My husband and I built a timber frame home with tongue and groove pine ceilings. It was recommended that the pine be oiled, not stained. The oil treats and preserves the wood while leaving the wood natural.

Trent, when installing tongued and groove boards, or any board that you want tight up, use an off cut of the board, say a foot long, and place that on the tongue of the board you are fixing. You can then hammer that up without fear of damaging the main board and just keep getting a fresh off cut as it gets damaged from repeated hammering! Never hammer straight onto the tongue, even with a rubber mallet. The surest way to damage the tongue! Keep up the good work, look forward to the videos each week. 🇬🇧

While it does look great as it is, it would do well to, either 1) use Valspar clear seal, or 2) use Valspar clear varnish. That brand never yellowed my 100+ year old hardwood floors. One main reason to do that is, besides protecting it, is preventing bugs being attracted to the raw wood. Keep in mind your window and door trim will not match the ceiling! Anyway, the house is coming along beautifully! The boys are beautiful and I’m so glad to see that Jennifer is better! Sending love and blessings ❤️🙏🏼

Trent, when your doing the T&G use about a 12” piece of the scrap to use when your hitting it with a hammer so you don’t break or damage the tongue or grove. The scrap will lock into the piece your wanting to move and will take the damage from the hammering. Just a little tip.

Trent is right about not sealing or staining the pine T&G ceiling. I have pine T&G in my home that I installed 25 years ago. It gradually changed from the light pine to a beautiful honey color over the 25 years.

I visited a friend once in a cabin with unsealed wood walls and ceilings… cobwebs and any dust and dirt on it was so hard to clean. I would at least put a basic sealer on it. Then all that stuff will come off easily with a flick of your duster.
@aprilhuffstutler14192 ай бұрын
If you don't treat the ceiling it may turn gray, not yellow. If you like the pine color, you could varnish it with a matte finish and then not worry about it. You're going to get cobwebs, etc up there. Varnish (polyurethane) will make it easier to keep clean.

Linseed oil For interior timber, linseed is a classic go-to option. Be sure to look for boiled linseed, which takes about 12 hours to one day to dry, as opposed to several days for standard linseed. The advantage of linseed is that it won't impact the color of the wood. It's also water-repellent.

The oil based stuff is what yellows over time. Water based stuff like policrylic made by Mineax seems to remain the same. The sun hitting it also makes it yellow which you won’t have on your ceiling. Personally I’m curious as to how it might look and age without finish on it. Ultimately it’s your house and you should like and not worry about others vies or opinions. The house is looking beautiful guys!

I know it's too late for the current ceiling, but for next time (or anyone else) - we had an enormous amount of ceiling (3200 square feet of house on two levels) and we used pine T&G as well. But (Gail's idea), we first coated each board with white stain and immediately wiped it off as thoroughly as possible. When dry, up it went. 18 years and we liked it as much at the end as at the beginning. No yellowing, always as bright as the day we put it up.
@yancie4372 ай бұрын
You can use linseed oil, Teak Oil and Danish Oil or some wood oil that will help preserve the wood and should not yellow the wood. and give the wood a sheen or shine to it but it looks more Natural!
@karincorbin23552 ай бұрын
You can also wax those ceiling boards. Paint and stain are not the only two wood finish choices. Wax comes in natural or stain colors. No drippy mess, no spray but there is plenty of labor to rub it on.
@marymurphy50692 ай бұрын
If sealed the color you like will stay, if not sealed it will change to a yellowish color and not constant If you seal it with a stain finis it will not be shiny, and will help to seal out odors. You can wait till you have it all up, then spray it all at one time for consistency I love the look of the ceiling

My boyfriend is a carpenter. We have been doing a lot of wood projects. Our favorite, on our island, has been Waterlox. But we have learned, different finishes work best for different surfaces. And different wood, needs different finishes. And different uses of wood, needs different finishes. It does take some research. We love the natural look of the Waterlox however on the surfaces we are using in our kitchen. The best !!! We are very interested, however, in using a wax sealer finish on some other projects we having coming up in the future.
@jmalone27582 ай бұрын
I've seen decks where the edge board had a 1" overhang with a shallow rabbit routed about 1/"4 from the edge. Reason for this is when water tries to run back under the board it hits the Sharpe edge of the rabbit and breaks away then falls off the board. Something cool to prevent the face boards from premature rotting.
@maur2far2 ай бұрын
Use Howard Feed-N-Wax. It’s a blend of beeswax, carnauba wax & orange oil to keep the wood from drying out, fading, or even cracking. And it smells great!
@ronmeadows31532 ай бұрын
Just use a water based clearcoat and you can have the look you want with minimal, if any, additional yellowing. You really want to protect the wood with something to keep it from getting dirty with dust.

Clear coat water based polyurethane won't change the color much (very slightly darken) and will seal it. Even just one coat applied with a roller will do it! And it will prevent it from yellowing over time.

@eugeneharris68982 ай бұрын
Just my 2 cents do as you desire with the ceiling. Clear poly will yellow over time. Leaving it raw will yellow overtime it is pine. The only difference you will notice is that dirt will collect on it in its natural stat and is harder to clean. A coat of polly will make it easier to clean. Finished you can use liquid to clean unfinished no liquids as ot will stain from the liquid and dirt as it sosks it in.

I'm truly impressed by Allie and Trent. Truly inspiring. I wish I could talk to them to learn how they do it. Of all the youtubers I follow, despite having had a hard year/few years, constant criticism or "you should/why don't you" 's of some commenters/armchair warriors, two kids and two dogs, a house build and lots and lots of stress, they keep an incredible work ethic, reliable output/quality and seeminly still are able to keep a good work/life balance at the few mentions of off-camera outings with friends. The people around them seem to be happy interacting with them, so they must be nice people. Trent seems to be kinder to himself recently, which I truly am happy to see as he is such a hard worker and doesn't deserve all the criticism thrown at him sometimes (yes "but safety/codes/personnal experience/how dare you" and blablabla, but there is a decent and less insulting way to put it people, come on, read your own comments out loud before posting them). I wish them continued success, they really deserve it.
@stevenhicks-pl8nq2 ай бұрын
You’re going to want to stain that ceiling. Wood starts to fade, gray out, warp contract and expand from moisture which causes cracks. Sealing it stops all that. Use a sealer first then You can go with a water based clear coat finish to minimize bringing out the yellow in the wood.

I know nothing about construction or wood; however, my two cents would be to leave the wood raw until next year to see how it weathers inside. If you think that you need to seal it at that time, then you can. The worst that will happen is that you will have to replace a few board. Also, your home in the mountains is looking so beautiful, you both (with the help of Brandon, Grayson and Jennifer) have built such an incredible home. I love the new wrap around deck cover, you are going to get so much more use of your veranda in the summer and in the winter. I’m so impressed with everything you both have accomplished.

Putting a seal on or not sealing wood is a personal choice. Many buildings in history were not sealed, and many of them have lasted for hundreds of years. The wood has changed, but in the case of old buildings the original owner is not there to know. If the choice of the finish rankles with you in the future, you always have the option to make a change. You chose what you've got, be happy and move on, life is far too short to carry regrets in a worry box.

I did the exact same thing you did, raw Pine on the ceiling. Then when the install was finished I white washed the Pine with a solution of white latex primer cut 1 to 1 with water. That was a little time consuming painting row by row with a brush. This sealed the wood in one step, and you still retained being able to see the grain. We are very happy with the results and after 8 years it still looks great. Keep up the good work, my wife and I look forward to all the videos of the family adventures and building projects.
