"Smooth" is a hit song by Santana featuring Rob Thomas, released in 1999 as part of Santana's album *Supernatural*. The track became an instant classic, blending rock, Latin, and pop influences, and marked a major comeback for the legendary guitarist Carlos Santana. Rob Thomas, the lead singer of Matchbox Twenty, delivers a passionate vocal performance that perfectly complements Santana's fiery guitar work. The song’s lyrics describe a passionate love affair, with the phrase "Give me your heart, make it real" encapsulating the intense emotions involved. "Smooth" topped the charts for several weeks, becoming one of the most successful songs of the late 1990s, and won multiple Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year. Its infectious melody, memorable chorus, and seamless fusion of genres helped the song resonate with a wide audience, cementing it as one of Santana's signature tracks and a defining moment in both his career and Rob Thomas's.

Santana did not want to do this song originally, he felt it was too similar to his early hits. The song writer contacted Rob Thomas, when Santana found out that Rob was married to a Latina, he accepted. Rob's wife is the one dancing in the apartment

Rob Thomas wrote this song and pitched to Carlos to record. First Carlos said … your lady is Latina, right? Wink wink. Then he said I’ll record it only IF, you do the vocals. And the girl that is in the apartment and dancing in front of Carlos, is Rob Thomas’ wife. Fun Fact: the lead guitarist from Journey, Neal Schon, used to skip school at 15 to play and be part of Carlos Santana band, along with Greg Rollie. Then they split, to form Journey.

You don’t see Santana on polls about guitarists, but he has the full respect of his peers. Fenom, you nailed it regarding Ernie Isley. In the early/middle sixties, he had a huge influence on a young guitarist in their band, some guy named Jimi..

Cory: "They only had 8 songs on the whole album!" 😥 Ollie was right about Santana too! There might be early recordings of him playing in Cali when Hendrix shook the stage with his guitar. I've always read only rave reviews about Santana's guitar magic! Before he had acquired any fame he was already a prodigy on his guitar. "ONE OF MY TOP FAVORITE SONGS EVER!!" THANX GUYS!!!

Carlos is an AMAZING guitarist! He's definitely a legend. Go listen to Black Magic Woman from Santana. He has a great unique sound. Plus, you mentioned he worked with CLAPTON! Do you think the man they called "God" for his guitar mastery would work with a hack guitarist? Also, I love that this band is like a melting pot with Latin guys, black guys and white lead singer. I LOVE it. It's how bands were in the 70s, like The Doobie Bros., Rufus & Chaka, KC and The Sunshine Band.
