The Wilson sisters father was my social studies teacher in junior high school. He used to play their music during class on a reel to reel tape machine. Proud father. Fortunate enough to see them play live in Seattle in the 70s

The grungy open catches everybody's ear, but the genius of the song is its bridge. That's where both sisters sing in harmony and it sets up the Zeppelinesque passages that lead the song out.

Nancy Wilson (the other one) is a very underrated guitarist. Probably because she was a female in the male dominated music industry. Hard rock started in the late 60’s/early 70’s with The Stones, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin

Heart did not 'sample' the riff, they heard the riff on Nazareth's record and made it their own (slightly different), because if you listen to both records, Heart's is better.
@DavidMartin-tc1gl6 күн бұрын
They also are big fans of Zeppelin and the drumming is almost an exact take of "Achilles Last Stand" and the riff is almost the same, also. Of course, they put their spin on it. I hear more Zeppellin than Nazareth. Who is to say where Zeppelin got it from?
@sebastianblack65066 күн бұрын
@@DavidMartin-tc1gl Yes, I remembered this fact and made an additional post mentioning Achilles. Quite frankly, Nazareth's recording was merely okay when compared to Zep and Heart's use of the riff.

Hard rock formed in the mid-to-late 1960's. Heart released their first album back in 1975, and hard rock was already established by then. Ann (brunette) & Nancy (blonde) were pioneers in the sense of female rockers as the focal point of the band. The 1960's had many female rock artists like Janis Joplin & Grace Slick that led the way for many female rockers of the 1970's, 1980's and through today.

When I bought the Album shortly after it was released my bro and I loved this song without knowing the story behind it. We just loved how it rocked out and Ann's vocals. If you watch the live versions you will appreciate the drummer more. Guitars were always first rate with the band. I saw Heart in concert 6 or 7 times and they were even better in concert than on their records. Led Zeppelin was a huge influence of Heart.
@gpxo114 күн бұрын
Their performance video of this song is a must see!! Watching the drummer wail and the searing guitars and also Ann Wilson singing-gotta check it out! Nazareth's first hit This Flight Tonight is what the riff is based on. Heart came out at about the same time Pat Benetar< Suzi Quatro and in 1980 Joan Jett and the group Blondie showing that women can rock out too!

Anne Wilson, the older sister, is on lead vocals... Nancy Wilson, the blonde, is on rhythm/ acoustic guitar + backing vocals... This was the original Heart line-up of: Roger Fisher (lead guitar), Steve Fossen (bass), Mike DeRosier (drums) and Howard Leese (lead guitar/Keyboards/ piano) ... Only Howard Leese was in Heart until the 90's when the band went on hiatus. Anne and Nancy Wilson are the only original members of Heart today... everyone else is a session player.

Part of the riff sounds similar, but it is in a different key I believe. The overall melody of Barracuda and This flight tonight are not even close to each other. This riff was around before Nazareth. Heart was inspired part of the riff, but Barracuda is really an organic piece of music. There was no copyright infringement and Heart never paid royalties to Nazareth or anyone else. They did not sample Nazareth.

Heart might have borrowed the galloping guitar riff from Nazareth however that type of riff goes way back long before Nazareth existed. I'm not sure of the first time it was used but it was integral to the Bonanza TV show theme which was in 1961. Everything has been done before. Musicians borrow from others all the time. Led Zeppelin used this riff in Immigrant song in 1970. Heart was influenced by Led Zeppelin so this song could have been influenced by them as well. Zeppelin was influenced by many artist before them including Willie Dixon and Muddy Waters. The drum intro from Rock and Roll was borrowed from Little Richard's song Keep a Knockin in 1957. Other drummers used this drum intro as well in the 50s. It's all been done before.

While the first few bars are identical to Nazareth’s “This Flight Tonight”, the songs are definitely different from that point on. “The ‘chugging’ rhythm technique used in “Barracuda” and in Nazareth’s “This Flight Tonight” is more or less a convention of heavy rock guitar playing. It's worth noting that neither riff is drastically far off from Led Zeppelin’s “Communications Breakdown” or Black Sabbath’s “Children of the Grave,” each of which predate the Nazareth version of "This Flight Tonight." Nancy Wilson in an interview said it’s not uncommon for musicians to get inspiration from other sources, including other music. The exception to other examples is that Heart always owned up to using the same opening riff.
