Yes indeed : the position switch is one thing, putting Tre at the lead and Collins on the bench were important. Plus Wemby needed to adjust to NBA (FIBA rules are different, NBA field is larger, 3pts line isn't the same...) and his partners needed to understand how to play with him. The games after the AS break say a lot about what Spurs are able to do. With 2 top 10 picks, they can be a play in or play off team this season even if West is loaded.

Glad you brought up that April 12th Denver game. To me, that was Wemby's best game of the season. Even better than the game against OKC when Wemby finally ripped that ROY trophy from Chet's hands w/that block. Denver NEEDED that win to clinch homecourt throughout the playoffs and Wemby, with basically the Spurs’ G-league squad, guys like Sidy Cissoko who no one knows outside South Texas, beat them in playoff-level nail-biter. And for anyone who watched, Wemby was absolutely the best player on the floor for long stretches -- and that was against the MVP. And if you remember, Wemby had gone up against Joker a week earlier (April 4th) and they took the Nuggets down to the wire in Denver and Wemby almost had a quadruple-double. The guy is absolutely legit and I could see the Spurs sacrificing a couple of picks on a guy like Darius Garland; not nearly the cost of a Trae trade in either salary or what you'd have to give up for similar production.

Victor still has a lot to improve, and until he does improve them it will be hard to win in a meaningful way in the NBA. In 2022 the Spurs had 22 wins, they added Wembenyama ("best prospect ever") and were able to improve to... no wait, they again had 22 wins. Because of how flashy he is and how fun he is to watch people have a hard time processing what they're watching. Wemby is a beast defensively but is currently a poor offensive option, and the best thing that could happen to him is for him to get paired with a high volume superstar and for him to accept a reduced role on offense outside wide open dunks and lead-extending 3's. There is a reason his offensive win share is negative. Wemby's splits on the year with high volume were 47 FG% / 33 3PT% / 80 FT%, which is good for 81st/140, 152nd/160, and 74th/110 in the league for qualified players in each category, aka not the guy you want taking high volume shots. Speaking of high volume shots, the guy has zero discretion on his current shot selection. He will pull up in transition and shoot the Spurs out of their rhythm, I watched him do this countless times this season. In transition without the ball he will stop running at the 3pt line and wait for the ball instead of hitting the block. You're telling me a guy who is seven and a half feet tall doesn't lead the league in rebounds? If you look at the discretion in top rebounders it's all on the offensive end as well - the other guys are on the low block on offense when their team is shooting Anyway, I know glazers will hate this take but someone has to reel people back into reality. He's a monster on defense, he's freakishly tall, he should stick to that and be an expert at those in the NBA. On defense he could be legendary. However... there is no reason for him to be a teams volume shooter or ball handler. What he offers in those areas is on the lower end of what the league has to offer and will not add very many wins to the win column.
@360carter37 ай бұрын
I get that his efficiency is not there yet but I’m sorry your take is terrible. You’re basically suggesting Wemby to be a regular traditional defensive big. Nice try but this isn’t Rudy Gobert were talking about. Saying he should be leading the league in rebounds just because he’s 7’5 I get it you want him to be in the low post grabbing every board 24/7 but NO that’s not who he is and all he can do. And I know you didn’t just say he’s a poor offensive option. Put him on any other team in the league he’s at least instantly one of the first scoring options. Not to mention he’s gonna be the leading offensive threat for France this summer in the Olympics( cuz who else is on their team💀?) I get that his shooting splits this year were kinda trash for a guy his size but he’s still a kid learning how to adjust to the league. His offensive game/shooting splits will polish in due time
@DCIphanatic7 ай бұрын
@@360carter3 Any team where he is a volume shooter, the team will not be as good as they could be. It's not that his shooting just isn't efficient, it's that he's near the bottom of the league as a shooter across all positions and he is literally the guy responsible for cleaning up missed shots. Having your center shooting and missing is a double hit to team basketball. His scoring should be created off of another elite star in the NBA to allow him to dunk and shoot open momentum shots. Consider who is rebounding while Victor is taking the most shots on his team (many of whom have better splits than him)... It's obviously better basketball to have your center rebounding missed shots than to be the guy creating the missed shot. Does that mean he never shoots, never gets to dribble? Of course not, but unless you plan on starting another center you're going to be missing a giant portion of what the center position provides for your team on offense - and you're giving that up for 47/33/80 splits on high volume? A majority of his work should be down low, he should lead the league in blocks, FG%, and rebounds and the next guy should not be close on the lists. I understand you not getting my take though, it's really entertaining to watch and it's hard to separate that from bad basketball sometimes. Again, there is a reason his offensive winshares are negative and without his defense he is currently a net negative to a team's total wins
@360carter37 ай бұрын
@@DCIphanatic Again, you’re trying to suggest he’d just be a regular traditional big that gets every rebound and is great defensively. That’s not all of what he is bro. That’s not even gonna be his assignment for Team France this summer. That’s Rudy’s job. Wemby creates his own shots while getting others involved and being the teams primary defender. And he’s gonna play the 4 and not the 5. Tbh he’s not naturally a center he’s really a power forward who can just play center. You asked why he’s not leading the league in Rebounds and paint FG%? Because he’s really not a center. They just have playing it because he’s the tallest person on the floor and the Spurs don’t have a back up big. (Zach Collins is no big man) Because you’re right and you have a point. If Wemby isn’t leading the league in rebounds and paint FG% while being the tallest guy on the floor, that’s means he’s not a Center. He’s a power forward who wants to create his own shot and feed his teammates. Him being a center is gonna limit his offensive skillset to just being a Shaq type big, which HES NOT. If that’s what you’re asking him to be I’m sorry but no bro. Just accept the fact we’ve never seen anything like him and he’s gonna eventually be the face of basketball
@DCIphanatic7 ай бұрын
@@360carter3 He logged 100% of his minutes this season at center but that's really not important. The argument is was he playing good basketball? And the answer right now is no. You keep saying I'm limiting him to being a traditional center and I'm not, I still think he's an effective scorer off pick and roll, post up, and certain pull up shooting - Shaq would never be allowed to do any of Wemby's shooting. Just because I don't want him doing it all game doesn't mean it's not a part of his game, thats what you don't get It's like when an NFL team has a TE or other skill position that played QB in college - they're not going to take over the entire game at QB, but they will get a healthy handful of plays to showcase that talent. That's the way Wemby can be successful and win in the NBA. All of that is in his bag but are ineffective weapons when used in volume. It will not win games. He needs his offensive volume reduced, to focus on defense where he can really make his impact in the league. By the way offensive rebounds offer a great opportunity to playmakers to get assists and easy looks too. Its not about traditional vs non-traditional right now, it's about is he going to do the high basketball IQ plays to win games. He is the best rebounder in the game and is one of the worst shooters in the league and your argument is that he's playing good basketball by... not rebounding? It's cool that he used to be essentially a guard for his European team but in the NBA that is not the formula. It's really fun to watch though

Honestly, if they made a move for the #1 overall pick from the Hawks and secured Garland, I think they’d be ready to compete. They get a new gen version of the twin towers to lock down the paint and the one thing they’re missing as a team for both the core and Wemby in a good point. The story for the Spurs this entire season wasn’t just that Wemby was destroying the league, it was that his team just didn’t pass him the ball. I think a core built around Wemby entirely would understand where the ball should go at all times, and that’s when they start winning.

I’ve also heard Windy say in the beginning of the season that he heard from a source close to the Spurs GM that they’re not looking on making any big moves and it’s been proven true so far. No big trades so far, just continuing the tank for high draft picks. Even with their draft picks this year, no one knows who the Spurs are really zeroing in. Lots of potential trade rumors with the Spurs always being the favorites to land these superstar free agents, but so far the Spurs have been very quiet. Interestingly enough tho, Manu Ginobili who’s part of the Spurs FO had an interview before and he said that the Spurs will not be contending until or after year 3 of rebuild. That probably means they will tank again this season, and I’ve seen that the Spurs have potentially 5 or 7 draft picks on 2025, the one with the better draft class. Spurs also own the Hawks unprotected 2025 pick so even if they don’t tank, they’re guaranteed another FRP on top of still having their own FRP.

5:54 Sochan is not for trade, not for Garland type player

Get off Sochan train. If he doesn’t make a decent jump this 3rd year spurs should be ready to move on, inconsistency marred by flashes of what he can be. He can’t ride young card forever

You can't deny flashes of brilliance. And plus he can and SHOULD be patient atm, he's only 20 years old

@@dansheffield4021 I mean I’m being harsh sure but there’s a lot of cooks in kitchen and everyone acting like he’s another heir to the throne when in all likelihood by end of Wembys rookie deal, barely any of the guys here will probably be left

You've got to add more picks if you want Markkanen. I've seen reports from NBA insiders saying Ainge won't give up Markkanen for anything less than 4 1st's. Obviously that can change, but knowing Ainge, it isn't likely. Also, as a Jazz fan I'd be pretty pissed if we traded Lauri. We traded Mitchell for no reason, entering an unnecessary rebuild and we are winning with Lauri. I think most Jazz fans would feel the same

While Wemby is still healthy, Spurs got to compete as early as possible.
@psalm82v67 ай бұрын
I don't care what anyone says, if a rookie can make veteran super hoopers consistently doubt their own offense, then he's an all time talent heading for Goatship. I believe that Wemby, at the end of his career, would be compared more to Bill Russell and Wilt, than with MJ.
@jakubdovgosheya50537 ай бұрын
ain't no way Spurs are gonna be competitive this year if the 2025 draft class is so stacked - they are gonna start some crazy development plan that will help them tank, like Sochan at PG last year, so that this year is not wasted but still gives them a lottery pick. I don't believe they have enough assets as for now to actually trade for a good roster - aside from a good starting 5, you need a deep rotation, and any trade they could make now would leave them with almost no subs

Spurs would never do that trade. Giving up so many pieces for Garland when they can just draft their future PG in the draft. Garland ain’t worth that haul.

I think the Spurs right thing to do right now is hiring me as their GM. I would get Either Tidjane Salaun or Matas Buzelis at 4th pick and Rob Dillingham at 8. And let these young guys grow together over the years and build chemistry (Wemby, Vassel, Salaun, Buzelis, Rob) they'll be the core of the team and get some good role players that compliments/fits to their game and wait till they're ready to compete for a championship. Replace Sochan for a taller Power forward that can space the floor and defend well, kinda like Lauri at the 4. I expect in year 3 starting from now, Rob would be close to Tyrese Maxey. Vassell would be discipline in his shot selection(not forcing anything) and become a better facilitator, he can do that, he'll be a much athletic version of Devin Booker. Salaun or Buzelis would be on Ingrams level or MPJ (a tall wing that could score on all three levels, good ball handling and good defensively) this position is very important on competing for a championship as you all know great and successful teams do have plenty of great small forwards Lakers(LeBron) Suns(KD) before it was Mikal, Wolves(McDaniels), Pelicans(Zion, Igram, Jones, Murphy III) Boston(Brown, Tatum), Nuggets(MPJ) Dallas(Luka), OKC(JDub) Bucks(Giannis, Middleton and to prove my point from year 2012-2019 the finals MVP were all Small forwards 12-Bron 13-Bron 14-Kawhi 15-Iggy 16-Bron 17-KD 18-KD 19-Kawhi So yeah I need to Salaun/Buzelis to be those type of guys so that they could help the spurs take it to the top. For power forward I need to replace Sochan, He is too undersized for that position he can't play the Small forward either because he has poor ball handling, he too slow to guard other 3's, he doesn't have a consistent outside shots, he is a poor playmaker. Gotta get someone like Siakam/Lauri/Jabbari Smith/Franz Wagner. Then at Center it's Wemby. The bench would be PG:Lonzo/Tyus Jones SG:Bruce Brown/Bones Hyland SF: Wiggins PF/C:Clingan/Edey I ain't listening to all these Spurs Fans who does have little patience that wants to trade the young guys and future picks for a superstar/all star type of player. It's not like next year or the next year were gonna be competing for a chip. Im gonna build the team through draft and getting good role players. Kinda like Nuggets, Bucks,Warriors. I ain't doin the same thing Lakers, Suns and Brooklyn did. So yeah that's all, hope the Spurs will hire me as their GM.😂
