A good disclaimer on videos like this is that tire pressures are also a possible factor in the blowouts, not necessarily the country of origin. Not that I am defending tires made in China. WestLake tires, made in China, are some of the worst tires I've come across in my 20+ years being a mechanic. All I am saying is that the tire manufacturers aren't the only ones at fault in a blowout.

Tires have a life span of 6 years from manufacturing regardless of mileage because as they age they get brittle and Crack and can start to separate internally just due to age, this is with a high quality tire, cheap tires often have terrible weather performance, and are much more prone to blowouts which can be deadly. It's quite literally a balloon under your car, having pride about using dangerous tires is nothing but nonsense. Your "buddys" experience means nothing when we have sample sizes in the millions of cars not just you and your buddy's.

I've been using Chinese tires on my jeeps for well over 10 years, never any safety issues! Most tire failures are directly due to lack of proper air pressure, lack of maintenance, improper installation, improper application to use, and flat out neglect. I wouldn't put them on my 78 Porche 911 due to my driving style in that car, but for my 2 Cherokees, and Comanche cheap tires are fine; these vehicles never handled well, eat tires up well under 30k miles, etc. If it's competently installed, used appropriately for application, is maintained and kept inflated according to THE TIRE MANUFACTURER'S RECOMMENDATIONS FOR LOAD, you will be fine, but probably listening to tire noise and not riding in the lap of luxury. For the record, I was in the motorcycle business for 18 years. I personally installed thousands of tires in that career. People never cease to amaze me in the sheer neglect and lack of concern for their tires. Cheng-Shin was and is a common tire, but in the 80s none carried anything other than a "S" speed rating. They fit on a lot of bikes capable of nearly twice the speed rating! A responsible installer won't install a tire under the minimum tire requirements for a vehicle. Tire ratings seem to be an unheard of sales point for tires in USA!
@toriless

Porche 911 uses High Performance anyway, I think Y or Z rating, I only need W.

@bluedogsalvage5246 2 жыл бұрын
@@toriless it uses H rated, no need to waste money buying Z rated. This year is not a 150+ mph car! In reality due to our low speed limits, even H rated is not needed, but you wouldn't want to sell a set of non-spec tires to someone. Speed ratings only have to do with the tire's ability to cool at a sustained speed @ max load, it has nothing to do with traction. Higher speed rating have lower mileage life due to the thinner tread of those tires.

@thesmellofbacon7595 2 жыл бұрын
Not really. The standards exist, yes, but cheap tires simply do not claim to have good saftly ratings. And consumers have no idea what they're buying. For example, beyond getting tires that aren't the same size as OEM, there are two other standards listed right next to tire size. Load index, and speed rating. For Load index you have to get tires that will withstand the weight of the car, passengers, and any cargo that may be loaded, AND account for more weight being shifted to one side during cornering. Speed index is self explanatory. If you go above the speed they are rated for, the tires may lose grip or even explode. These ratings also do not guarantee anything if you leave the tires out in the sun for months and they dry out, manufacturers are not responsible for you not taking care of your tires. But yes, there are also just garbage tires on the market. Tread patterns that make no sense for any weather being sold as "all season".
@freeassange5151
@freeassange5151 2 жыл бұрын
@@thesmellofbacon7595 Thank you for your in-depth response. I guess from a safety point of view l imagine that there is a minimum standard. This however is based on the consumer standard in Australia which doesn’t allow a tyre to be sold without a minimum standard of safety.

I think a very important element to good tire wear is always maintaining correct tire pressure. Put extra air creates bulges. Low air pressure is extra wear on tire and engine. And I always rotate tires every 5,000 miles. I absolutely swear by my Michelin's. I got 175,000 miles out of them and yes, that's correct. Even ask the tire factory where I got them. I think tyre maintenance is far more critical than price or brand. If your tyre is under inflated or over inflated, the tyre isn't able to maintain the correct contact patch on the road which leads to vehicle instability under heavy breaking or cornering. Also, a under inflated tyre will heat up more which causes the tyre to delaminate internally leading to catastrophic failure.

I disagree. Although I’m talking about the uk here. The tyres are approved and Iv always gone for the cheapest. £50 a go. 14,000 miles. More expensive tyres can start at £90 and last 21,000. It’s clear to me that the cheap tyres win. And there graded better for noise and fuel efficiently. premium tyres are worse. Makes no sense to me but I never invested the grading system.

I've got some Hankook tires that are due for replacement. Still have plenty of tread left and I'd guess they have over 40k miles on them. They were on there when I got the truck 10 years/40k miles ago. I'm replacing them because they're just too old and the rubber is starting to crack. Marking says they were made in 2011 so I've waited long enough. Going to replace them with another set of Hankook. I'm pretty happy with how these have held up over all this time.

Bernie is not a libertarian. He's a socialist. Those two are at opposite ends economically (libertarians are for decentralized control, socialists are for centralized control) and opposite ends of the moral scale (libertarians are ethical hedonists, and socialists are ethical altruists). The only thing that makes them similar at all is their populism which is different depending on where you go. But Bernie being a populist doesn't make him favor a free market or anything else libertarian.

And you can find good tires at good prices. Shop around for deals and also check for any sales, rebates, and discounts. I got myself a good set of Michelin tires for my Grand Marquis for around $500 last year, complete with lifetime road hazard coverage as well as lifetime balance and rotation. I bought them during a 4th of July sale and got a military discount along with a $100 manufacturer rebate and further discounts by purchasing the tires using credit offered by the store, which also gave me 6 months of 0% interest on the loan, which I paid off within 4 months to ensure that I never have to pay interest.

I work at a tire shop and most people always buy the cheapest tires with a low speed rating and drive at 90 mph on the highway and then come back with a blowout and don’t understand that tires have different speed ratings. Then they actually buy the good tires that last longer. Moral of the story: spend the extra bucks on quality tires.

When I was a kid, my first car was an early 70's Ford pickup. I finally decided to treat myself to a brand new set of tires, and liked how the white letter Tiger Paws looked. They handled terribly. The truck couldn't corner anymore, no matter what air pressure I put in them... they'd roll and screech around any curves above 40mph. A buddy's dad gave me a used set of Goodyear Wranglers, and I gave away the Uniroyals, never looking back. The truck would corner nicely again. Hopefully URTPs perform better on economy cars. I didn't even know TigerPaws were still being made.

Not just cheap tire but look at the date, even if you have more than the legal level of tire tread tires are biodegradable over time. Unfortunately tires do not have the same shelf life that they once had because they no longer have lead in their rubber! So 5-6yrs toss them and buy new ones!
