Karate, Kung fu, and so on…) MMA is a sport, a hard sport. But it is not selfdefense. A weak and untrained person cannot fight in MMA, but can kill or cripple another human being if he/she knows how to. People have some weak spots relatively easy to attack if you know where and how to.
