Great Big Story

Nat Puff is a singer/songwriter with an incredible range. A trans woman, she sings in both her lower and higher registers. Puff, who also goes by the stage name Left at London, makes it sound so easy. But it took this Seattle pop artist two years of training to achieve this level of vocal control. Accessing her full range allows Puff to create beautiful harmonies. But tapping into all her voice can do is about more than music-it’s also about self-acceptance.

I remember listening to Fast Car by Tracy Chapman for the first time in my friends car way back when. I absolutely thought it was a guy singing. And then my friend corrected me and told me this song was sung by a woman. And I didn't believe it at first. And he showed me the CD and I was like "WOW". A beautiful voice, masculine or feminine can belong to anyone. There's a couple of today's male singers who have a feminine tone like Rhye and Cigarrets After Sex.

YakovTheAnimeGirl You’re mixing up biology and phycology. My stepmum is the chair of the board of phycology at the university in my town, and she has two trans children, me and my stepsister. Someone can be biologically male/female/neither (intersex), and still stray from that mentally. Dysphoria (body and gender dysphoria, that is) exists, and it can be really mentally devastating. The best solution for that, as has been proven, is by gender affirming therapy, transition, and basic respect for pronouns. It’s not that hard to save a life, and I mean that literally, as the trans suicide rate is alarmingly high because of bullying and ignorance, and the idea that this can be “cured” or that it’s fake, a phase, something that will be gotten over. If a literal doctor of phycology can get behind respecting trans people, I think you can, unless you suddenly have a doctorate as well and/or have lived with dysphoria, I don’t think you can talk to me about biology OR phycology.

I can hit a B0 growl note on a good day, and an F#6 on an even better day. Not that uncommon in professional classical basses to be able to sing real high and real low, and hell, countertenors often get alto parts in Bach and whatnot. What's actually really impressive is that she's been able to shift her vocal centre up so high, while maintaining a conversational standard tonality.

TyrranicalT-Rad yeah, kinda, I guess? I would imagine this is a little different. First, being trans kinda blows. So overcoming the social and emotional obstacles enough to go full force into putting yourself out there as an artist is definitely admirable. Plus, if you’re taking hormone medication, you’re body changes. Singing is a very physical thing, more so than other music making because you *are* the instrument. So, having your body change after you’ve gotten used to using all the precise little quirks of your voice is probably pretty frustrating and difficult. Especially if you want to not just gain control of your new voice, but retain your old one.

Michael Bankart Pretty much everyone can practice their vocal chords to do whatever they want with it. No matter your gender, it just need practice.

Transgender people are biologically and thus physically male or female. Being able to hit low notes when you are biologically physically a man is not impressive. Hell if I wore a wig and acted like a girl, would it be impressive if I sung low notes?

Starshot Starshot HEY it’s you again, I love how you’re spending all this time replying to every comment and going out of your way to be just generally rude. Very inspiring. Don’t cut yourself on that edge! Nevermind that often transgender people take medication and training that physically alters your voice. So gaining the ability to control your new voice, while still retaining tight control of your previous, is difficult. Catch ya in the next one! ;D
