The incorrect Pink Floyd spelling was from the tv network. They appeared on French, German and Dutch TV where some of these things were recorded. This band practically invented the psychedelic acid rock movement. This was way different than the Beatles and Stones that were the big bands of the mid sixties.

I saw Pink Floyd twice on the “Pulse” tour in 1994 and once (in Madison, WI) they opened with “Astronomy Domine”, but with David Gilmour singing lead instead of the original singer and composer Syd Barrett, obviously. 🤘🏼 p.s.: There IS video of them performing this live with Syd on the KZbins.
@LuisOrtiz-xo5kc

The band that eventually became Pink Floyd was founded by architecture students Roger Waters, Richard Wright and Nick Mason. That band had different names and many other members who came and went until Syd Barrett joined (Roger and Syd met in Cambridge many years before the band was formed). He proposed the name "The Pink Floyd Sound", which was eventually shortened to Pink Floyd. During the recording of her first album, Syd began to display erratic behavior, which worsened during their first American tour. It was shortly after that they called David Gilmour, who was also a friend of Syd, to support him as they both played guitar in their youth in Cambridge. The idea was to form a quintet, but since Syd's mental health did not show any improvement, they thought that the solution was for David to permanently take his place and Syd remain simply as a composer (something similar to The Beach Boys). In the end, Syd was kicked out of Pink Floyd and the classic lineup that would make iconic albums like Dark Side of the Moon, Wish you were Here, Animals, The Wall, etc. was left. The musical change after Syd's departure could not have been more radical: from psychedelic pop songs with fantasy and sometimes even childish lyrics to the radical experimentations with dark tones that characterized the first post-Syd years (More, Ummaguma, Atom Heart Mother), Pink Floyd cemented its fame as a unique group in the European avant-garde scene, to the point that some filmmakers requested their services to score their films. In addition, Gilmour printed a blues style that gave the band a more sentimental sound. In any case, the importance of Syd Barret should not be underestimated, as it was his creative genius that continued to motivate them to create innovative and revolutionary music, long after he left the band.

Hey Stacey! Thank you once again for the great surprise with "Astronomy Domine." As Richard Wright puts it in his last interview in 2001 about Syd,, and is in KZbin for you to see; “When Syd started writing, and I don't know exactly when he started writing his first songs for the band and I'm not even sure if he had some already written before he met us but that changed everything definitely because, of course, we were knock out with what he was coming out with” When Syd departed, something they didn’t want to happen but was unavoidable since he could no longer function the band began to struggle to recreate that original magic. This transition is partly how David Gilmour developed his distinct sound on the guitar, drawing inspiration from Syd while also trying to carve out his own musical identity. Ultimately, he created a sound that, while reminiscent of Barrett's, also became uniquely his own. Syd as everybody knows did only one album “The Piper at the Gates of Dawn” which is my favorite album of all, and the singles that have been mentioned already, but he never left Pink Floyd and will never do. They never let him go and you can see that in all Floyd's albums. Thanks again for this reaction, to your channel, and again keep it up! Can wait for the next one! Paul McCartney is performing live tonight here in my hometown, wish me luck! Thanks

A highlight from the Syd era. Still, if you're interested in their early stuff you should really try The Narrow Way Pt. III, Gilmour's first 100% solo contribution to the band, where he single handedly invented the prime Pink Floyd sound. Echoes stems directly from that one, really. Possibly the most interesting, and massively underappreciated, piece in that period

That is one that I have not heard before, but is so recognizably Pink Floyd. The group really is very trippy, even if stone sober, and I think a lot of that is all the stuff they did with sound balance and things like that on their tracks. A lot of it plays into the sympathetic nervous system which can have affects on the brain and senses. Your first pronunciation was correct, doh-me-ney.

The first album is a psychedelic classic and this song certainly qualifies. I saw this live, David Gilmour was channeling Syd's Barrett's intensity and is immense in later versions, this should be on the Pulse video as well, I saw it in Foxboro 94. The best audio version of this song by far is on the live disc of double album Ummagumma. Listen to that disc sometime, 4 mind blowing tunes in a row, we all tripped to this back in the day. Early Floyd is a total trip, fan since 1969, everything before Dark Side is leading up to that album, we thought they peaked on Meddle BUT then the next 4 albums are as great and for many, even better. Please do Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun, video from the Pompeii film and audio from Ummagumma. Trip out indeed, their music always had that special quality to transport you into a different audio reality and alter your consciousness. When it is over, voila, you are the latest to have been under the Pink Floyd spell! Enjoy. 🔥🎵🎸🎤🎹🎻🎷🎶🔥

'Arnold Layne' (about a perv that steals ladies undergarments off clotheslines) and 'See Emily Play' (about mental illness) are the early Floyd singles/commercial success. Neither was included on the Piper at the Gates of Dawn album. The full Syd immersion though has to be 'Bike' . . . madness, I've got a bike, you can ride it if you like It's got a basket, a bell that rings And things to make it look good I'd give it to you if I could, but I borrowed it The follow on album featured one song from Syd. His last contribution "Jugband Blues". The lyrics are a bit haunting: It's awfully considerate of you to think of me here And I'm most obliged to you for making it clear That I'm not here And I never knew the moon could be so big And I never knew the moon could be so blue And I'm grateful that you threw away my old shoes And brought me here instead dressed in red And I'm wondering who could be writing this song I don't care if the sun don't shine And I don't care if nothing is mine And I don't care if I'm nervous with you I'll do my loving in the winter And the sea isn't green And I love the queen And what exactly is a dream And what exactly is a joke . . . As for Saucerful of Secrets, listen to the live version on the Ummagumma album. A MUST listen . . .

Great reaction - thank you! This was a (live, but not live!) performance for a Belgian TV show in Dutch, hence the strange spelling of Pink "Floid". Astronomy Domine was one of Syd Barrett's songs (opening track off their first album) but, as this clip was performed in 1968, Syd had already departed, hence you can see a very youthful David Gilmour miming Syd's vocal and guitar. Even at this early stage, you can hear what the band was destined to become...

If you want to listen to some really superb lesser mentioned early Floyd tracks I strongly suggest these , I’m sure you will love them : The first two are really serene, beautiful slow ones : Julia Dream and Cirrus Minor. The third one will really hit you hard, and I think you will hardly believe it, you need to turn the volume up to eleven for this one - The Nile Song.

Sadly, you wont get much views with pre Dark Side material. But the Pink Floyd fans will appreciate for sure! Regarding this video, I'm pretty sure it was either at the very end of 1968 or somewhere in 1969. Syd composed this song and there's videos of that song with him. Another thing is most TV appearances from this era had the band shadow play the album track. This track seems to me to be the remasterized version from the late 90's. There's a live version of that song with David playing and singing from the disc 2 of Ummagumma and it's also great. The best video of them from that era when you can see them live will always be Live at KQED San Francisco. They played a 1hr set and I love that performance so much, especially Cymbaline and Green is the color. David's guitar truely shines since they always jammed a bit live and it shows really well where the progression would take them to Echoes , Obscured by Clouds and, eventually, Dark Side.

If you want to hear early live Pink Floyd then check out Interstellar Overdrive. It was featured in the 1967 movie "Tonight Let's All Make Love in London." Psychedelic Pink Floyd were so unique, basically playing live to light shows, that even the Beatles went to see them at the 14 hour Technicolour Dream in Alexandra Park. Pink Floid is a typo! Their original name was the "Architectural Ad-dabs" as they were studying Architecture. Then Syd Barrett (Camberwell College of Art) joined and they became the Psychedelic Pink Floyd.

The music is most important, but yes, Stacey, you must also SEE Syd Barrett in action. Check out the official "Arnold Layne" video, or the Floyd's live appearance on "The Look of the Week", both from 1967.

Syd Barrett (vocals/ guitar) wrote the track and did the lead vocals w/ Richard Wright (keyboards/ vocals) in 1967 from Pink Floyd's debut album 'Piper at the Gates of Dawn'... But Syd Barrett's mental illness led to his being ousted from Pink Floyd by 1968 (He was becoming erratic and couldn't perform live without tripping out... and couldn't remember songs he was writing anymore) David Gilmour (guitar/ vocals) was brought in in 1968 to help Pink Floyd w/ live gigs but the intent was for him to learn the songs until they could let Syd Barrett go (They tried to get him help but Barrett would not go to see medical professionals to assess his mental illness) Nick Mason (drums) recalled that once Syd was gone, playing gigs became fun again, without having to worry about Syd having a breakdown or 'spacing out' in the middle of their sets. Yes, u are correct - that is David Gilmour in this 1968 TV promo who lip synced to the studio track. Pink Floyd would release their 2nd album 'Saucerful of Secrets' in 1968 w/ David Gilmour in the band (Some of Syd Barrett's contributions were included on the record) The problem was... Syd Barrett was the band's main songwriter. With him gone, the burden fell on Roger Waters (bass) and Richard Wright (keyboards) to learn to write original songs... David Gilmour was not an accomplished songwriter at the time and would mostly contribute music and work on production... Roger Waters recalled that lyrics were not something anyone was eager to do, so he assumed the role of Pink Floyd's lyricist. However, it became apparent that the band couldn't come up w/ a remarkable single like 'See Emily play' ... or 'Arnold Layne' (which Syd Barrett wrote) ... Singles like "Apples and oranges"... 'Paint box'... 'Julia dream'... were not as successful. So, Pink Floyd had to find a new set of musical parameters to make records and focus of making full albums and not commercial singles, which defined their career. Syd Barrett was able to record and release 2 solo albums in 1970 - 'The Madcap laughs' and 'Barrett'... David Gilmour produced those records and called making them a 'nightmare' because Syd could not remember his songs... So, they would record his ideas and bring him in to do vocals once they were done... Gilmour said that Syd didn't seem to struggle to find words or a melody - they came naturally to him. After Syd walked out of one too may gigs while playing in 1970, he was done... He disappeared for years.

There's a wonderful video of PF with Syd doing this song - you have to see Syd do his 'wa wa wa wa wa wa wa wa' bit with his arms up wearing a glorious psychedelic shirt (made for him by a fan, I think..) It's iconic! To get to know Syd more, you might like to take a dive in to his best (IMO) solo album after leaving PF - The Madcap Laughs, which is one of my favourite albums of any artist of all time. Every song is amazing. Not everyone gets them, but I think you probably would.

finally i find us listening to something of syds creation. just to recap... although we love dave, there was another guitarist/ but singer/song writer and he was the face and lead of the band. The Pink Floyd journey should always be done in order... lest you miss part of the magic. If you really want a glimpse listen to several species of small furry animals gathered together in a cave and groovin with a pict... it is off a double album set which featured live recordings along with studio works. You can see or rather, hear... a direction of music that you will not be able to make much sense of, likely... but that fits into the whole experience as though if missing would be an experience incomplete. More simply put, there was a musical experience over many decades which brought great minds and talents together into this group, including even a saxaphone player that seldom gets included while being such an integral part that he deserves our attention. we have heard him many times on your stream already. Pink Floyd brought music and electronics together with a few visuals for effect... but more over, they found some amazing sounds along the way. To follow it in order is to hear them mature as well as their music.

I'm going to give you something that I have never seen anybody else react to. There is a French Avant Garde movie called La Vallée, also known as Obscured by Clouds which Pink Floyd did the soundtrack to. It was released as 'Obscured by Clouds" and is a great stand alone album but you should see it in the original French language movie to really understand it. It is Avant Garde and can be pretty 'obscure' (used with intention) at times. I love the album but as I said you should see the movie. Who knows, you could be the first to post a reaction to this movie. Their music has appeared in movies but this was a complete soundtrack. It is about archaeologists going into the New Guinea outback to a region (again) obscured by clouds that has never been seen even by satellites due to permanent cloud cover. There are reports of totally unknown tribes living up there and these people set off to find them. As they travel they also begin to revert to more primitive versions of themselves. There is a love affair (it's French) and a fair degree of nudity (again French) for the time so any reaction would need careful editing or blurring in some areas but I think you just might enjoy this look at the Avant Garde in both music and film from back in the day.

The album OBSCURED BY CLOUDS, is great, but the movie doesn,t do it justice. They don,t really play the entire songs and it,s usually in the background, very disappointing, and it,s in French with English subtitles, but the album Is Definitely worth listening to, not a bad song on it,

Stacey has started her venture into the Syd era with one of his space rock pieces. Not a bad place to start, since it was Track 1 on their 1967 debut LP, even though Syd was no longer in the group when they lip synched this video in 1968. Keep looking. Syd is in several videos. My favorite among them is the live version of "Interstellar Overdrive" from the film Tonight Let's all Make Love in London. And don't forget to listen to Track 2 from that album, Syd's ode to his house cat called "Lucifer Sam."

In these early days Pink Floyd were a kind of 'house band in a music club, where they could experiment with soundscapes, lights etc. Storm Thorgerson, school friend & designer of the Dark Side Of The Moon album cover was associated with this period knowing Syd & Rodger Waters.

This was the album that saw the transition from Syd Barrett to David Gilmour. 1968 A Saucerful of Secrets. Syd was dropping way to much LSD. Half the tracks have Gilmour and the other half Barrett. This song had Barrett but he is not in the video, David is in the video but you will notice he is not singing and they also do not even show him playing guitar, as he was not on this track at all. The guy you see singing and playing guitar is actually Keyboardist Rick Wright, who does actually sing the song along with Syd Barrett on the album. There was for a brief time that the band had both David and Syd, but there are no recordings with all five. I believe i read that David wrote and recorded with the band on days that Barrett did not show up, which was quite a lot.
