Also, family of 12 here… our grocery budget is still $1200 a month for all groceries AND household items. I cloth diaper and don’t use paper towels regularly. We use $1.25 store body wash for everyone… I buy the biggest bottles I can get there! I do all our laundry before 2pm or after 7pm and limit our electric use during the pique hours our company charges more for kw during that time! We do the dishes before or after that time too! And electronics aren’t on ALL THE TIME! I DO NOT shop Costco or Sam’s club because, in my experience, the per unit price is never better than what I can buy at Walmart or aldi or at my local Amish or local grocery discount store. We don’t eat much cereal… Sunday mornings with fruit since my hubby is a pastor and Sundays are busy for us… but we eat oats 3-5 different ways and that’s what is served 3x a week! My kids don’t complain… as a matter of fact, my teens have been eating the leftover oatmeal for snacks through the day! Snacks, when needed, aside from fruit have been popcorn, carrots, and discount yogurts from the Amish store… .99/case of 12! 🎉 or we’ll slice cheese up and have that. So… we aren’t even as extreme as your family and are still surviving on $100 per person, per month still. I pray to find deals on meat… God provides. I pray for people who have extra venison or beef and want to give it away to find us somehow … God brings them our way! It’s a wonderful testament to His faithfulness for our family!

I’m a single senior, but use a 1 quart Crock Pot (purchased in the late 1970’s) for my oatmeal. I add the ingredients (oats, dried fruit, etc.) before going to bed. Letting this slow-cook all night means that breakfast is ready ASAP in the morning. Sprinkling with chopped nuts adds even more flavor. I began doing this during my college years, as 7:30 classes gave me little time for breakfast prep.

Maybe you could start a support group or an economising group, somewhere to share ideas, resources, etc. I'm in a similar position, my answer was to turn off my boiler (in Spring), stop using back-up fan heaters, and buy a heated blanket & contact my local council in UK due to lack of insulation in my flat.... waiting to hear. My bank balance dropped to debit and my cc bill got stuck at the maximum. I'm acclimatising myself to the cold and keeping semi active, this seems to be working.

Seems to me that the concept of saving money is really pretty simple. You merely stock up on things that are on a good sale, but only if they are items that you regularly use or that you think you might be able to adopt into your meal plans

Maybe she should have said in Western Canada. That flyer that you showed was in Ontario. She's in Western Canada, in Alberta, I'm in BC, the next province over. I pulled up the same flyer here and the prices are no where close to as cheap as those ones you showed. Even though they are special flyer prices they are substantially more. For example, the grapes were on sale here too, but they were $3.98 for 2 lbs. Double the 99cents a pound you showed, same for the roast etc. And gas where I live is $2.28 per litre here, that's $8.63 a gallon. So she's not as wrong as this video makes it seem. However, it's still important to shop the sales etc. It's all relative. You don't ship the cookbooks to Canada anyway, so that's a mute point. I bought the e-book versions, but sure wish I could get paper copies.

Love you gals!! You say out loud what I am thinking. Have always bought the sales for years. For example today I paid 48 cents for pasta, 29 cents for bananas. 99 cents a pound for boneless skinless chicken breast and pork butt roast. 77cents for apples and packages of frozen vegetables. Paid $31 for $80 worth of food- every item was on sale. Walked out of the store feeling proud for saving $50 in less than an hour.

I am so, so thankful this community exists. Full transparency, I am usually pretty grounded in staying the frugal course, and haven't really ever felt 'entitled' to anything. But scanning online this week's grocery prices was really bumming me out. I was tempted to feel a little sorry for myself. One listen to this show and reading through the comments helped fuel my tank to press on. So thankful!!

Buy at least one hot water bottle for each household member before winter. My son's bedroom is in the basement. Coldest room in the house. In the coldest months in winter, I'm sure his room is 10°-15°C at night. Lots of blankets and still takes several hours for his body heat to heat up the bed. But, with a hot water bottle, he's instantly warm!♥️🇨🇦

I know it is not our "job" to judge others. That is God's place. With that being said, it is appalling to see the way people have lost sight of simple truths and skills. Live well within your means is something I was raised with. Example. In 1995 we began the process of planning and building a home from the ground up. We owned the land and went to the bank to pre-qualify for a construction loan with all of our financial paperwork in hand. We told the banker that we wanted to build this house and the estimated cost was $100,000. The banker reviewed our paperwork and said we qualified for much more - at least $250,000 to which our reply was no, we want to build our home and we want a $100,000 loan. The banker said let's review your paperwork and pointed out the first item on the list: 10% of our total gross income was dedicated to tithing. He asked what that was all about and we explained to him that we believe that all the money that we receive is God's money, and the least we can do is return 10% of it to Him to use to do His work. The banker replied that that's not considered in the calculations for determining what we can borrow. I mustered my best evil eye and looked at this person and told him that if push comes to shove and we're down on our luck God will get his 10% before the bank gets anything on a house payment. The bankers attitude changed very swiftly and he glossed over the rest of the paperwork and we established the loan for $100,000. We built the house with the help of a general contractor (and only went a tiny bit over budget, thanks to the general's honesty), lived in it for nearly 15 years. Then I had to retire for medical reasons and we had to move out of state for my health. We sold the house, paid off the remaining mortgage, and bought a repossessed house on a quarter acre of land (which is what we left behind) and our square footage was reduced by about a third. We paid for the house in cash, we did the cosmetic repairs and cleaning painting etc that was necessary, put in landscaping (which in the desert is rock), and dropped a small swimming pool in the backyard for therapy. The only thing we had to pay for was our moving expenses we incurred during the trip and having our household goods shipped - and if I had it to do over again I would have sold it all and started over, but the moving company pulled a shady deal on us and it was an expensive lesson learned. Because of our living within our means we weathered two lengthy single income periods while living in our house and now we are debt free. I have never felt such a reduction of a weight on my shoulders in my entire life. We are accumulating savings and when something goes wrong we can take care of it. We can do regular maintenance and I'm praying that the car runs until neither one of us drives because it is 13 years old now. We have always been thrift shoppers, saving money for things like undies and shoes to be purchased brand new. We invested in a RoboCut, then a Flowbee 30ish years ago and save thousands of dollars on haircuts! IF I want a manicure I do it myself, but short nails are My preference. My husband is a championship shopper and finds more bargains than anybody I've ever met. He comes home with groceries that he pays pennies on the dollar for because he makes it a habit to face the shelving in the stores and read the sell-by dates and brings it to the attention of management when they are about to go beyond the date where the store has to pull the goods. He then offers them pennies on the dollar and they accept! It's amazing the relationships he has with management in every grocery store in our area and they even let him know when there's a sale that's about to be posted. I take care of clothing repairs and other tasks I can handle from a chair. Utilities are always paid on time. Credit cards are used for convenience and paid off each month. Our credit rating is excellent, but dropped a few points because we have no debt. Financial institutions push debt on us any way they can because they know that is a means of control. You have to be strong and put your foot down. In 40 years of marriage we have weathered several "storms" in life, and know that, "There but for the grace of God go I.". I truly believe that the Lord will help those who help themselves by working, developing as self sufficient a lifestyle as possible, and planning ahead as much as we can. Then we turn the rest over to Him. I'm sorry I rambled on so long but I am thoroughly enjoying your videos. We are very blessed to have raised a daughter with the same mindset and she met and married a man who shares our values. I just wish we could come up with solution for her health situation because she is a very sick young woman. Since I know from what you have said in your videos that you are praying folks, please keep our daughter Joanna in your prayers. She really needs the intervention on her behalf. Thank you.

I have been using Castile soap for body wash, face cleansing and shampoo for years. I reuse, upcycle, repurpose everything I can. I have worked with troubled children and I’ve seen irresponsible parents show up to visit the child with fancy nails, smoking , a better car than any nurse drives yet they can’t buy the child socks or anything else they need. We nurses kept socks of all sizes in our car trunk for when a child needed them. I have a friend that feeds 4 dogs chicken and rice and then complains she doesn’t have money for her needs or to go to eat a meal with me. I stopped inviting her for anything and don’t feel sorry for her. I’ve taken several financial classes to learn how to manage money. I know the supply chain is backed up so when a restaurant doesn’t have an item I don’t get upset. I only eat out when I have guests. About 1989 I started eating twice a day. I know so many that think they “ have” to eat 3 times meals a day. I use a drying rack, I use one towel 3 times…. Before traveling to Europe my family did this but in Europe and other countries it’s expected. I use natural oils and remedies for health issues. I hate it when people want to blame it being different “back then “stories. In 1983 as a LPN I made $1.75 an hour and supported two children. I have never bought a vehicle over $17,000. I always buy used and keep at least 10 years. I don’t feel sorry for the parents that over extend the child. I know parents that tell children they can do one activity per school semester. This makes their life easier to manage and they’re not exhausted all the time. Thanks from Arkansas for sharing

It's not the actual price of things, I was actually getting uptight over the focus on the prices you were focusing on, until you started pointing out that the prices ARE immaterial. You are absolutely correct, it's the PRACTICE of finding ways to save money, of conserving and preserving what you have, of caparison shopping, of buying what is in season, of making things stretch, and of reusing and repurposing where possible. Of spending more for quality if needed on items that are NECESSARY for survival, and going cheaper if it's for convenience. Things like that ... Keep up the good work.

I’m from Ontario and just got home from Florida mid September and I can tell you that when you factor in the difference in our dollars the prices in Canada are cheaper for most things. I took non perishable food from home but was in four stores ( two different towns) to get yogurt, eggs and milk and I had a good look around. ( btw I cooked in our units the entire day and we ate sandwiches on our drive there and back. We weren’t eating in restaurants. We stayed in the timeshare that my dad got thirty years ago and we stayed on my IHG points on the road ). Prices are definitely higher than what they were in 2020, but the prices sure weren’t better in Florida. Oh and I’m driving my dad’s used car not a brand new one. I make six figures but I want my mortgage paid off in two years and am expanding my business and starting a new one. You are right you need to shop sales to save money.

Ladies you are almost completely accurate. I’m 65 , I’ve spent my life helping take care of family (both my parents) and helping brother s. I admit to making some stupid mistakes. My house is paid for, so is the car. I draw SSI, snd went back to work to accomplish some things, like preparing for SHTF. We have to take responsibility for ourselves. I’m disabled that’s why I went to SSI. If I can work, to cancel everyone else

There are free recipes, tips and tricks, on your website. You can easily spend days learning new, useful stuff. And, my friend lives in Canada and the stores are extremely expensive where she lives. So, she drives an hour and a half, once a month, to a cheaper grocery store and does all her errands in that day. She also gets some things delivered. You have to try and do the work.

I used to get Starbucks about 3 days per week until a few years ago when I subtracted the cost from my hours worked. Then I changed it to a twice a month treat until I had the evil virus. Now coffee tastes so awful that I don’t even miss it.

Yes food and utilities have got more expensive, the utilities especially here in the UK but there are ways to make savings on both.... I shop between Asda (similar to Walmart) Lidl (similar to Aldi which we also have but none near where I live) and Iceland who sell all the basics but focus more on frozen foods.....I can do a weekly shop for 3 for between £75 & £95 per week depending on if I need to stock up on frozen meats and frozen veg..... I'll also put in 1 or 2 tins of soup/veg/tomatoes/evaporated milk in the Trolley to build up my store cupboard, I also get 2/3 cartons of long life milk 2x a month and mostly cook at home. We have our lamps on timers along with the strip lights under the kitchen cabinets , my cooker is electric but that is switched off once I'm finished cooking. The washing machine is switched on once a week to do the weekly wash as I refuse to put a 9kg machine on even for a quick 15 minute wash for only a few items. The telly only goes on at about 7pm as we like to watch some of of our series which she pre recorded, I watch my KZbin channels in the day..... All our cars have been second hand in 20 years of marriage and are replaced when they die, on 3rd car in 20 years Our dining table and chairs along with our sofas are nearly 14 years old but still look new......and we have 2x nest of tables that came from my late MIL'S along with wardrobes from my late Mum's place.....all in excellent condition. I just can't understand nor justify paying £3/5 for a coffee from a large chain of coffee shops, if I want a treat I pay 99 pence for a coffee from McDonald's and that's once in a very blue moon! I've never been able to get my head round alot of Americans (not you guys or those who subscribe to your channel) insist on eating out for 3 meals a day or get so many takeaways every single week..... I'm not saying don't have a takeaway or a treat but have it as a treat occasionally... You can still eat and live well on a budget...... Regardless of where we are in the world tour tips and hints can be applied and they di work.....just use common sense! As Tawra likes to say : GET IT TOGETHER PEOPLE!

People need to shop at a variety of stores, shop sales and use coupons. I went to CVS this morning my bill was about $140 I paid around $10. Using sales, discounts and Extra Care Bucks. Then I got a bunch of Extra Care Bucks to use next week. The prices in our area have went up quite a bit. You just have to change what you buy some weeks.

Yes, we are so entitled in this day and age. I often think of my grandma's depression Era stories and advice. She was amazingly thrifty and the world's best cook. Nothing went to waste in her house, and she fed many people with reinvented leftovers. Those times might have been rough, but they taught people so much. Rest in Peace, Grammie. Thank y'all so much for your show and cookbooks!!!!!!

I've made it a habit to shop for deals at various stores and have learned which stores have the best prices on my staples. A drug store chain sells milk at very deep discounts a few days before expiry. I once paid .50 cents for 4 Litres! I live alone so of course that's too much for one person so I pour them into 8-oz glass jars and freeze them. I make my own laundry detergent AND wash my clothes using a 5-gal pail and a washboard. These are 3 ways that give me very good savings every month. Also cut my own hair and do own nails. When I go out for a coffee/donut, I'll bring my own drink. Prices are increasing on many things but if you take the time and effort to shop around various places, there are excellent deals to be had still. E.G. a case of Campbell's soup can cost up to $24 but Safeway had them for $7, so I bought three cases! I don't think my grocery budget has really changed considering the times we're in. I'm not a complainer, just grateful for what God provides for me here in beautiful Alberta.

We are in great shape with NO debt but we still purchase (most of) our food that is on sale and stock up. Our favorite coffee even on sale has been running $7.99 for a 12 oz. package. We stopped purchasing it once it got over $4.99 on sale. Life is good and we hope to keep that way.

I live in Florida. I don’t often find cereal for 50 cents a box, nor do I really try if I'm honest. But 50 cents for cereal is not the point. The point is to eat what you can find for the best price you can find it (and stock up when you find the best price). We mostly eat oatmeal, eggs with toast or fruit for breakfast. None of these are as cheap as a 50 cent box of cereal, but all of them are cheaper than breakfast out so... it's all about priorities and choices.

I do buy specific items at Costco but only infrequently. I divide it out to last a long time. Shop the sales and check the prices. I catch a lot of errors on prices and I save a lot of money. This week alone over $20 dollars more savings on one trip due to price errors corrected. I do rent an apartment now but I did not get the fancy one but safe, well maintained. Went from 3000 square foot house to 800 square foot apartment. I am enjoying less bills and easy living. Love your cook book. Uses a lot. Easy and simple. Thanks.

Line the inside of the windows with clear bubble wrap. 1. Clean window class. 2. Lightly mist the glass with water from a spray bottle. 3. Use the "small bubble" - bubble wrap. Cut to size and press the wrap on the inside glass with the bubbles facing the glass. 4. Tape the wrap together with clear packing tape if necessary. If you have to buy the wrap, Wal-Mart carrie's rolls of various sizes. Price check with other stores in your area. There is no need to tape the wrap to the glass. It stays put until you pull it off. IT WORKS ! I have used this method for the last 10 years. The original application is still in place.

You absolutely CAN cook in the hotel room ... If there isn't a microwave, there is at LEAST a coffee maker. You can make instant soups, oatmeal, ramen noodles, etc. Not the best, but it's still food that doesn't have to be refrigerated and provides calories.

A host of these type of excuses come for those that have no foresight, lack organizational skills and no preplanning thoughts. It is very frustrating to listen to those all around us that complain and display these mentioned non-attributes when given suggestions they sign and say” well you are just lucky, my brain doesn’t work that way”. It is a learned and practiced behavior it a person has to WANT TO LEARN!

I remember years ago my mom instilling in me the concept of wants verses needs. Basic food, housing transportation ,meds and utilities- they come first. Luxuries( gel nails, salon/spa appointments, golf....) these are wants. If you look over what and where you spend, you'll be able to separate the two. Take care of the Needs first. Prepare ,put money away for emergencies, spend les than you make- this works in good times and bad.- IMO.

I was in a house full of young adults who were all being roommates. I was so hungry one day that I was there that I finally went to the kitchen and went into the pantry. There was a can can of tomato sauce and a can of rice. I opened them up stirred them together and ate them. It was the best tasting food I had ever had. And yes... I made it back home on the Greyhound at the end of the 30 day tour.
