Agreed. It seems like most channels that cover police body camera footage, etc always have a pro- or anti- police view. Even when a citizen might not deserve to be treated correctly because he treats no-one else correctly. This guy is the type of guy I"d expect to see a story covered on a channel like Ripe rather then an AtA double feature. Still, AtA does generally give fair coverage, even if he is sometimes more critical of cops then they deserve and more lenient to badly behaving suspects then they deserve. Still, all officers involved in this episode went way above and beyond the call of duty to be respectful to a man who had earned none. That's the mark of good people, treating all others with respect, even when not warranted. Even when having to enforce the rules that person keeps breaking.
@Orrinn1232 ай бұрын
Exactly. And it often seems that way because most videos are of bad cops but that’s purely because footage of good cops performing their job well is often not noteworthy or entertaining but sometimes we get good ones like this
@z3ntropy2 ай бұрын
It's interesting to consider why body cam channels and their hosts both seem and; for the most part, are anti cop. A good reason is nobody talks about good cop interactions, nobody calls for body cam footage of a good police interaction, or are investigated as such. I personally hate cops but bad cop footage is the essentially only footage, not a lot of the contrary
@foogod42372 ай бұрын
Actually, I think one of the most telling points of the whole ordeal in the second story was when they were in the cell, and one of the officers pulled out his tazer and pointed it at him and then *did not actually use it.* Lots of officers, by the time they get to the point of pulling out a tazer, are determined to use it whether they actually need to or not "just to teach him a lesson", etc. This was actually a _correct_ use of the device, even when they pulled it out because they thought they it might be necessary, they still warned him and held off using it until they could be sure it was really necessary, and it turned out that he calmed down enough that it wasn't actually needed, so they never _actually_ pulled the trigger. It's nice to see some cops able to act in a cool, responsible, rational manner after pulling a weapon on someone. Far too often nowadays all we see are the other kind...

I train with a lot of LEOs who I know are great people, but I think they are institutional problems that need to be addressed.

If you watch other channels you'll see plenty of good cops out there. There seems to be two streams of police content on KZbin, those that cover police interactions negatively and the others that view the suspect negatively. This channel is really an audit of that first stream, so if this is all you watch all you will see are the bad cops. But policing is a very tough job and there are a lot of good cops out there who often risk their lives protecting the community. Both the good and the bad need to be exposed. Honestly, if you watch a body cam channel like Police Activity that just posts unedited body cam footage, most cops are just trying to do their jobs and do the right thing. I'm glad this channel finally covered the other side of the story.

I tried apologizing, but she spoke Spanish, so I grabbed my friend and pulled her out. She was so sure she did nothing wrong, she refused to leave, wanting to tell the police her side. She didn't care that she had a warrant, because in her mind, she was right. The police were understanding of why she grabbed at the purse, but not about the warrant. What would an officer with an average level of patience done differently? He cuffed him right away in the bar, immediately responded to his threat with 'that's a felony charge,' and later they wound up tasing him even though he was in a cell surrounded by officers. Since his vehicle is going to be towed, an inventory search of the vehicle is allowed. I’m skeptical of a dog’s reliability when sniffing outside a car. I was a passenger during a traffic stop in Texas several years ago, riding with the three other friends, none of which had any sort of substances on them ever. The cops said the dog alerted to something in the car. They searched the car and found nothing because there was nothing. I think sometimes dogs alert just to get the praise, even if they are trained to identify certain scents. Edit: I’ll add one more thing. You also have the possibility that an officer misinterprets the dog’s signal, OR they just bring the dog out, it doesn’t signal, but the cop just says it signaled, and puts that lie in the report, and the driver is none the wiser.

@@ddmn369j2 I think in this case specifically, the only difference that a normal citizen would have experienced is that they would have been questioned and detained while said questioning was going on. Once the fact that Mr. O'Shea had aggressively walked up to the vehicle with a concealed hand on two occasions, the officers would likely have focused all attention on him, and once the meth pipe was found it would've been all over for him no matter what. Let's also not forget that officers attempted to pull over Mr. O'Shea before the initial detainment and arrest, which likely caused the incident to become escalated to where it was in the video as well. Even if a normal citizen had been the one to point a gun at him, doing if the rest of the interaction went the same as it did in this video, the outcome would've been the same regardless. The other citizen would likely have been detained for a period of time, and questioned, possibly requested to turn over their firearm for the period of time that the investigation was going on, or possibly longer if they felt it was relevant to everything else going on, but since no shots were fired, and there was just cause for taking a defense against Mr. O'Shea, they likely wouldn't have had anything major happen to them as long as they cooperated. Of course, if they didn't cooperate, or were belligerent like Mr. O'Shea, then things could have taken a VERY different turn with a citizen than the off duty officer. But that's true for any stop or interaction that involves a firearm not used by officers, and as we've seen on this channel before, even true for interactions with firearms USED by officers.

I watched the police beat the bag out of a friend of mine years ago because he was being disrespectful. He was! Absolutely being disrespectful and he was already cuffed. I watched three cops beat him down and laid boots to him. He ended up receiving an assault on a police officer charge and it was his word against the cops and no way to prove otherwise. i would say that their logic of the cop being justified in self-defense was not based on any true knowledge they had but was rather them just excusing the officer's use of the gun. they had no rational basis to know that it was a fact that this methhead had left his car and approached the off-duty cop in traffic twice with a hidden hand and causing him to fear for his life, and before they even spoke to the off-duty about it or knew that it was in fact his gun that was involved, they had already declared that he was justified because they took his word (from the off-duty calling dispatch) over the methhead. the fact that he was justified isn't the point, it's that they were doing the blue-line gang shit before finding out that he was actually justified. the fact that they happened to be right doesn't make me go so far as to claim i'd side with THEM on this for those reasons. being on the side of the outcome doesn't require it.

@@dizzlebizzle8424 While I respect your desire to err on the side of the potentially mistreated, in this case there was more than adequate facts to create a basis for reasonable suspicion. I believe you missed some facts. The officers responding to the call about O'Shea were initially unaware that it was him that had also called 911 dispatch. When they attempted to signal him for a reasonable traffic stop (and it WAS reasonable; any reasonable officer would have done the same for a private citizen if they were in the area and dispatch alerted them to a tailing vehicle that the caller alleges broke traffic law to approach them in the intersection before tailing them), O'Shea failed to pull over and obstructed traffic while doing so. You are also operating under post facto knowledge; you know he is a belligerent, erratic addict, so you ascribe that belief to the cops who pulled him over and attack that belief. That was not the case here. The police are not required to have a reasonable BELIEF that someone that matches the description of an alleged offense actually did the thing to effectuate a stop, just a suspicion that would be reasonable under the known facts at the time. The cops knew someone was tailing somebody (fellow cop or no), they identified the alleged vehicle directly behind the person who called dispatch and following the turns said caller took, and when they tried to effectuate an investigative stop said vehicle's driver failed to follow traffic laws. Everything that followed was done by the book as was, it seems, what preceded. Whether or not other actions they have taken outside of these interactions remains to be seen, but in what we see here they could not be reasonably accused of doing gang-like behavior. I am not, in any way, pro-police and believe the entire institution is fundamentally flawed, but there is no denying the cops in this case (at least according to the footage and info here) did everything right within a margin of error any other exemplar of the current ethical standards of policing could be expected to follow.

I'm a retired police officer myself and was in a similar situation, I made a lane change, literally two car lengths in front of another vehicle, and the guy was very angry for that. He actually followed me into a parking lot in Virginia Beach and jumped out of a vehicle and raged, approaching my vehicle so I pulled away. He followed me down the road and at a traffic light where I couldn't go anywhere he jumped out again and came over angrily with his left hand and his pocket. Knowing the climate of road rage and how deadly it can be over another person's opposition to the way you might drive, I drew my firearm and had it pointed at my driver's door out of view from him. I don't blame the sergeant for what he did, because he did not know the man's intentions and normal, decent people usually don't instigate or provoke road rage like this. I was ready at that moment had he pointed a firearm at me, to defend myself and not give him the chance to shoot me. I'm not sure how much road rage is related to mental illness, narcissistic behavior or just bad people, but there's no way I'm going to let someone I don't know come up and harm me, my property, or even take my life. This is why I carry a small canister of law enforcement grade OC spray in my vehicle and if someone were to approach and attempt to get into my vehicle, the pepper spray which is considered non-lethal, should take care of the problem relatively quickly. And at that point I would be obligated to contact law enforcement and request medical so he can be/she decontaminated. Police grade pepper spray is widely available and legal in most states, and the minute you bring that can out and aiming at them, it de-escalates usually very quickly and they leave without incident.
