Good story for us consumers. I own a 2010 LX570, a 1999 BMW 528iT, 2003 BMW 530i and new 2001 BMW 330i M Sport. The only one that requires an extended warranty is the LEXUS which is just a Landcruiser with air suspension. So, it's air suspension was replaced after 6 years, waterpump, navigation screen went black, $6K, warranty covers half. Now, drive shaft leak, crank case leak, cylinder head gasket leak. Together, $9K. No radiator issues yet. 220,000 miles. The 1999 BMW has only regular maintenance and 263,000 miles. I bought it when it was 4 years old so I have owned it for 21 years. Smooth, quiet, 24 mpg. None of my BMWs leak. Oil changes every 6 months. All my vehicles are a pleasure to drive yet different in their own way. Each was my dream car at the time. If I had to sell the LX570, I'm the type that would trade it for a modified Landcruiser with an LS3, 1994 body style. At least their sunroofs didn't leak!

Just my opinion… Land Cruisers are one of the most reliable and well traveled vehicles ever made. Third-party warranty companies suck. Dump them if you can and see if they will pay you back the remaining of the contract that you haven’t used. Factory batteries in new Toyotas are not the best in my experience. Over the years, they have replaced my original battery within the first three years under the 3 year/ 36,000 mile warranty so being that this Land Cruiser is a 2021, I’m not surprised. Going forward, that battery should last you longer than the original. Maybe I missed it but if your sunroof is not leaking then why is your airbag harness rusted? I would ask Toyota. There has to be another reason. My understanding with Toyota is safety items like seatbelts, airbags, etc. are covered under a much longer warranty then the traditional bumper-to-bumper 3 year/ 36000. If you’re not getting the results that you want from one dealership, go to another.

Ben, I have a 2019 LC, There is NO WAY a 2020 or 2021 has rust issues that would affect electrical components. Utah is too dry and you’d have to immerse a vehicle in a brine solution to develop issues that quickly!! That is just too new and with such low miles!!! Something else is going on: rodents chewing wiring harness (covered up with cologne smell??) or some aftermarket electrical component installation shenanigans. Possibly faulty battery issues caused computer faults? Ben do more investigating , find a better shop. This doesn’t sound right. There probably needs to be computer/fault resets to clear faults caused by low battery…. This dealer solution sounds fishy!! KEEP INVESTIGATING THE CAUSE… and if it really is rust (which I doubt) get you local news consumer protection guy on it, any rust issues should be fully covered by manufacturers warranty…and certainly extended warranty. KEEP PUSHING brother!

Ben, I'm also in SLC and have a 2016 200 series. Looking back at my service history (I'm the second owner), right at around the 8700 mile mark, my vehicle had a similar issue...a consistent air bag light. Turned out to be a short circuit, behind the headliner, ( B1835) was the code pulled and the notes indicated, the dealership did this at the time at no cost to the customer. I know it might be hard to see any good news when issues like this arise , but I have around 110k miles now on my '16 and I haven't had any major issues. I had over 230k miles on my '08 and no major issues. I would absolutely try and find a Toyota dealer in the SLC area that will repair this for you under warranty...especially since yours is a '21.

I had a blinking push button start on a pre-owned car I had. The button was replaced and key fobs reprogrammed. 24 hours after I got my car back, the issue returned. Clearing the code and taking it for a drive is step 1. It doesn't cost a lot of money to professionally verify if you have a damaged wiring harness, it just costs a lot to replace it, so pay for a diagnosis instead of throwing your wallet at the issue. The first thing you should do is buy a scan tool and clear the airbag light and take it for a drive to see if the light comes back on. If this LC uses OBD2 scanners then it will be hilariously cheap and easy to find an OBD2 scanner and do this yourself. Step 2 if that doesn't work and you think it's a bad battery, you don't have to go buy a new battery just for diagnostic purposes; you can take the 12V out of your wife's car and put it in the LC and put the battery from the LC in your wifes car to see if it's a bad battery. I would have tried both of these within 15 minutes of having the issue. Assuming it is a wiring harness issue with no evidence before even attempting easy fixes you can do in your driveway is absolutely crazy.

I was a bit shocked at seeing this video as so many respected channels on KZbin praise this vehicle - in doing a bit more research on this I found that Toyota did put in drain channels below the sunroof to drain away any water that might get through the roof itself - those channels can get clogged and do over time, but what is surprising it that it occurred in a 2021 model, which is fairly new. It’s quite possible that this vehicle was left outdoors in a very dirty environment (leaves, other debris) for an extended period and was not washed, so this debris was able to seep in and clog the drain channels relatively quickly during rainstorms, which resulted in the water seeping onto the car body and corroding the wiring. Many dealers check for this issue when bringing the car in for service and clean the channels prior to a problem forming, as part of regular maintenance. It’s obvious this car was not treated well by the previous owner and Ben is now experiencing the pitfalls of buying cars unseen.

not sure I missed it but whats actually causing the wiring damage? And if there is a record of sunroof repair in vehicle history, claim it never fixed the route of problem, so viewed as return on previous work... maybe second look from a local tech that works on toyotas ( not dealer) normally dealer will just quote to replace everything from A to Z, if it's just a section of wiring it can be spliced to fix the short for couple hundred...

What was the reason the warranty claim was denied from Toyota? It doesn't make sense that there needs to be another problem causing the problem with the wiring harness on the roof. Did they determine the cause of the failure? They can't just say "it's broke, dunno why. But it ain't warranty." This sounds completely bizarre to me. Did they mention if the particular failure was not covered due to time? It can't be mileage. Is it because you're the second owner? You can seek a goodwill repair situation given the situation you're in. Brand new to you. No modifications. Low mileage. A hard no from everyone is extremely fishy. Keep pushing. Go above the dealer and seek out Toyota customer service.

If possible, maybe just reset the light. It may not come back. You never know. I say this because if the sunroofs not leaking, how can there be any rust in the wiring? Also, I found out years ago through experience that one should never buy a third party warranty.

Every 2-3 years we special order and buy a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon and Jeep Grand Cherokee top of the line. We sit down for a week or two and figure out our cost and trade in value. Go to the bank and get obtain a certified check to payment. Meet with general manager and sales to have a documented signed contract with the dealer. Our special ordered vehicles usually take 2-3 months for delivery. The same day vehicles arrive we go online to the vehicle manufacturer and order the maximum warranty for both. We save $1,000 -$1500 by obtaining the factory extended warranty. Never had and problems with our warranty or extended warranty. The only aftermarket warranty I would trust would be AAA!!! Yanni

All these aftermarket repair warranty companies have the same language. "We pay on all "covered" repairs". They tend to nit pick the part of the covered item that failed. Your AC may be covered but not the failed items associated with the AC, like switches, wiring, mounts, clutches, pulleys, etc. You might check Consumer Reports and Edmund's. They list reports from consumers that have owned the reviewed cars. Some are real lemons and money pits. While others are pretty trouble free. I'm surprised you've had the problems with such low mileage Land Cruisers. They have enjoyed a bullet proof reputation for years. Good luck with getting it fix and sold.

I’m curious did they remove the roof rack for the wrap? You have to be careful with the interior clips spinning. If not done correctly it could allow water inside. @@BenHardyCars well the only other thing I can think of is the previous owner left the sun roof open or windows down in a rain storm and never took care of it the right way. Might be the reason for the cologne spray. For a car to smell like cologne months later the owner would be using half a bottle a day. Now if he used it on the fabric floor headliner etc to cover up a mildew smell I’d imagine the smell would linger. I’m just guessing though. It’s such an odd issue to be having. 8k blows.

You can see the miserable craftsmanship. I have a sun roof. I really love sun roofs but I am terrified of using it so never open it completely. Just use it to let light in. Funny enough months ago while researching about the Fit I did find that water leaks are a issue on this gen Lexus LX and Land Cruiser. Some family friends have had several Lexus LXs though and never had issues.

Toyota quality has been on decline since around 2010 when they began to lie and say that it's "normal" for their engines to burn up to a quart of oil every 1200 miles and pretend that they didn't know their truck and SUV frames had major rust issues for decades. Or selling vehicles with the 8-speed and pretending they aren't aware that the torque converter clutch was failing and damaging the transmission. Or insisting that howling rear differentials on the 3rd gen Tacoma was "normal" and due to normal resonances in the truck. Or completely ignoring known issues with the front differential on the 2nd gen Tacoma and carrying them over to the totally redesigned 3rd gen Tacoma.

Warranty companies are not in business to pay warranties, they are in business to make money, and these 'for a few pennies a day' versions will go out of business and reform so they can drop old customers and claims. But my main issue is that I can't understand for the life of me why anybody wants a sun/moonroof (they always cause problems eventually) and I say this as a Raptor owner with one and I hate it, not because of any problems but because it is a ticking time bomb, whether it is used or not. I bought mine used like Ben did his Land Cruiser because pretty much every one I test drove came with one. When we got our new Challenger Scat Pack we had to drive to another state just to find one equipped as wanted WITHOUT a sunroof. Good luck, Ben.

Consumers need to know what these companies are actually doing and who they are. There should be nothing illegal about telling the public how your problem was handled by different entities that you thought should be involved.
