My grandparents have a small farm and when I was at university I stayed with them a lot. I helped look after the chickens and other animals. The younger cockerels used to roam around the farm in their own little gang to avoid getting pecked by the older birds. One of the cockerels from this group took a shine to me for some reason. Whenever he spotted me wandering around he would fly up onto my shoulder and crow in my ear, he would then sit there as I bumbled around, feeding the sheep and changing the water. He would sort of waggle around and lean against my head to stay balanced. Sometimes I would lay on the grass under the ornamental cherry tree and he would rock up with his friends and they would all sit around while he would settle down right next to my head and preen my hair. It was thoroughly surreal but wonderful at the same time. I loved that daft little bugger and I miss him!

They are surprising. I once had a young pullet given to me that was being ushered out of some university study program and raised her around our house. She had a great personality and eventually laid us batches of eggs. Sad story was that she was mauled to death by a band of roving neighborhood dogs a couple years later. Me and my wife gravitated to even more unusual pets in the following years and discovered opossums and snapping turtles also quite surprising in positive ways as pets.

I am so close to bringing my chicken into the house and making her a temporary resident for the winter. I already did bring her in, twice, and she was chill with it. My mom thought it was silly and it was, but after our other hen died, she's just been alone for at least two months and I felt bad for her and brought her in so give her come company. The second time I brought her in I played some soothing music and petted her and she kinda laid down in the cat bed the cats never used and sort of fell asleep. Also apparently chickens purr, too, because she did that when I was petting her. **Before anymore people come to me telling me to quit slowly killing my chickens, our current hen does NOT lay any eggs, and I am not certain if she had or not because we got her from a guy who had given us two hens. One died from starvation, even when we tried to give her as much food as possible, and no we were not purposely starving our chickens. She was already lighter than the other when we got them both. The other is fine and is the normal weight a chicken should be and is eating well.** Ya'll convinced me and my mom to make our chicken a house chicken now.
@tyblob90596 жыл бұрын
That was out of nowhere, but even if she still laid eggs why are you telling me to stop "stealing" them?
@MaynardsSpaceship6 жыл бұрын
@@tyblob9059 There's a lot of info out there on what happens when eggs are removed from hens - they produce more, which they are only really supposed to produce something like 12 a year; it takes a toll on their bodies just like a human woman who keeps having babies. And really, they are here not our eggs to take (we like to think everything is ours - common human fault) and we don't really have a use for them, as I haven't eaten an egg in 5 years or so.
@tyblob90596 жыл бұрын
Our current hen doesn't lay eggs anyway, so I am not shortening her life span. I'm not even sure if she laid any eggs before we got her since we got her from another guy who was willing to give us hens. So if she hadn't laid any eggs before, she has a ways to go.
@odissidance156 жыл бұрын
Bring her in. From what you say she is happy indoors with you. Chickens aren't solitary birds.
@tyblob90596 жыл бұрын
@odissi dance I may do that and I may have to convince my mom. She's used to being outside and in a pen that she doesn't know how to be in a house, although I'm not sure if she can because her vision is going bad and she may walk in front of us, fall down the stairs, or find herself someplace she shouldn't be in. It's those I'm most worried about, and I can't keep her upstairs either because there's plenty of hazards up here like our cords she may peck at, the stairs like I mentioned, the dogs who may accidentally step on her and quite a few things, although she has managed to climb on top of the wagon outside with no problem. If I can get her to stay in the cat bed, then she should be fine. Another thing I'm unsure about is when she has to go potty. We don't have the right thing for her to catch any droppings yet.

If u cant teach ur animals to go do ther stuff out then dont bring them in.
