9:36 the dynamics symbol is a stylized camera aperture, but it's a weak metaphor. In a camera, the aperture controls the amount of light coming through the lens... so it would be more appropriate to be used as a symbol for volume-'how much of a given amount of signal can come through at a given time?' Or, perhaps, as a 'one-slider' control for mic position/amount of 'room' in the signal, as aperture by proxy also controls depth of field-'how intimate or broad is the subject in relation to its environment?' As a symbol for dynamics, which is neither of those concepts, it's a bit obtuse.

Finally an unbiased opinion about it. I hope they'll see the video, great job on this. You forgot to talk about their promo videos which are like "we did that or done that and because creativity shouldn't be complicated...." while full composition is played with a lots of automation and lots of instances... I need to hear how the instrument will sound in isolation on its own.... But on the other hand it's free and I shouldn't complain, most annoying thing to me is how people are biased about it, like it's the best thing ever made

Arya, how long did it take you to create this masterpiece of a video? I have probably seen all of your vids but this is ridiculous and I can only do guesswork how many days / month it has taken to put all of this together. For a good reason though: You're absolutely not alone with your opinion. LABS is a joke on the UI although it just sounds (mainly) wonderful. If I would use it regularly I would probably need to save presets in Reaper and order these in which ever manner I'd prefer. And for me the golden raspberry goes to the turning movement of the big nob. I sometimes think they programmed this to make fun of us not getting it to work... And why does the pitchwheel not do anything? Or does it work on an instrument by instrument basis?
@IDDQDSound2 жыл бұрын
I think it mostly does nothing (on some synths it does I think) but maybe it's because some of the patches are samples? Not that that's a deterrent, but maybe it would mean they would have to code in a pitch shift algo and they didn't want to? I've seen hyper-realistic libraries not have the pitch bend because it tends not to sound natural, but it definitely doesn't apply to all LABS, and if people want the unrealistic sound, we may as well give it to them right? :)

So true. And very funny! Subbed. Always hated Spitfire’s UI choices. It has that “made in London by people with fancy friends” design vibe. It’s a detail indicative of an attitude that results in bad design choices like this. Caring more about looking cool than being helpful. Looks great the first time you launch it, and then you try and get work done quickly and it’s like “will you stop being fancy and be useful?” IMO that extends to the pricing of their products. Labs is great, but i’m a composer who doesn’t work for big corporations, and even on sale i’ve never been able to afford most of their libraries. Would it kill them to do a Black Friday price affordable to non-corporate musicians or people who live in countries where everything is more expensive? Also, just a note… Installing plugins you used to have to do all that sign-in garbage for every plugin you installed, not just once for each company. Also you used to have to leave a useless piece of plastic sitting in one of your USB ports to use your software, permanently reducing your computer’s capability to connect to instruments, external drives and audio interfaces. For a while i had a Logic dongle *and* an iLok dongle. That’s two USB ports burnt… and they wonder why piracy became normalized? Maybe i’m just old but frankly i love using installers for installation & validation. Because i can pop in, install all my Softube stuff (for example), and pop out, boom done.
@sub-jec-tiv2 жыл бұрын
Maybe they make Labs hard to use because usability is a privelege reserved for the rich who can afford their product plugins?
@IDDQDSound2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the sub and the comment! Don't even get me started on Dongles (or really anyone doing production) Also yeah totally agreed. Everything you said is the reason why I have preferred to use a sub par sounds as opposed to the great sounding patches heard in Labs. It’s too clunky, not sure what it wants to do, be minimalistic or customizable and takes an eternity to understand how to get the sound to work or the libraries to download and sync that by the end of the hour I wasted I no longer am feeling creative and am completely drained of the original idea altogether. Avoid Spitfire Audio labs until the fix their massive errors!! But also thank you for the free great sounds that I will not use because I simply can’t be bothered to set it up in an entire afternoon.

Totally agree. Great video I have all the labs stuff. But I don't use it as much as I did a year ago because the additional products have just made it less fun to use. Eg it's quicker to fire up one of my other vsts such as falcon and search for what I want than scroll in labs. And then when it came to buying the paid orchestra product having used bbsco, and liked the sounds, my user experience with labs put me off. The opposite of what you'd imagine they're trying to achieve. Maybe if you have the circular controller they all seem to have etc it works for you. Ie you're a pro. But surely they look at the competition such as East West (which I ended up subbing to) and see how simple a UI can be for a home hobbiest. But also fulfill the needs of the pros. Looking at the UI, it seems that the developers don’t care much about user efficiency. It’s like it’s made to be not very ergonomical on purpose. This video is even more hilarious on double speed 😂 definitely feels like a case of style over substance with a bit of general disorganisation mixed in. Grrrr. But like you say at the start, great product, would recommend 😇

More laughs in this video than I've had in a long time. Unfortunately this will probably mean another shedload of downloading (yes, I got a new hard drive too).

@jeremydbjbjbjb2 жыл бұрын
Lol. Everyone likes a rant! I always assumed that the crazy download thing is there to add friction so that they save on bandwidth for hosting GB of free stuff, but maybe it's just an oversight. I love LABS, and everything you've said is true.
@IDDQDSound2 жыл бұрын
Hmmm interesting, maybe saving bandwidth was an issue, they could still let us download all and then pause some though :)

Great video. Now time to do one on reaper and how lame that interface is. I would love for them to take a 1-year break to retool the whole interface with no new features

Damn, I have actually learned something new about LABS. I sincerely had no idea about the reverb. Huh. What a stupid UI. I mean, I knew that already, but this is even sillier than I'd thought.

Glad I'm the only one who didn't know about the reverb.

Basically, the design company they work with is completely clueless. I was similarly confused with the UI of LABS.

Im going to try to make KONTAKT libraries from the LABS because i really don't like LABS at all.
@IDDQDSound2 жыл бұрын
Yeah for some of their libraries they have kontakt patches but not for LABS, which is also weird!
@DarkSideofSynth2 жыл бұрын
Well, since this video is about UI/UX, do we REALLY want to ignore Kontakt's own usability issues? ;) LABS does waste space but Kontakt is still unscalable, and makes your eyes bleed 🤬

@7:00 aturia dropped the ball as well with there augmented strings and voices plugins with exactly the same idea ...... wasted space :-P
@IDDQDSound2 жыл бұрын
Totally! Arturia GUIs are sometimes just laughably big! They think if they make it big it will somehow be immersive, but it just looks cluttered with not much extra benefits. If I'm playing I'm looking at my keyboard and so it doesn't matter what it looks like and when you want to mix or adjust the tone it's just a pain!
@JanSandahl2 жыл бұрын
I gave up on LABS. I'm not putting up with it no matter how great the libraries are. Then, add another plugin/environment that's equally bad and you ready to die rather than feel like making music. :) I hope they clean all this up. Thanks for taking the time.

Yup, this is why I can't be bothered even downloading. So sick of apps. Couldn't these all just be .SFZ instruments? That'd solve these UI problems too by leaving it to the user. Actually no, this is letting potential customers know what to expect more of if they buy any of their virtual instruments, so they can quit while they're ahead.
@IDDQDSound2 жыл бұрын
I think they are trying to be a one-piece solution so people wouldn't need extra downloads, but yeah the .sfz option would be nice. I guess pirating is the concern they may have?

@@IDDQDSound True, for their paid instruments. Although for free instruments, all the hoop-jumping as if its a paid product seems unnecessary (from the musicians' perspective). Really enjoyed the video!

Hahahaaa. I literally deleted all my LABS stuff because of the UI. Drove me nuts. I do like the thumbnails design though, but like youre saying. It doesnt align with the rest of their design language and that design serves no real purpose. And dont get me started on...
@IDDQDSound2 жыл бұрын
I don't hate the thumbnail design, it's just sooooo weird! Like they have a random Iranian poem on one of them, but it's not the Dulcimer which is an Iranian instrument, but another random instrument :)
