Well, according to a 2002 interview for a magazine, Michael was asked about the "outbiding" Paul and the Beatles catalogue thing, he said this: "No, I didn't. He didn't bid for it. It was for sale and I liked it and I bought it. It's like buying a piece of art."

Michael Jackson was able to out-bid Paul McCartney for the rights to The Beatles catalog because of his massive success from 'Thriller' (and 'Off the wall') ... Paul McCartney had sold millions of records w/ The Beatles but he never truly got the fair dividends from record sales because the band had signed contracts before they became a phenomenon and got an unfair deal. Apple Corp. was The Beatles own record company in the 60's and it went through financial troubles after The Beatles split up in 1970 and the rights to The Beatles' catalog went up for auction in 1985... M.J. paid $47 Million for them. After the breakup of The Beatles in 1970, it took a few years for Paul McCartney to put together a new band called Wings and began actively touring in 1972 and he had scored a number of platinum-plus records in the 70's and played arenas and stadiums by 1980... but it was nowhere near what The Beatles sold... So, when the publishing rights went up for sale, Paul McCartney didn't have the substantial ca$h amount needed that M.J. could in 1985... McCartney even asked John Lennon's widow Yoko Ono to chip in for a bid. After M.J. bought The Beatles' publishing rights after following McCartney's own advice... Paul McCartney took that slight personally and never spoke to M.J. again... He was particularly upset when M.J. licensed The Beatles song 'Revolution' for a Nike shoe commercial.

MJ was first informed that the ATV/Beatles catalogue was up for sale in September 1984 by his attorney, John Branca, who had put together Jackson's earlier catalogue acquisitions. Warned of the competition he would face in buying such popular songs, Jackson remained resolute in his decision to purchase them. Branca approached McCartney's attorney to query whether the Beatle was planning to bid. The attorney stated he wasn't; it was "too pricey." According to Bert Reuter, who negotiated the sale of ATV Music for Holmes à Court, "We had given Paul McCartney first right of refusal but Paul didn't want it at that time." Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono had been contacted as well but also did not enter bidding and was said to be happy that MJ acquired the catalogue. >>> MJ is too nice for his cruel friends,and a savvy businessman man!✍🏽🎯💯

Paul did an interview where he explained the rift. While filming The Girl Is Mine, Michele asked for some financial advice. Paul said as soon as you are able, buy your own catalog of music because the jackals will swoop in and buy it out from under you. Tow years later, coming off of the thriller album, Michael could not buy his yet, so he bought the Beatles out from under Paul while he was getting the capital together to buy it himself. Paul asked Michael to sell it to him, and Michael wanted 3X what he paid for it. That's cold as hell.😢

When Jackson and McCartney were unable to make a joint purchase of the Beatles song’s rights, McCartney did not want to be the sole owner of the Beatles' songs, and did not pursue an offer on his own. Originally Jackson’s group left talks on the negotiations but in the end was able to outbid other entertainment companies at 48 million to finalize the deal after ten months.

The Beatles were given a small percentage of their publishing. It's the way it was done back then. Most bands want to be paid up front, instead of having the investment in the songs. Especially with Rock and Roll/Pop music, that was considered to not have long-term value. You put a song out. It is out of date as soon as it has its run. The Beatles' catalog was sold when the Beatles were splitting up and their money was tied up in the courts. Michael outbid Paul. Paul wanted to buy it jointly with Yoko since it was Lennon/McCartney. Yoko didn't want to offer what Paul thought they needed to offer. (Rumor is she told Michael what he needed to bid. She and son Sean were friends with Michael too and she thought she could control him easier than she could Paul.) Paul thought Michael paid way too much for the catalog. But it became like a work of art. Its value can be determined by what people will pay for it, more so than the income it will pull in. Paul and Sony came to a secret settlement. Most likely Paul owns it now, but Sony still does the publishing.
@Slamnationsbiscuit26 күн бұрын
I think the reason why they don't play it as much is because of the fallout between the two after Michael had bought all the Beatles songs out

Why is it funny as hell that Jackson bought the rights behind McCartney's back and then he made money off of songs that Paul and John or Paul himself created. Then, as for him getting the rights back, sure, after he's well into his seventies thirty years later. And, you find this funny? Morally, it's not wrong? Where is your integrity? The Beatles NEVER owned their own songs, it was never done that way. I never understood WHY the person who writes a song or creates anything, DOESN"T automatically own it. It wasn't right that PAUL had to get PERMISSON FROM and PAY Michael to perform his OWN songs in Paul's concerts. Paul even asked him for a raise after all the years, and Michael wouldn't. The thing is, guys, when the Beatles catalogue was available, because they were Lennon and McCartney songs, both Paul and Yoko had to decide on a bid for them. Paul suggested one and Yoko kept dragging her feet making a decision and meanwhile, Michael bought them out from under them...that hurt Paul. GUYS Michael and Paul couldn't buy them together, because the John Lennon estate was involved too through his widow Yoko. It could only be split between Paul and the Lennon estate. DID you guys know that Paul could do a PERFECT IMMITATION of Michael's speaking voice.
