In fact he waited until spider-man was one step through and turned around for MJ's hand when Paul said it can only be opened for a few seconds then Grabbed MJ and shoved Peter through it and then the portal closed. He never planned on getting thru it and just said it so they (Spider-Man) can warn his own dimension of the threat to come and instead told MJ & Spider-Man that they could all leave the wannabe god trapped in the previous dimension. He was worried that if he told the truth then they might not agree with his plans. The problem is making a noble sacrifice while pulling someone else back to also try to, keep them safe? From the portal closing on them when there in an, effectively doorway and they wouldn't be high-fiving each other for 5 minutes before going thru if they would have known that they needed to just hurry and go thru. and instead of pushing someone an inch away from a doorway to save there life he chooses to something that to his knowledge, would be dooming them. TLDR: he never planned on leaving and planned a noble sacrifice but instead chose to celebrate for five minutes before leaving and instead of pushing the couple thru the Portal doorway, he pulled one back and shoved the other thru because he kept the secret about it being time sensitive and let them waste time celebrating instead of just leaving because poor writing or dude is a Incel-coded villain. but it's a self insert so I'm going with the first one.

In comparison, DC did something similar years before this with Batman, Catwoman and Wonder Woman. Batman and WW went to a different dimension to take over someone's place to defend Earth from armies of demons for a day. Not knowing that there's a time dilation, where 100 years = 1 day (I think). Catwoman (same as Spidey's situation) tries to get Gentle Man, the guy they're covering for, to bring her "MJ" (Batman) back. Batman and WW were stuck in the other dimension for almost 40 years. They had a moment where they were about to kiss, but MJ, sorry, Batman refused saying he still loves Selina. Imagine, Batman rejecting a beautiful demi goddess after spending 40 years with her, whereas MJ couldn't keep her legs closed after a few months with some normie named Paul.

I mean, they can be written well. They just need a REALLY good writer behind them. Like, what realistic struggles would a self insert of me, for example, have to face? Let's say my hypothetical self insert is a Court Jester themed luchador. His girlfriend, the daughter of a fictional Texas governor and former luchador, gets addicted to drugs, hooks up with the drug kingpin, gets cleaned, gives birth to kingpin's baby (he's dead at this point after snorting anthrax thinking it was cocaine), relapses, and is found dead in her living room from an overdose. Our hypothetical self insert obtains custody of her daughter, but is later challenged by the brother of the kingpin, a drug lord himself, for those rights. So noe our hero's battles have moved from the streets, to the court room. And this is just the third arc of the series! I got the whole series plotted out, but I won't waste your time explaining the rest. Point being, in the hands of a good writer, a self insert could be written well. If your self insert is just there to screw over the main character you were hired to write for, and act as your wet dream power fantasy, then yeah, people are gonna want to see you wedgied by flag pole.

At this point, MJ is for the streets. When I saw Jackpot in the Venom War comic where Spidey gets back together with Venom... I couldnt help but realize that Venom and Peter have a better relationship than any other relationship Peter has had in his personal life since Gwen! The only good relationship that Peter even has left is Aunt May and JJJ. I think Pete is better off making a superhero team or group with Venom, Doctor Octavius, Wolverine, occasional chapters with Johnney Storm and some chapters with Kraven, Sandman, and etc. Just like a unique take of Spidey's story where he focuses all his attention on his Spidey life, and ends up reforming his villains!

I hate luck based powers in stories. Because they effectively boil down to “whatever the plot needs”. Need the hero to lose a fight “oh bad luck”, need them to dominate a fight “what a coincidence best power ever”. Now yes, technically every power only does what the story needs them to, but there is a difference between the writer coming up with interesting applications of a pre-existing mechanic, and literally things happening just because. It’s a top 3 shitty powers to write that will rarely be satisfying alongside “power negation”. Which is bad for different reasons.

The entire concept sounds cool but if you really think about it, it's incredibly fucking stupid, what kind of nutjob has the ability to create tech that can emulate the abilities of EVERY marvel character then chooses to make the ability choice RANDOM. It's incredibly stupid, and it's basically supposed to be a "hypothetical" drawback she can't control but since this is fiction she will always technically have the abilities necessary to overcome the situation so her abilities aren't actually random and are instead a lazy writer's method of creating perpetual plot armor.
