This is 2022 version of Mount Akina for Assetto Corsa, and it may be the best version yet. It was created by Project Kaido, a modder whose main objective is total realism. His past efforts include the Gunsai Touge course, which looks exactly like the real thing. And, when comparing his still incomplete rendition of Akina to the real world, 2017 and EK versions, it's evident that this is the most realistic version to date.
Project Kaido has crammed this track with so much vegetation that it practically puts Microsoft Flight Simulator to shame - it’s almost unprecedented to see this many trees in assetto corsa without much of a perfoemance hit. The trees and plants aren't the shabby 2D ones we're used to seeing in Assetto Corsa either. These trees are true to life japanese pine and maple trees, placed as faithful to the real road as possible, with intense attention to detail to ensure you never see the same tree twice... without realising it. It’s this attention to detail that makes project kaido’s mods such a treat to check out. And, this level of quality carries on throughout.
Although, it would be inappropriate to compare the various bits and pieces of scenery on the Project Kaido version to it’s predecessors, as it’s still unfinished. However, we can get a broad idea of how the finished product will look from the portions that do feature full scenery. It’s obvious that Project Kaido is working from top to bottom. And, at the start of the touge, I’d say the scenery is close to completion, and my god, does it look good - it’s pretty much identical to what we can see on google maps.
I probably dont need to mention it agian, but he’s going for full immersion here. While the 2017 version does look complete, and somewhat realistic, it’s obviously looking extremely dated. In fact, I’m pretty sure it was ripped from a game that was at it’s peak way before 2017. And, as for the EK 2021 version, this was ripped from the Initial D arcade stage game, so it’s scenery is going for a more cartoon caricature vibe.
It’s still obviously Akina, and most of the corners remain identifieable. But, it has a totally different feel to previous versions. I think project kaido excellently blends beauty of EK Akina, as well as the trickiness in air quotations of Akina 2017.
To begin with, the road feels considerably more claustrophobic, it’s narrower , and you’re encapsulated by not only dense forest , but also guardrails and some rather steep enbankments. This make the drive more slightly more exhilerating, and improves the sensation of speed. More significantly however, it’s muuuch closer to real life. It gives off the vibe that you’re actually driving a road, on a mountain. Something that is remarkably difficult to mimic in a simulator, and only a few mods have pulled off.
Speaking of a sense of speed, the Project Kaido version of akina has a greater sense of verticality. In the previous editions, it almost seemed flat, which I know is a big complaint of most touge drivers. But on this one, there’s all these micro elevation changes. While the actual elevation data is presumeably the same, all the humps in the road domake the drive more engaging as opposed to the almost entirely flat, american highway style roads seen on EK Akina. Not only this, but they also sometimes cut off your line of sight down the road, like on this corner. Again, this helps the drive feel more dynamic, and plays into the claustrophiba component I mentioned earlier.
IF you’re a bit of a nerd like me, you’ll love the fact that the road isn’t consistent at all. It has minute bumps and uneven camber which can throw the car around a little bit when you’re at the limit. Speaking of which, the entire stretch of road is lined by guttering, and you can actually use them to your advantage to slingshot you around the corner. I like akina a lot, its where i started sim racing and where most people did. I wont say it isn't "boring" you say but I've spent hours just driving mindlessly hearing either eurobeat or very chill music with more than 10k km. Nanamagari is also fun af but whenever i got some free time i load akina 2017 with rkgaming's takumi's first stage ae86 and enjoy the drive. btw is crazy how only 21% of people is suscribed, you deserve better that that. exelent and entertaining videos as always

Fun fact: According to some rumors, some gutters at Akina in real life (Mt. Harunasan) has been destructed due to Initial D That’s why in real life there’s no gutters at U turns The government also add speed bumps near U turns to prevent street racing

Normal road racing is the biggest challenge for upcoming videogames. You don't need to pay licences, you don't have fancy publicity banner and you can literally come up with whatever road you want. But it's the most complicated, by far.

Real trees!??!?! That change alone is enough to put this mod among the better ones available. That is the single biggest barrier to immersion in AC and seeing modders finally tackle that issue should keep AC relevant for another few years. I love Akina! It's easy and a lot of fun to drive with friends, it makes for some easy battles. After EK Alina was released I couldn't get used to the changes, it felt very different and I didn't know how to drive it so I stopped driving in it. Now that I see a new version, I really want to try it! I hope Touge Life changes the map again for this new version.

Well, at least the long straits of Akina aren't as long as the eternal straits of Nanamagari. I struggle to learn the technical bits of Nanamagari because I get bored just trying to get to them, and then I fall asleep and forget that the straits actually do end eventually. Racing on Nanamagari is NOT as safe as riding in a long white tube with lots of little windows being hurled across an ocean at 35,000ft and 500+mph by a pair of turbo fans.

Hmmm, I might give this a try. Might, it looks interesting. But ultimately I'm not holding my breath as I've never enjoyed Akina. Also, unlike most touge junkies who like to do downhill. For some ungodly, heretical, arse backwards reason I seem to do better on the uphill.

@@Dominik189 For me in uphill, I find it easier to not under steer and I feel I have more control over my car. And it’s also easier to deal with weight balance (when most of the cars engine are in the front). In downhill it’s easy to accidentally speed up and do mistakes, you’ll have now 2 energy factors to deal with : your car/engin, and gravity. But in the end it’s just a personal matter ;)

I am fairly new to SIM racing and I just bought GT7. With a steering wheel it's a pretty awesome game. But since I drove my own car before I did any SIM racing I'm looking for the best drift realistic drift sim. Does Asetto Corsa feel more realistic than GT7? Because I think physics are pretty oke from GT7 but not perfect.

You make a valid point with the touge being boring and somewhat overrated the edition of the town is a nice idea though it’s probably just to put the tofu shop in (another reason the track is overrated) what I have always been interested in is the road at the the top that leads to the lake there are separate maps but not many people know/or care what lies beyond the start/finish line perhaps this will be added as part of the realism ?
