I’m a middle school teacher and whenever a student says something mean or offensive and then says “it was just a joke” or “I was just kidding” I literally ask them “what was the joke?” I really press them to explain it to me. This sometimes helps them realize that it’s not really funny or that it’s inappropriate.

This is so similar to the whole “edgelord” persona of the mid 2000’s and the shock-jock radio personalities of the 90’s before them. It’s like every generation believes they’re the first ones to think, “What if I just said really horrible stuff? And then said it was joke? And told anyone who said, ‘No, jokes are funny or clever in some way,’ that they just weren’t cool enough to get the joke? Then everyone will think I’m cool.”

What's even scarier about this trend is the thought process which led to this unpleasant joke. It's hard to believe that some random person was just chilling on their couch and suddenly it came to their minds that it'd be a good idea to start a trend that basically mocks domestic violence. We don't really know at what point this isn't just another harmful joke coming from teenagers but actually manifestation of their nasty intentions. My parents did the same thing when my brother and I were growing up. We're in our late 20s and early 30s now so they obviously had a lot less to be worried about compared to today's internet but still they were very on top of it. The computer was in an open area,when Myspace/Facebook became a thing we had to give our passwords and we didn't get phones til we were 15/16. But we didn't have smart phones obviously so there wasn't really anything to police there. I'm glad though now looking back as an adult that our parents took our cyber safety as seriously as our physical safety. I truly can't imagine what parents have to go through now a days with what the Internet and social media has become! I'm an adult and see stuff that horrifies me so to know CHILDREN are seeing it is just 😱. I'm honestly so glad I didn't grow up in this generation where the Internet and technology has become so prevalent and toxic!!

Oh my god, my son has always had, what we call 'What if' scenerios / questions . Usually answering whatever horrific scenerio within it. Pretty much like these, but instead of him start it with "Imagine" it was "What if". Our answer was always "thats what will happen"

Thanks Jamie. I appreciate you talking about this. Some things on TikTok are incredibly problematic. Also, this is something that everyone does in their head. It's called "intrusive thoughts." For example, let's say you are driving and you think "what if I drive into oncoming traffic." Another one is you're chopping an onion and you think to yourself "what if I just stab my hand." But the thing is WE DON'T SAY THEM OUT LOUD.

@@JackOllie4 I have gotten some help, thank you for your concern. Look up intrusive thoughts. My therapist says it's completely normal to have them. Everyone has them at some point or another, we just don't say them out loud or act on them.
@sarahdoe9653
@sarahdoe9653 2 жыл бұрын
I know plenty of people that have thoughts like this 🤷‍♀️ for the record, sometimes an intrusive thought can be saying something like "get some help" to someone who they don't even know personally on the internet, and maybe there's a teachable moment here on not acting on those thoughts.
@gracemcclain1471
@gracemcclain1471 2 жыл бұрын
@JackOllie4 It definitely is normal. That's why they're INTRUSIVE. If the thoughts continue daily and become a focal point in your thinking then they're a problem and that'd be when you'd need "some damn help". People with mental health issues have to be cautious with intrusive thoughts and impulsiveness.
@amelieg246
@amelieg246 2 жыл бұрын
@@JackOllie4 On top of what everyone else is saying, it's also pretty common for people with ADHD/Autism and other learning difficulties to have intrusive thoughts. They're not thoughts we want to act on, but just come into our head like 'I could go touch that high voltage cable over there and I'd die,' but I'm not ever going to actually do something like that. Just my brain likes to play out every scenario for each situation.

I think the difference is that these are intentionally sadistic? And are always about torturing or killing a date. They’re clearly not all intrusive thoughts. Also if you’re constantly having violent fantasies that can be legit grounds for getting sectioned to protect yourself and others.

With the horrific violence happening in schools across the country, I cannot fathom how these teens can justify these types of “joking” posts. Jaime, I feel like I'm literally one of the only teens on this planet who has never had or ever will have tiktok. From the beginning it just seemed so stupid and dangerous. Thank you for speaking out against things like this because it is so wrong. People are so stupid nowadays and have become so desensitized that they can't even see how wrong these things are. All they care about is how many views or likes they'll get for it. It's so sad that this is how my generation is viewed too. Viewed as dumb shallow teens. It's so frustrating. Keep standing for good morals, Jaime. There are few who do.

I have crippling anxiety and more often than not, I resort to nervous laughter/dark humour to cope with the crap that's happened in my life. My mom and cat died last year and at the funeral, I was the only one cracking up silly jokes in order to cope with the unbearable pain I was feeling. The jokes were dark but none of them were mean or tacky, I'm actually a very respectful person. That whole ordeal made me realize that you can keep that type of comedy within reasonable boundaries, and anyone who says otherwise shouldn't be making those jokes in the first place; they don't have the range.

This stuff makes me so unbelievably infuriated. Our society gorges itself on social media that doesn't even attempt to hide the fact it promotes violence and danger with literal children as their target. The audacity to think that people can constantly consume damaging and violent media and not be affected by it, that they can see the attention and fame it gets you to then not promote and act on those ideas?? It's ludacris. I'm also so mad that these platforms punish the people trying to stop these dangerous trends. That the people trying to tell the impressionable youth consuming this garbage that, "hey maybe you shouldn't threaten to rape and murder people?" are the ones that need to be silenced. It's becoming more and more common for these platforms. It's a different example, but another content creator that I follow is Ann Reardon from How to Cook That. She did a video warning about the dangers of fractal wood burning, a trend that has literally killed over 30 people in the US alone, and that video was taken down by KZbin. The many videos showing how to do the trend though, those got to stay.
@BurgerwithPeanutButter
