It occurred toe today that the kitchen garden is starting to look like a small scale raised bed garden from the old roots and refuge farm. Maybe you should get a mini pink door and a climbing rose! Or a little picket fence with painted sunflowers!

We had about 10 baby goats when we had my daughter's 7th birthday party. I had no idea the children were even going to be interested in them but they ended up being the stars of the show, along with our mini pony. Those wild and crazy goat loving kids are graduating high school this year and several still tell me it was the best birthday party ever! ♥🐐

Also, with that style chicken roller pen, with the fence you can put wheels on the front, too. That way you can pour feed on the ground where the pen will be going, in a line in the middle where the chickens will gather and not under the wheels while you push from behind/the side. Richard Perkins has a video showing how he does that process. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nGbJg5eel8h6aM0

Jessica, why don't you use raised beds for that areas that you bought the woven fabric for? Make the beds deep enough to plant carrots, but that is what we are gonna do, we already started laying down the woven fabric and placing raised beds on it to plant some stuff.

I watched Black Gumbo today and he was showing the pros and cons of using a flame thrower to get rid of the weeds like Bermuda/Devil's grass roots in his beds to prep for fall. He also mentioned a future episode would feature a special guest, a Southern lady, that he liked. So many comments asked if it would be YOU. He said no, he probably wasn't on your radar. He let his young son handle the flame thrower. I don't know if that was a good idea, but a flame thrower for a large area is. Ben is so adorable 🤗

Jess, the fabric is only for one season. You can roll it up and move it in the spring to a new spot for other plants with the same spacing. It's a fast easy way to get you through this winter and buy you more time to prep your soil the way you want. It also helps keep your soil warm when it gets cold so that might buy you more time too. You can also recycle it in smaller pieces for problem areas with spotty weed pressure or under produce to keep it clean- like pumpkins and melons. So you can really get your money's worth and not feel like you're cheating ;)

So sweet dropping off soup on friends door steps. Smart to "ding-dong-ditch" the soup. I did that for my sister during H1N1. YES... my own sister. Rang the bell and ran away. But seriously... bless you for making the best soup ever to help them get through this trying time. Thank you for sharing and taking us along with you on your new homestead.

We have Bermuda. I weed wacked it back to the dirt, put on weed burn weed killer, put on a black tarp, waited 2 months(hot summer).... put down more weed grass killer, put down card board all over, added the raised beds covered the in-between with fabric cloth and put in a 10" barrier around the garden area 6" below ground and 4" above ground started growing. 1 year later the bermuda has grown back in in the garden area. It is super hard to control. Good luck!

Now we've heard "You may be a crazy chicken lady/guy if..." but now we know what one of the requirements for "You may be a crazy farm boy" is. It's believing that playing with baby goats on your birthday is better than the trampoline Park! LOL. Just want to snuggle that kid & keep him little forever when he says things like that. Wish I had all or even some of those times from my own children on video. Any time I'm having a hard day I would pull it up and watch again. Like having a warm hug and bright smile to make everything better!

For the new section of my garden, we laid some spent hay down over our grass, then we topped with lots of compost. Like 6 or more inches. Then we planted and mulched. We use the fabric for our walkways. That worked out really well for us. We did have to pull some weeds until the plants got large and not much came through after that.

Cover the tarp, with old straw, and grass clippings the extra heat will kill the grass. And you can just add that to your composting. Just roll the tarp to take it all off at once. Then you can tie the ends and pull with four wheeler, or ridding mower, to your composting site. Blessings, Prayers Always.

This has nothing to do with todays vlog, but I just had to tell you (I hope you see it) Remember when you left one of your tomatoes to do what it wanted in Arkansas? I did that with one of my Peron tomatoes. Yes it grew EVERYWHERE! But I got more tomatoes off that bush than combined from the rest of the plants I planted. It is still producing and has a lot more green tomatoes on it right now. I just hope I can harvest them before the first frost. First year I have grown Peron (seeds from Baker's Creek) and they will be my go to tomatoes for next year (they are delicious)

Thank you so much for the giggle about "being a frost tender variety"! I was born in W.VA and lived along the Ohio River in 2nd grade. I remember I missed the city bus to school & alone I had to walk across the bridge to school. The river was frozen &. I was pushing against the wind when my 7 year old self said "This is No Way to Live"! I didn't know anything else but my body hated the cold & snow. Spirit heard me, Shortly after we moved to So.California. I have loved the Sunshine & warmth for my body & soul. Perfect! Confession 6 decades later .. I actually turned the heater on yesterday it was 54 out at 7am! ha! I might be a " frost tender perennial variety". I enjoy your channel & think you and Jeremiah have crazy good skills perfect for homesteading, teaching & KZbin! Bright Blessings All

I had Bermuda grass. I hate trying to grow gardens in it. You CANNOT get rid of it. The roots run deep and send runners. They will come up wherever you make holes in the woven cloth. The only way I was able to garden without it was raised beds that didn't touch the ground, or an impermeable garden bed, which cost too much for me.
