I'd love to see an experienced blue and a new purple belt up next. I find it very hard to judge where blue ends and purple begins, and many coaches have differing opinions on just how good a purple belt should be overall.

Yeah what I think I’ve realised is rank doesn’t mean everything, the difference between a good white belt, blue, purple etc and a bad one is huge, some competitive athletic and smart white and blues do often beat less capable higher belts, some blacks would completely outclass other blacks etc, accent through ranks is typically a personal journey based on personal potential, not a reliable way to compare the skillset of different practitioners. Coaches have a tricky job to try and do what benefits each different student.
@aang66312 жыл бұрын
Ranking is weird, in general, for combat sports. I like the Muay Thai approach of not having a rank. Bruce Lee said "A belt is only good for holding up the pants."

This is brilliant. It would be great to see even more blue vs white belts. As a white belt it's so helpful to see what mistakes I'm likely to make as well as what I should aspire to. I mean we all aspire to black belt level but the details of exploiting a poorly applied reverse de la riva are just less applicable than the details of why it is SO important to keep your T-rex arms poised! And make those grips matter! etc. That said, watching the higher level belts is still awesome! It's good to see experts apply the same fundamentals I'm working on... so I guess I'm saying it's all good, just gimme more. GIMME GIMME GIMME Love your work man, love the podcast

@davidgregory48892 жыл бұрын
Jordan at 8:24 you mention Glenn brining his right arm through and should have rather use his right elbow as a frame to stop the back take - can you explain as not understanding? What should he have framed against - Aaron's left hip?
@JordanTeachesJiujitsu2 жыл бұрын
I really wanted to get a clip of what I meant so everyone could visualize it but didn't have time unfortunately 😩. Anytime from mount you get on your side to escape you want your hands on theirs hips and elbow faired on the side that's closer to the sky. Having your elbow flaired creates a barrier so they can't come around for the back or technical mount. In this case hands on Aaron's left hip and Glenn's right elbow flaired.
@davidgregory48892 жыл бұрын
@@JordanTeachesJiujitsu Thanks for the quick reply, I understand what you mean. I get caught alot in Glenn's position and haven't figured that out, thank you. Our chaps tend to try get a seat belt from Aaron's position and I have had moderate success getting a baseball grip on their connection and then pushing the seatbelt off as they sit back and thus end up in their open guard.

Hey man just came across this comment. I am a 77kg blue belt and I rolled with a white belt who is 116kg on my KZbin channel, you might be interested in watching that. Basically the best tactic is to not let them pass your guard because escaping all that weight is hard, and to attack their back and their legs. This is what I found anyway!

Wait a long second! You just blew my mind with the sweep explanation at around 7:00. So those reversals aren’t considered sweeps because you have to be in a guard to have a sweep?
@stevecolvin12342 жыл бұрын
I am a white belt. I am learning techniques and positions, but when it comes to rolling, i struggle with determining what positions i need to work on transitioning to, or what submission to go for. I get smashed a lot with weight on my belly, so getting out from bottom of half guard or side control is probably one I am having the most trouble with.
@matn77432 жыл бұрын
Ditto. I’ll spend a whole round trapped in bottom mount or in side control, patiently trying the escape techniques we are taught, but failing over and over again. I understand it’s supposed to suck at this level, so any philosophy that helps improve those positions is appreciated.

At around the 7 minute mark, you explain how reversals would not result in sweep points since they don't start from a guard. AGF has recently changed this rule in their organization and now grant 2 points for reversals as well. I personally really like this change because although not performed from a guard, reversing your opponent into a bottom position should still be rewarded in my eyes. Im just curious what your opinion is on this.
