Large hopper sorters can get very laggy. One solution is to place composters on top of all hoppers with air above them. It stops the hoppers from checking if they have items above them to pick up. Why composters? Well they are fairly cheap and also don't do much besides collect plant-matter to convert to bone meal. You could use furnaces or other items with menu's, but those can be more resource intensive on your computer.

While composters definitely help for large-scale hopper chains, I think for most small to mid-size applications, hopper lag is not actually that bad. So, you don't have to worry too much if you leave a couple of hoppers open, but consider using composters once your hopper count hits larger numbers.

@1224chrisng 11 ай бұрын
You can also power them to lock it when not in use, which will reduce it to ~0 lag. Some arrangements of hoppers are worse than others, so a full hopper pointing a full chest will be ~1000x laggier than an empty hopper by itself (ilmango, 1.12), so prioritize locking those first

the real reason why composters is because it has 1 inventory slot that can be checked.

wait I don't understand, why would it stop hoppers from checking? idk much about hoppers but you said furnaces and hoppers can suck items from furnaces. Won't they check if there is smth to suck from furnaces???

Made massive item sorters before, loads of trial and error, but got them to work. Never understood them though. It all makes sense now, thanks! Very informative. Btw, allay item sorters are amazing for non stackable sorting. I ]also use them for sorting my raid farm to smelt for nuggets and burn the crossbows as fuel.

Overflow protection is cool and all, but for instance, when you sort expensive items, what are the chances that you'll overflow with them? And if you run a risk of overflowing your system with diamonds, you could sacrifice an additional 40 pieces. It's cool that you mentioned that issue, though. Now we can make an informed decision about when to implement costly overflow protection, and when isn't worth it.

Take in mind that you do not need 41 items as diamond...you can use 44 junk items +1 diamond 👍 So 11x4 junk items +1 for the filter for items that stuck into 64, 5/11/11/11 junk for items that stuck into 16.

A few years ago I optimized the item filter so you need 1 comparator less. The rest of the item filter is basically the same (same height, width, but shorter length -> more compact). Do you are interested in seeing this setup? I want to know whether this is something new, because I might do a short video about it, but it seems to obvious to find. At the same time I wonder why nobody uses it

instead of using a named Item, does it make sense to use something else,like sticks or regular iron nuggets, but you sort it out before every other item, then it wont disrupt the system, even if it happens to get into the input chest?

I think it's because if you accidentally put these sticks or whatever it will break

@@DavidV11 I think you misunderstood my comment. I was wondering, if its a good alternative to use a cheap item as a place holder, but sort the place holder item out first, instead of using named items, wich cost xp to make.

@rizalardiansyah4486

@@ulz_glc Yes you could. The problem is sometimes the filler item's sorter has to put those "accidental" filler inputs somewhere. There will be no problem *IF* you have the storage. But when you *DON'T* (which will happen eventually), there's gonna be overflows and everthing will be drained from the sorter. Hope you get what I mean. TLDR; it would be broken by overflows

Is there a specific reason why the hopper on the bottom of the hopper line always tries to get the items before the next hopper in the line?

Hoppers run on a global timer, and pulling items happens first before pushing items.

i like to think of it like "gravity;" an item can "fall" down a column of open hoppers and can only "walk" horizontally once it's on a stable level.

sure, that works. but your storage system will be a lot less compact. Stacking them right next to each other let's you put arbitrarily many in a long line of silos without sacrificing every other slice as buffer space. I typically use water ways for item delivery instead of a hopper line, then you need a natural buffer space every 9 slices on average cause of the water flow mechanics. That actually helps with declutter imo. Still much better for space economy.

what's the point of having it sort them for you if you have to walk three times as far to retrieve it later?
