Do you have a NAS? If so, what kind of NAS are you using?

Great overall review of the TVS-h1288x. I also have the same NAS with the same 12tb drives minus the ssds as I currently don’t need them. I also upgraded the RAM to 2 32gb sticks but decided to leave it at 64gb and keep the original 8gb sticks as a backup just in case. Great NAS for media sharing/collaborating, VMs and of course Plex.

I have TVS-871 that acts as my backup server. it is also capable of saturating the 10gbe with SSD cache. my 1688 came with broadcom 10gbe. the fan died within a week and according to FLIR it was hitting 80-90C. I eventually made my own HSF. made a 50mm*100mm with a 40mm 0.1A 12v fan. and the temp hasnt exceeded 40C. those fanless NIC are meant for server rack casing with force feed airflow. not meant for casing like ours. I also upgrade my CPU to W1290 10core and changed all the rams to DDR4-3200. using liquid metal pro as the thermal paste seems to help keep temps in check.

that said I switched back to normal QTS. i have 96GB ram and 2x2TB SN750 SSD as cache. with 8x 16TB exos X18 with 4x 6Tb HGST drives. I could only do 850-950GB/s on the EXOS with SSD cache with QuTS. . but on QTS, I could do 1.15GB/s with SSD cache. that said with ZFS, scrubbing is 1.5hr but QTS is to 24hrs+. SSD cache also helps when pairing with channel bonding with 2 terminals with 10GbE. it is able to push out 1.8-1.9GB/s

What made you choose ZFS/Hero ? 1 reason I didn’t choose is because I don’t have 8 drives all at the same time yet. Just 4. So essentially by the time I’m ready I’ll have to most likely buy another equivalent NAS & start there & then transfer. Using TVS-872XT with 4 x 16TB Ironwolf pro drives. Returning my NVME SSDs today. Didn’t see any speed increase for my uses.
@SuprUsrStan
@SuprUsrStan 3 жыл бұрын
I prioritized the hardware more than ZFS. The 872XT is a solid NAS and QTS is perfect for most users. I was looking for a stronger processor and a few extra slots for SSDs. The 872XT has a 6 core clocked at 1.7Ghz that boosts up to 3.3Ghz and is only rated for 35W. The W-1250 on the other hand is a 3.3Ghz processor that boosts up to 4.7Ghz and is rated at 80W. I don't need the thunderbolt on the 872XT so the 1288X is more appropriate for me. QuTS Hero does have a slightly better throughput over QTS but it's not a make or break IMO. In line compression and deduplication is nice but is kinda wasted on me. Self healing healing of silent data corruption is also nice but I probably wouldn't notice either way. I see QuTS as a nice little perk for having a powerful NAS that can leverage the OS.

Hello Stan. Great review of the QNAP TVS-h1288X. I too, have the same NAS with two SSD drives for the OS and the Apps, four 10TB 7200 RPM Iron Wolf drives, and two 20TB Iron Wolf drives. Oh and I added two 32GB memory sticks. My question, that was not mentioned in the video, is --> what do you recommend/suggest for a GPU? Keep in mind that this is mainly used for Plex, to share within and outside the home. The video format is from 480p to 4k. Thank you and look forward to your response.

That’s not how parity works. In both raidz2 and RAID 6, parity data is striped across all drives, not just two. You just have two sets of parity data.

I understand about not being able to expand the pool drive size once it is made with ZFS, but can't you just make an additional pool and use that with your current pool of RAIDed drives? I currently have an older 8 bay system with just QTS, 4 drives in RAID 5, second poll 2 drives in RAID 1. And I use the last 2 bays for SSDs and use them in RAID 1 for SSD cache. I say all this for people that buy a 6 or 8 bay system but don't have data to fill them or money to buy all the drives at once, they can just add drives as needed and create additional polls with the new drives.

Yes but you will be splitting your performance capability across 2 pools versus using all drives to drive max performance through 1 pool.
@mj1s735
@mj1s735 3 жыл бұрын
@@almaq2078 I am sure that would be true especially if your a using a 10G network along with SSD caching? I know for a fact that with a 1G network it is not true.

This idea confuses me as I am new to Nas, and configuring Raid, Storage Pools, and Volumes. So if I wanted to expand or add on a different drive or type of drive, does that mean it has to be set up in the original set up of the NAS? I also read where some drives like sas and sata cant be raided together? Didnt realize there was so much planning in a NAS set up. Can someone clarify how to avoid set up pitfalls?

@@wildwillybilly I am new to QNAP also. So I watch a lot of the KZbin videos to help me figure things out. There are videos out there that explain what storage pools and volumes are. QNAP UK KZbin channel is a good place to start.

@@mj1s735 what’s not true? 1 pool with 8 drives vs 2 pools with 4 drives each? Or whatever number pools you want to create … 1 pool with all drives will out perform multiple pools with less drives.

Can you populate with different size drives or do they all have to be the same size drives?
@lennyaltamura2009
@lennyaltamura2009 2 жыл бұрын
You can do that with Synology SHR but not on QNAP. QNAP uses traditional RAID, which requires all same type of drives/same size. I don't think you can do different-size drives on Hero OS due to RAID-Z configuration: you lose the extra space on larger drives whose space is above the smaller ones. My understanding of it (I don't use ZFS yet) is that if you have 10 drives and 8 of them are 8TB and 2 of them are 10TB, you will lose 2TB right off the bat for each 10TB (4TB total space lost) drive to stripe across all 10 drives. It is recommended to use all same size for this reason with RAID-Z.

i wish i could afford something like that but at this point isn`t it cheaper to just ''make a older pc to a nas?''
@SuprUsrStan
@SuprUsrStan 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, FreeNAS now known as TrueNAS is the cheaper method if you want access to ZFS. I used to run FreeNAS for a few years back and it was fun and all to tinker with that platform and performance was great. However it was during a time when they were overhauling the OS and plugin system to docker and it broke a lot of my plugins. I'm not sure the state of TrueNAS but it's probably fixed by now. That tumultuous transition pushed me to QNAP for something a little more production stable and purpose built.

Can any of these NAS Media Server Programs play Movies that are compressed with RAR, etc? I’ve been wanting to sell/upgrade my drobo 4 + drobo 5n, and get a Synology or Qnap with Plex (or similar server side program) if it can do that. I have/had a dlink Boxee Box that worked awesome with my 2 drobo’s watching my compressed DVD/Blu-Ray collection until they nuked that. I don’t understand why they couldn’t of just let it continue without updates. If Plex does allow playing compressed ISO’s forgive my ignorance, it’s available on the drobo 5n2, not the older ones I have currently. I know I’m late to the Plex Party, but I’ve just been getting stuff on iTunes and putting off upgrading.

I suppose my question would be when setting up and hoping not to waste drive space and function. I was looking for more videos or anecdotal stories of trial and error pitfalls that people found to be best practices in situations where they wasted drive space for the raid/pool storage/ or value . . . or had to move data then delete it(and re setting up nas pools/volumes), by looking back after they set up when learning and gaining experience with missteps/underestimating storage setups. I was hoping the creator . .or anyone scanning video/this thread might chime if they see this thread. Do these types of videos exist?

As far as editing video goes you will never have enough storage space. So what do we do? Well, I archive all my projects on quad layer blu ray disc and most importantly I archive on video tape. I use hdv for a lot of my projects but I also use HDCAM. When I go to NAB or have a chance to talk to anyone at Sony, JVC, or Panasonic I stress this fact and I tell them we desperately need a 4 or 8k solution...

I missed that quts hero does not permit expanding pool by disk. lol, I had disconnected my annoying nic fan prior to seeing this video assuming mine was bad; qnap should take a look.

QNAP TS-1677x-1700-64g 550W (64TB-Hot), 2 Vols RAID6, 1 Vol RAID 0, 1 Vol RAID6 SSD Cache, (48TB-Warm (external Cadies)), I also added a 1092cuda-core NVidea card for Video-Bypass; currently focus it on system instead. It significantly increases the response of the machine., Synology 1819+ (16gbRAM)(8TB) 2Vols SHR2 with 512G file cache in RAID 1, Synology 1817+ (16gbRAM) 32TB 1Vol SHR2, I also tested Trunas on DELL R815s with ESXI platform, but not using this atm. I also have a QNAP 4 drive bay NAS for surveillance, but the motherboard died, and no warranty after a year. That is disappointing with QNAP & Synology. If there is something they should do better is with their Warranty policy. I'm hesitant to purchase another QNAP or Synology for that reason alone.

Good day! I need an expert opinion! We have a small film production. We have an office and 4 Mac Studio in it. We want to install a NAS in the studio so that we can edit from it IN PARALLEL on all 4 computers, accessing the same volumes/files from several editing stations at the same time. We plan to make a local 10G network. I want to buy QNAP TVS-h1688X-W1250-32G for this purpose. But some sellers in stores assure me that this is an amateur level device and it will not allow mounting simultaneously from several mounting stations, and advise me to buy QSAN XCubeNAS XN8012R which in my opinion will not justify its money because it has weaker characteristics (we also do not have a server rack now). What do you advise in this case? I want to find the best solution for my money and not let my fellow editors down so that they don't suffer from bugs later.

Anyone else disappointed that Plex has commercials even after paying their dumb a$#es? I think that does not apply to cough cough home videos that somehow got on my hard drive from the planet Usenet. Maybe I am the only person in the you inverse that has arrived at this moment stunned that I am still fighting to rid my screen of those Ad Execs wet dreams! Peace out, go in peace!
