It's shocking to think this is the first large Great Lakes vessel since 1981. When I was a child, the Detroit River was the busiest waterway in the world.

I've been on the Detroit River for many years and seen quite a few groundings. Outside of the channels it gets shallow fast.

The Mark Barker sounds a lot like "McBarker"- Mr Magoo's dog. Who was steering the ship? Magoo, you've done it again!

Wow! I had not heard about this but, I don't live in the Detroit area anymore having moved upstate. If you had to ground a ship, the north side of Belle Isle would be a good choice. It's not rocky there at all. It catches a lot of silt sent down river from Lake St. Clair. I am looking forward to your next video!

Was lucky for the ship that it headed in that direction after the power loss.

The fact that all it's technologies are new is probably why it lost power. Maybe the tier exhaust gas treatment system malfunctioned. Maybe one of the 18,000 engine sensors malfunctioned. Our push for green solutions has drastically degraded reliability of new diesels.

The problem will likely turn out to be rather unexciting. Like other modern modes of transport, this ship has countless fly-by-wire technologies and I suspect something in the controls, etc., had a "relatively" minor failure causing loss of navigation or engine control.

Loss of power? It makes me wonder what kind of emissions are on the engine, big diesels seem to suffer a lot from these issues, even to the point that a little $5.00 hose will cause a loss of power, and it can look perfectly fine, a semi I drove had such an issue and the dealer would reset the computer and I would drive about 100 miles and it would derate, it cost me more then $2000.00 to find that a little rubber hose that looked fine that cost $5.00 was the problem pluse many hours setting in a shop.

I wonder why they didn't use the bow thrusters to keep the boat offshore until a tug could reach them? Maybe they were out as well?

Hate to see it. On the bright side, there was no damage, no environmental damage, and traffic was able to sail through with zero issues. So, overall, not the worst grounding in the world. Although it is kind of embarassing to Interlake considering thats their second boat to ground this year.

Being new I'm not surprised it failed. It will be chock-a-block full of computers and electronics integrated by carpet baggers with long promises and no experience or understanding. Just like new cars and trains. (Hey Amtrak! How is that computerized Siemens stuff working out?)
