I've noticed it's a common trait amongst all races/cultures. Men can date any Women of their choosing, but if a woman dates outside her race she's seen as promiscuous. I think (in general) men feel a certain ownership of women and women enter interracial relationships, men feel like their being robbed of what's "theirs"

@Nova Hrvatska culture always shifts and changes with the flow of time. That's a very... conservative view. It also depends on what time period of culture you are trying to "preserve". 1820? 1950? Culture is changed by the unchanging march of time. You can try to fight it. Good luck with that though

I mean, this isn't true unless you unironically believe racism is over. Sure, there aren't any inherent differences between interracial and other relationships, but there can be very real anxieties about them from the people involved. Jordan Peele made a whole ass horror movie about the existential dread he felt visiting his white girlfriend's liberal family, because of the way they act around a single black man. Hell, I've dated a hispanic woman and her family was incredibly weird about our relationship. There's nothing immoral or wrong with interracial relationships, simultaneously we shouldn't pretend there aren't weird social hangups around them that make participating in them challenging at times.

Agreed. I often think of it like how some young kids can be little shits at school and find any number of dumb reasons for picking on another kid. Dumb lunchbox, weird hair color, wrong backpack, etc., or the point a lot of leftist YTers make about fascists that, even if they did ever "cleanse" society of all other races, or whoever they have a grudge against, their frenzied outgroup paranoia wouldn't end, they'd jut shift the goalposts. If it's white nationalists, once all the non whites are gone, then it'll be all the gays, then all the non aryans, then people with long hair and colorful clothes, then anyone who has an index finger longer than their ring finger, etc, etc, etc. It's honestly one of those things that's interesting to ponder, whether humanity could ever reach a point where we don't make out groups, or if othering will always exist on some level, but that's also such a far off end point that it feels like there's little point pondering it too hard since most likely neither of us will see it in either of our lifetimes combined, and then take the number of our combined years multiplied tenfold and we'd still be super far off from a theorized endpoint.

Racial distinctions exist because of socio-historic reasons. Arbitary in group/out-group distinctions do not come about just because. Black Africans were, in pre-colonial times, not seen as necessarily less than Europeans. Europe actually mythologized a black christian king in Ethiopia, Prester John, whose civilization they believed to be equal or even greater than that of Europe. When the European merchants visited West Africa, they saw a culture as flourishing and vibrant as European culture. Black people only became othered and racialized when the need for it occurred in the Americas, where Slavery was the dominant economic institutions post-colonial conquests. To believe Black people are less human than you allows you to morally justify the cruelty of slavery. *All* modern American racism towards black people is a descendant of this sociological need for racism. A similar need resulted in discrimination against Indigenous people, Hispanics, etc. Humanity does not need to be racist.

Honestly though, interracial is definitely a vice. We are fortunate as humans to live in a world where there are people of all sorts of racial backgrounds. Black grandparents tend to have some (often significant) degree of racism against white people, because they can't shake feelings that all white people are secretly racist against them. They can't accept that in their current time or current area, things may be at least slightly better. If they grew up in the rural south and had a bunch of negative experiences growing up with racism, then even when living in an entirely different, progressive, majority-democrat urban area, the concern of being discriminated against is equally powerful. If you're white, they may be polite to you in conversation, but they are going to analyze every aspect of your interaction HEAVILY. Because the default assumption is that you think lowly of them. Best case scenario is that they get used to you as an in-law, and you become one of the exceptions. It's pretty bad. The reasons that they feel that way tend to reinforce my point. My grandmother doesnt like it when rich black celebrities get with poorer white women, because she thinks that she would have had opportunities to get that rich elsewise due to her race, and he should have pulled a sister out of the gutters. It doesnt excuse the racism, and is still really bad logic. But the only way to really "understand" is to get the answers from them. I don't really have to do much work to get these answers, because I'm black and these are my family. But if you can find any older black people who are willing to be honest with you, I'd definitely chat it out with them. Don't do it with younger people who feel the same way, they're always insane.

Idk if you're a teenager or have young parents, but grandparents? Them too, but for a lot of us it's our parents/aunts and uncles. It wasn't that long ago as people like to pretend. To this point, I have two aunties who are RACIST as hell. Oh, they call white people all kinds of demons and say they can't be trusted. However, they also grew up in the 50s and 60s in rural Louisiana (and later Texas) before and slightly after Brown v. Board of Education and before the Civil Rights Movement culminated. So, am I that worried about their prejudice against white people? No. It makes sense to be frank and the logic isn't as silly as you suggest (in my opinion but do you). As for younger people who do this, like you said, I think its catharsis and envy (CONTRA) but obviously envy in the sense as contra described and not in the layman sense of the term.

I think preferences are OK if it's simply about who you find physically attractive. The problem comes in when you attach cultural (or sexual) stereotypes to certain races. There's a difference between (for example) "I think Black women are hot" and "I think Black women are naturally better in bed" since the latter is less about physical attractiveness and more about an assumption about a racialized "culture" (and one typically rooted in racist ideas of Black women and men as being naturally promiscuous). The latter is just racist.

Like, it’s one thing to have a preference or fetish (as long as both parties are happy I guess) but just for the purpose of making kids??? The funniest/most tragic are the fully 100% Japanese women who think a white man will give them blonde-haired, blue-eyed babies. Oh no, honey. No one told you…

Be aware that for black/white mixed people, some consider themselves mixed and some consider themselves black. When a black person dates a mixed black/white person, most of the times that’s not considered an interracial relationship. Whereas for white dating black/white, it’s typically considered interracial dating. That’s why it can appear that black people have a lower interracial dating rate. It’s the same for other black/mixed people. Also, most black people are very much mixed people due to slavery and living with some Native American tribes

The issue of interracial dating in the black community is even more nuanced than that. Even socially liberal black people have an issue with it at times. Because white supremacy can impact who you choose to date. A black man who grew up in America probably would have been taught that whiteness was the standard of beauty. As a result women who are either white or who are as close to whiteness as possible are seen as more attractive. Or a black woman may see a white man as attractive because she wants her child to have “good hair”. This is a result of colonization and white supremacy that even black leftists will point out when it comes to IR dating. That being said, date who you want to date. There is a difference between falling in love with someone who happens to be another race and dating someone because they are that race.

That shit has an effect on people who aren't held up the same way, and being a little more conscious about representation in media and having diverse communities helps (though obviously the goal of that isn't mainly or exclusively changing who people are attracted to and you still shouldn't ever feel bad about who you are attracted to or try to force yourself to like anyone)

Just want to say that a lot of kinks and fetishes come from "problematic" places. But imo we need to be okay with people exploring those things, as long as it's between two consenting adults. If one of the people involved isn't okay with that particular scene, then that decides that. So yes, there may be roots of racism in some of this stuff. But I mean... people have loads of sexual RP fantasies that would be extremely messed up if it were "real". I think exploring stuff in a healthy, constructive environment is fine. Anything else is sex negative.

its even more complicated when you are a different race than your parents. i swear the amount of times ive had stares or comments about being my dads "mail order bride" is astonishing. i was surprised to see many asians say the n word in the cities too, as someone from the suburbs. but i mean, there is some nuance in that race is seen so much through a black and white lens in america, that its hard for newer immigrants to form a solid american identity that isnt based on people who are already here. it explains why so many asians take on hip hop culture as an outlet, as an aesthetic. that being said, it certainly doesnt justify them using it at all. but i think there should be a distinction between some white suburban guy repeating it in a hip hop song versus rapper $tupid young who grew up in the hood in long beach. i know many koreans specifically view hip hop culture as a form of rebellion against their traditional immigrant parents, but also many koreans relate to the messages because of the oppression during the korean war, japanese occupation, and the racism they faced when they came to america. im going on an unrelated tangent but overall, many poc wish for solidarity and i do think there should be nuance given when discussing racial dynamics among poc versus between poc and white people.

You can't control who you're attracted to, if you tend to have a preference for one race over another that isn't necessarily a conscience decision. So I don't think it is racist to be attracted to specific races more than others. It is just something that can happen. Now, it can get to a point where it can be fetishized but that is if the race is something you consciously sought out specifically for the fact of that person being that race. Like, if it's the most important factor when you're considering a partner.

I have a strange relationship with my use of the n word. I’m Afro-Latino, but I’m relatively lightskin, I also grew up in South Africa where the N-word is still bad, but it doesn’t pack as much hatred in it as it does in the US because we have our own words that we see as much worst and LITERALLY no one says unless they’re racist or discussing racism, this is the K-word. I have used the N-word all my life especially when rapping to a song or talking to friends, including my black friends and in South Africa especially in Cape Town where I grew up we have a 3rd in between race that we call coloured which is what I’m considered in South Africa. Coloured people have a similar background to Latin-Americans and Afro-Americans which begins in slavery and they have seen themselves inspired and have found a kinship in Afro and Latin American culture. This is what I grew up in and these people say the N word all the time… is it wrong for me to use that word?? I understand the cultural significance and honestly I’ve never had a darker skinned friend or a black friend ever really care about my use of it in South Africa… but outside in Europe I’m scared with my black friends here to use it sometimes because they have a different history with it maybe. Legit any black people who could help me out with this would be appreciated, I also have black heritage, I’m not logic level lightskin but maybe a bit more like Obama if I could compare my skin colour.
