Nice to meet you, Danny. I'm Andrea, and I used to have a collection of orchids. I moved, no longer with a greenhouse, and I have just 4 Phals now. It is a welcome sight to see you clear up the click-bate videos. I used to put cinnamon on the top of an orchid with crown rot, but maybe that was a wives' tale also. Anyway, you go, girl! What a timely video! I was given 3 orchids this past spring, and I have never grown orchid before! I learned everything about caring for orchid from your channel! However, one of them had crown rot and lost all leaves in a couple of month, so, regretfully, I tossed it into the city compost bin (I'm in Central Texas). Now another orchid also had crown rot. The 3 leaves look healthy but the stem below has turned black. I was thinking of tossing it out once it looks totally dead. Now, I will keep it this time to see what happen.

I've watched a few of your very informative videos and now I want to try to save it. It may be too far gone as I was doing EVERYTHING wrong LOL. It only have one leaf now and I'm sure the roots are rotted but I will try to save it. Now to check out your other videos:)

This was AHMAZING! The title made me look twice, the magic ingredient being patience really made me laugh. Been watching for years and this was so unexpected but like always accurate!! The way you explained the new crown was interesting, looking at it that way does that mean the keike can support and feed the old growth long term? Thats one thing I never considered....thanks!!!

I have an old phalaenopsis that ended up loosing all the roots within the pot but had loads of them above the medium. It dried out pretty severely but the above roots were still alive and the leaves were just very very wilted but not yet dead. I repotted it two days ago and can't yet tell if there is any uptake in water because the leaves are still quite wilted. I watered it again today and then watched this video. Good information to know. This orchid I'm trying to save from neglect has produced many flowers in the past as did another I have. I repotted that one too and the one wilted leaf is now back plump again ready to give more flowers. Im going to do before and after pictures of the one wilted one so I can do a before and after video down the road. I now know I won't use ice on the surface of the plant and I won't be afraid to water these. Your videos have helped me learn what I need to know to keep my babies alive. Ive lost too many over the years. Now Im confident I can keep more. Thank you. I have plenty of patience to go around.

Hi. I have been growing orchids for 5 years now. One orchid, recently was the same as you described, roots mostly on top and whilting leaves. I saw a video where they put some of the leaves (tips) resting in water and I put it in a plastic container with holes on the lid. ( Big round salad containers from the grocery store) That created a humid environment with the leaves just resting in some water. It worked and the orchid rehydrated itself and the leaves became firm again. I even put a little new moss around the exposed roots. I grow in bark and the bottom had lost many roots. Anyway, my nursing payed off and it now sprouted a new stem. Good luck!

Great explanations as usual. Just some more input: Apical dominance is controlled by auxine and cytokines. Auxine is produced mainly at the top of the shoot (the apex) and is responsible for apical dominance. Once the upper part of a plant is destroyed/hurt the ratio of these to plant hormones/phytohormones changes and the effects of cytokine that induces cell proliferation (growth) in axillary buds dominates and results in the growth of basal keikis to replace the crown

Hi Dani, thanks so much for these words of encouragement regarding patience with sick orchids! I am relatively new to orchids and have a dendrobium Nobile type that has been struggling root wise since I repotted beginning of the year (I think it was a combination of low light and overwatering/large pot size). I have reported it now into a smaller pot with plenty of ventilation, and placed it under Barrina grow lights (on your recommendation!). My question is- do you think it's okay to keep it in the bark &Coco peat mix it is in or should I try switching to a moss and bark mix? I changed the medium when repotting but kept it the same type as it came in as I didn't want to stress it more..now I'm wondering if I made a mistake!? Thanks for your input, your channel has been a life saver!
@erelyful
@erelyful Жыл бұрын
Regarding your potting mix, it depends how fast your medium does, if it dries in a week it’s good, if it stays wet for up to two weeks change it to something less water retentive

Mine got sick from the bottom up in the center, and they looked perfectly healthy until suddenly they weren't. I know it wasn't crown rot because there was never any water in the top center. This type of rot started from the roots but inside the crown.

if you cut a Phalaenopsis in half and add 3-indolbutiric acid in the wound of the apex and the base, the apex will start growing roots and the base will grow a new crown (like the orchid in your video), this method you are showing works to propagate Phalaenopsis homemade without lab material or any complicated stuff, you should give it a try it could be a great video i have a tutorial but it is in spanish.

Hello Dani. I have an orchid which has three different shoots coming off of two old flower stems that I didn't remove. They're most likely more flowers but I was wondering if you have a video on identifying these new growths and should I remove any to make others stronger? How long should I wait? I live in the Pacific Northwest and have dozens of Phals, many “ rescue “ plants. The primary problem I have is root rotting and dehydrated leaves. I use sphagnum moss and bark chips as media, and wonder if our lower temps h under 70 degrees F contributes to this problem. I have also used 100% bark chips and end up with dehydrated leaves. Any suggestions?
