And this is why the count is supposed to be complete before they finish closing. Glad everything worked out great!
@honestlyno4240

When I worked in L&D we did counts before each closure but for sure before the skin closure. That last count would mean someone either tossed it or it fell in the run off pouches on the side. That is why you watch and while the scrub tech counts each one. The nurses also had to scrub so I always kept a watch on everything. I will say the good thing is they could be fairly certain it wasn’t inside if they counted correctly. Eye contact very important to watch it being counted. I was lucky we had to learn how to scrub in and those scrub techs were tough. I mean we didn’t have one all the time we were tested and quizzed on all the surgeries in L&D. Very grateful for that I always knew the instruments and where we were in each count. When I was scrubbed in it was the same thing I kept an eye on everything even in an emergency. If it was urgent usually we could get a count done quickly prior to starting since we knew what was going on if not we had a portable scan prior to leaving the OR, or if the count was off. I kept track on my scrubs or paper as well. Yes in the old days I wrote VS or a quick note no Identifying information. If you decide to have a repeat C/S next time it is so much smoother. You already are hurting and exhausted and after that long then a C/S the recovery is so much harder. Straight going in you get a spinal, feel some pressure getting baby out which is uncomfortable but no where near like labor and your done. Recovery is also so much better.
@Goddess2018
@Goddess2018 Жыл бұрын
@honestlyno4240 absolutely. From a legal standpoint, it's not "retained" if the counts aren't finished. You shouldn't have to put a person back under because you can't find something. It's traumatic to say the least. They even said it was the worse part of their birth story! The surgical team obviously wasn't 100% sure because they called the anesthesiologist back. It was a policy where I used to work because of the legal implications and it's just best practice. We're supposed to treat the whole patient. Protecting them from added emotional trauma is part of that.
@Goddess2018
@Goddess2018 Жыл бұрын
@honestlyno4240 One more thing, nurses that can scrub are always better circulators! It's great that you got the knowledge and get to work on both sides of the drapes. Just more fun to be had!
@kiraragner6049

They would have. They must have just counted it again to make sure and counted one less cause they got stuck together or one fell somewhere, literally anything. You count the amount multiple times because of how big the health risk is if you don’t ensure all the sponges, tools, anything in the patient are out.
@Goddess2018
@Goddess2018 Жыл бұрын
@kiraragner6049 they obviously didn't or they would not need have a need to call back anesthesia. Opening count, closing count and final count. Final should be complete before last stich or staple. They probably had a good closing count and just assumed final would be fine, until they couldn't find the sponge. They more than likely didn't believe it was retained and didn't want to open her back up, but you do what's best for the patients if you can't find it. All this is alleviated by having counts be complete before they finish closing.

Oml, so scary. I heard this happened to a young woman in the town I visited on holiday. A woman gave birth to her child via c section, but they left something in there and sewed her up and they were so rushed for the next birth or something that they didn't bother looking for the missing item on their checklist that they couldn't find(cuz in her country most hospitals encourage for mother's to get C-section births as it brings in more money). She ended up having really bad abdominal pain that didn't go away 5 days after birth and only got unbearable - at which point after multiple visits they decided to believe her and scan her and found that the surgeon had left something in her(I forgot if it was a cotton swab or glove) and she had to go for a follow up surgery and take meds for it. And the worst thing - court cases against big hospitals like that don't end well for the person that sues where she's from, so she got a small amount of settlement money (her hospital fee and both surgery paid for and a bit left over) and the doctor got disciplinary training r something.

Usually we call for a portable scan prior to digging in to see if it is in there while we are looking. You should have already had at least 2 counts prior to the skin closure so If the last one was off you could be fairly sure it wasn’t in there. Anesthesia come in to see what the heck was taking so long. Probably went to recovery and wondered what was up. When I worked L&D anesthesia didn’t leave until the pt was in recovery.

Omg. This happened to me - sort of. I had an emergency C-section & it was so rushed that the doctor and nurses forgot to count the surgical tools prior to the surgery. They didn’t realize this until AFTER I was sewn back up so there was chaos for about 20 minutes while they ran to go get the portable X-ray machine to X-ray me and make sure they didn’t leave any tools in my body. The thought of them having to open me back up to get out a tool or a sponge if it was left behind had me panicking so much the anesthesiologist gave me a good dose of something that chilled me wayyyyyy out. In the meantime, my husband had gone to be with our baby, and my in-laws and older daughter all held my baby before me because it took so long for them to take me to recovery. 🥺 I’m absolutely grateful that there wasn’t anything left inside of me, but the negligence was mind boggling.

If you decide to have a second child in the future I would highly recommend going with a midwife instead of the hospital route. They have much better bedside manner, and in my experience actually listened to my concerns and took their time to help me with all of my symptoms and communicate to me what was going on at all times. I also only had myself, my husband, and my midwives in the birthing suite so I felt much more safe and comfortable not having to worry about men I didn’t know being around me in such a vulnerable position. I’m so sorry you had that experience, it was extremely unprofessional of them to behave that way and I hope it wasn’t too traumatic for you guys and sweet baby girl ❤

After giving birth here I 1000% understand why she only delivers there. Everyone is amazing. They communicated with us every step of the way. Not only what the plan was but why that was the plan. They asked if I understood and if I had any questions. Once I asked my questions or said I didn't have any, they made sure to ask if I was good to move forward. I was so lucky to have such a great experience. It sucks that it is so bad for so many.

I feel your pain Mal. I had a bad experience too. 2 month later, I still have flash back. I was induced with balloon overnight with baby having irregular heart beats. Then next day I was induced more with medicine(baby still having up and down heart beats) and was told I won't be in labor till night time. So I sent my husband away to run errands. The medicine got my blood pressure super high and baby still unstable) Once he left not too long, I was in active labor(water broke, 7 cm dilated) and I was in so much pain alone and scared. Roughly 2 hr later I called him back. Got epidural twice(1 failed), cervical check(baby still high and 7cm dilated still). Another 2 hrs passed, still 7cm and baby still high up with no changes. My blood pressure and baby heartbeat have no improvement. We had an emergency c section. During surgery, the doctor was about to stitch me back up, till the anesthesiologist saw blood coming out from my urine bag. They found out they accidentally cut my bladder. During that time the painkiller worn off and I was feeling everything. I hear everyone running around and the doctor was talking to a urologist. Stitched me up 40 mins later, had to keep my urine bag for 7 days, get a CT scan on the bladder.... but my baby girl is healthy and I survived the whole experience. But I have a bad postpartum depression now.

I just finished up a rotation at a hospital, and here’s a new fear unlocked: one of the nights a woman went to the hospital in labor and wanted an epidural, but the pharmacy didn’t have any made so the doctors were trying to call the graveyard pharmacist to make some, but she had stepped out of the pharmacy to do something and no one could get ahold of her for a bit. They found several large abscesses in my abdomen as well as blood clots in my lungs. It took 3 surgery and about 2.5 months to recover before i was able to bond with and care for my son. It was truly awful and ill never do it again. Im glad yours wasn't as bad but childbirth is scary!

Sorry that happened to you. My mom ended up laboring for 26 hours even though they knew she couldn't have a baby vaginally. The on call doctor said they'd try even though it was impossible. Ending up, causing her a horrific amount of unnecessary pain. Then they kept refusing to let my mom see me because it was nighttime. So she snuck me out of the nursery and caused a lockdown. When a nurse found me with my mother and yelled at her, she said she was done listening to stupid people who couldn't even read her chart. She said the first part sucked but her sneaking me out and sleeping in her arms that night made it a wonderful adventure.

I feel ya honey.... after the birth of my first child, I had the worst odor and was clueless thinking it was normal after a birth after I went back to my 6 week post birth appointment the doctor found a bunch of gauze sutured in me from my episiotomy and birth. Was so disgusting. So blessed I didn't get an infection. He did put me on antibiotics to be cautious.

I labored for 22 hours!! Half of that time I didn’t even realize I was having real contractions! I thought it was another false labor moment lol

Oh my goodness! That must have been terrifying! I can understand how bad it is if they lose a sponge, since my dog died because they left one in after surgery.

Worst part for me for my first birth - the massage to my lower abdomen to induce clotting since nothing else made me clot after the placenta was removed. Worst part of my second birth - getting stuck at 7cm dilated with intense labor and sitting up for the epidural. Ended up with spinal headaches because a small amount of the spinal fluid leaked out during. I wasn't able to be completely still and bent forward as far as they wanted at the time because um labor.

Yes, that is protocol in any surgery, they know how many sponges going in, count and count and count again. With the little suturing they did, probably not there, but they had to find it. They were following protocol, not asking you in on the search is also protocol. It was not in you that was the outcome. Having the bases covered is normal(calling the dr back ahead of time is also protocol.)
