About whether the infected still have some sort of consciousness left: According to infos you can find in the games, in the first stage of infection (the Runners) people still are somewhat alive but the fungus took over control of the body. Some infected manage to keep to some sense of consciousness though. For example, some Runners just stand around and only react to the player if they're directly in front of them (instead of walking around like most other infected, which implies that they have some control left). Early in the first game you can hear a woman cry while she attacks and eats a human, so she seems to be aware of what she is doing but just can't stop it. But on the other stages of the infection every last bit of humanity is gone and only the fungus is left.

That moment you realize Frank decided he was ready to die when he could no longer paint Bill. I know most people are struck by how sad Bill & Frank's story is, but to me I was stunned at how beautiful their life was. We all die eventually and Frank's illness didn't have a cure even before the outbreak, so that wouldn't have changed anything. @@KevinReactsTV I agree with all that you praise, just wish they’d used something newer, or less familiar, for the climactic B&F scene music-wise. I’m a big fan of Max Richter, but “On the Nature of Daylight” has been used so extensively throughout cinema and television, while certainly effective, it was somewhat a distraction, conjuring visions of climactic scenes of other favorites like Arrival. The Richter piece was said to be used by the director as “temp music” early in production, with the intention of replacing it with something else.

I think Frank knew earlier than that. I think he knew when he was invited in, when Bill provided fresh clothing, with the dinner served just so, on good plates with charger plates underneath and crystal wine glasses...and the exact right wine. This wasn't just for Frank, we'd already seen that this is what Bill does , and it's not what you'd expect from a guy with a Gadsden flag and an arsenal in the basement. Frank's gaydar went to 11 on all that. The only inconsistency was the dust on the breakfront.
@EV-wp1fj Жыл бұрын
@@jillcnc Great analysis. Also the "I know I don't seem the type" line was pretty self-aware. Bill probably knew he was gay, but never acted on those feelings because of his overdeveloped sense of pragmatism. In a way, the apocalypse and the loneliness and Frank showing up out of nowhere gave him full permission to finally just be himself and he embraced it.

Bill standing in the middle of the street, firing back at the raiders, is a metaphor for his love for Frank. HIs job, as Bill sees it, is to put himself between Frank and danger. I like to think that so many of the reactions to this episode come from people seeing love the way it really is -- that which unites us and gives us a common bond, a shared human experience. And that the foundation of love is not gender or genitalia but is instead simply the way we treat each other, what we give to each other and the world.

Couldn't agree more! Love is about the connection and finding your person! The positive reactions to this episode overall have been really great to see!

I don't do well with flying. I am quite terrified of it, actually. But I do it because if I want to travel from Montreal to... anywhere worthwhile, I have to take planes. I just came back from a trip to Florida and we were having some turbulences and the only thing I could think about, over and over again, is the conversation between Joel and Ellie. "Dude, you got to go up in the SKY!" and then Joel looking at the downed plane "Yeah well, so did they" Thanks, show, for making me even more scared of flying...
@KevinReactsTV Жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear about that, makes things more difficult for sure. Turbulence is the worst, haven't flown in a while but it always gets me when I do.

I love your reaction style. Subscribed. Also, yeah man this one was rough for me. Going in I knew the characters were together in the game, so I knew immediately what was going to happen to Frank. But the changes the show made, focusing SO MUCH on character development in one episode, and then finishing it in such a beautiful way... yeah. I cried like 3 times this episode, and one of those times was nearly ugly sobbing. What an amazing piece of television, this episode alone is better than most shows I've watched. We are currently on episode 5, going into episode 6 and this is still my favorite episode so far.

Thank you for watching, I'm glad you enjoyed it! I had no idea what to expect since I haven't played the game, I was not ready to be brought to such an emotional place. Nick and Murray gave top tier performances, just incredibly nuanced and subtle but honest. Their ending was beautiful and I wouldn't change it, but it sure would be good to get a little more of them, especially interacting with Ellie.

You're absolutely right--i can't remember another piece of TV that's impacted me this hard. As with Lord of the Rings, To kill a mockingbird, and JoJo Rabbit, i'm going to think about this episode every now and then for the rest of my life. it's a magnificent blend of beauty, humor and heartbreak. The best art shows how and why life is precious even in moments of deepest grief.

The only major fungi infection in history from the food supply which caused people to go crazy and violent that I am aware of (1951, France) ended up giving the infected people hallucinations, which is why they did what they did. One guy jumped out of a high window cause he thought he was an airplane, one guy tried to drown himself because he thought he had snakes in his belly, and one kid tried to strangle his/her grandmother (don't know the details beyond that). It seems in each case they were conscious, but living in an alternate reality. So maybe that's what's going on with these cordyceps infections in the show/game.
@KevinReactsTV Жыл бұрын
Oh dang, that sounds crazy! That would be better I guess, for them at least. Hopefully that's the case although I doubt we'll find out this season if at all.

They have consciousness up to the point when they're running all crazy like in the beginning. In the game they talk about how sometimes you can still hear them crying or asking to be killed while running after someone. Eventually they're too broken mentally so they're essentially brain dead as the mushroom eats away parts of their brains. But there's always a chance they're somewhat... aware..

I think consciousness leaves very quickly given what we saw of Tess in episode 2. I think that the fact she let the stalker put the fungus in her mouth shows that she had very little control left, and it was mere hours after she was bit. I think what tiny bit fo humanity was still present in her she used to light the lighter.

My husband is Bill and I’m Frank. The ONLY difference in when the raiders attacked, mine would have had a plan in place for any situation. I would know exactly what to do in a situation like that because” Bill” would have told me what my role was. I would have been popping them all from a window somewhere. I’ve never seen a story like this on television EVER. I get sick hearing about people wanting representation, but WOW! This finally feels like being seen.

It makes me so happy that you felt seen in this episode. Bill and Frank's story was absolutely beautiful. I was surprised that Bill was just standing out in the middle of the street exposed.
