2 years ago I started having intense pain in my left knee. Went to the doctor, he asked a couple of questions, squeezed my knee then told me I had to have surgery. I ignored him, started Keto and intermittent fasting. After losing about 15 pounds, from 315 to 300 my knees have never felt better, no need for surgery!! I've set a goal to lose 50 lbs by summer, I'm now at 285, and I turn 60 in May. Feeling great!! Thank you, thank you!!

When first started keto with a 36 hour fast ( I had never fasted this long before) my blood glucose dropped to 50! My spouse thought I was going to die. It I felt great. So alert and energetic. Ketones were high. Now a year and a half later my BG is stable never dropping below 74 and my ketones are pretty stable as well reading .05 to .07 . I was severely insulin resistant.

I wouldn’t say severely insulin resistant if it only took 36 hours to get your glucose down to 50. When did your fasting glucose get lower. I’m 4 months in and my fasting morning glucose is still just over 100. Tried 20 hr fasts. Nothing longer. Did this to back away from the prediabetes level A1C. I was .1 away.

Thank you Thomas! Now I learned that these terms are misused really often. "Fat adaptation is fuel utilisation. Keto adaptation is the adaptation to utilizing ketones as signal divices and higher levels of energy." ... "Keto adaptation is where your body has seen ketons in the blood for so long that it knows how to react on them. Because they are not just a fuel, they are a signaling device (...) means when the brain recognizes the ketones they can bounce a signale off of them to trigger different metabolic things. (...) Basically it unlocks more of your genes for you. It unlocks more of your genetic code so you can rebuild tissue so you can have more stem cells." This is so to the point and really motivating.

Thank you for this video. Not enough experts are talking about what metabolically happens when you have been eating very low carb for years. I have been keto for 5 years and high fat carnivore for the past year. My ketones range between 0.2-0.7. My insulin is less than 5 and my A1C remains in the low 5s. I’m continuing to lean out and have loads of energy. My fasted BG is higher than others eating this way but I have chronic pain which keeps my cortisol and so BG higher.

I tried wearing a CGM for a couple of weeks 2 months ago just to see how I react to carbs, and I don't even get big BG spikes anymore, nor I get big KETO levels/spikes unless I do 48 hrs + fasting; I never feel tired nor hungry, and my weight doesn't fluctuate for more than 2 lb no matter how much or how little I eat nor how much or how little exercises I do, which I think is a good thing.

Fact check on muscle glycogen: Muscle cell glycogen appears to function as an immediate reserve source of available glucose for muscle cells. Other cells that contain small amounts use it locally, as well. As muscle cells lack glucose-6-phosphatase, which is required to pass glucose into the blood, the glycogen they store is available solely for internal use and is not shared with other cells. This is in contrast to liver cells, which, on demand, readily do break down their stored glycogen into glucose and send it through the blood stream as fuel for other organs. So no, muscle glycogen does not go back into the blood stream or to the liver to be utilized.

I started watching Thomas’ videos during lockdown and I started keto then. I lost a ton of weight but then I fell off the wagon and gained it back. (Not ketos fault lol any diet can have rebound if you go too hard too fast too long). I’ve been back on it 6 weeks. But the thing is, I do it because it makes me feel good, and curbs my appetite. No diet is a magic bullet for weight loss. You want to lose weight, eat at a calorie deficit and don’t forget to do maintenance phases to get into equilibrium with your new setting point. But the other benefits of keto are why it’s been the most successful for me personally.

I know this is a couple of years old and I don't know if you'll still monitor or reply to comments. I have a couple of questions: When you state that "keto-adaptation is when we've been in ketosis for so long that the body is responding to the presence of ketones in the blood differently" and later "our body knows how to react to them" "to trigger different metabolic things" and some examples you gave were around rebuilding tissue and making more stem cells - what else do we need to know about this process? Is this the main reason we want to be ketone adapted - for regenerative (staying as youthful as possible) purposes? Wouldn't we want to be BOTH fat AND ketone adapted - and is this achieved by keeping our carb intake very low (or even zero) AS WELL AS by participating in low-intensity endurance type of activities?

I'm wondering if I take them, will they technically break my fast as some of them do have some calories. I also don't want to tear up my stomach eating them with no food and make myself miserable. I take fish oil, a one a day multivitamin, turmeric pill, collagen pills, and tribulus. I usually have a whey protein shake and fiber supplement throughout the day as well, but I know they're no nos. I'm still going to drink my apple cider vinegar in the morning. I'm more worried about the pill supplements. Altogether it's probably only between 30 to 50 calories in the whole pile. Should I do without or go ahead and take them?

Meh. Too confusing without a graphic timeline or something. Also, it is confusing because there are too many "experts" defining terms as they go. I believe that the best source of terminology and definitions are Phinney and Volek and "The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living." Dr. Phinney's research revealed that "keto adaptation" requires 12 weeks for most, with the final step being the normalization of blood lactic acid levels. Dr. Volek's FASTER study set the bar of "fat adaptation" at that one+ year level, primarily via the RQ. I have not seen any scientific reference suggesting that "brain adaptation to ketones" improves or changes after that initial 12 week time frame. So now I guess I have to open up these reference links...

I've been STRICT keto since January 1, but I'm the only one in my family who does keto. I no longer crave carbs, but I know that sooner or later I'll be forced to have carbs. I'm aiming for fat adaptation, so I still have a couple weeks to go. I'm worried that when I'm forced to eat carbs for a meal, it'll reset my fat adaptation phase!

You won't reset anything if you live a healthy life and have a diet which promotes insulin sensitivity, e.g. Mediterrean diet.

Excellent topic! Great presentation! The only soft spot for me was at about 6:30: what is happening when muscle glycogen loads up but fat is being used for fuel?! The muscles WON'T use the locally stored glycogen for fuel?! Does it just stay there?! I always thought the muscle glycogen provided the advantage of INSTANT RESPONSE CAPABILITY...because, when you gotta move, you gotta move, like, NOW...Doesn't unused sugar end up getting stored as fat? I'm thinking I might end up with...fatty muscles...hehehe...

Waaaaa... You missed a BIG LINK in telling us WHEN/HOW we are in one or the other? We get to both by eating Low Carb... So, since Keto is more advanced does that mean we simply "eat even less" Carbs to get into Ketosis? Fat adapted allows us simply to eat "more" Carbs? Is that the only difference between the two? So, eat less than 50g of Carbs and we can get into Ketosis, but more we would still be able to be fat adapted depending of course?

You can take too much of anything. Too much water can kill you. As long as what you're taking goes well together without interactions, and you're taking an appropriate amount, you will be good with all 457 of your supplements.

@@FirstLast-bn1mx Well sometimes an ingredient in one thing, may interact with an ingredient in another in an unfavorable way. For instance some ingredients may potentiate or even lessen the effect of another ingredient. What I do first is go to Google and type in "Drug interaction checker" and you can add different types of drugs, or supplements to a list and then it will run them through and tell you if they interact negatively with one another. The only issue I've found is that many times they don't have every type of supplement. It's mostly for prescribed medicine, but they do have some supplements listed. I take a ton of supplements like you, and I've never had an issue, but sometimes supplements will even interact with prescribed medicine too. Just always try to research everything you can about a supplement before you take it, and you'll be fine. Well, I wrote quite the response, and now it's time to go take my 457 supplements 😂 ✌️

Just a question! You say we have to go through this cycles so we burn fat efficiently but once the body learns how to use fat does it forgot how to use carbs? Or can it optimise to remember both? Thanks

I enjoy your videos (for me less technical and more practical is better). Thanks. I have recently started eating keto (3 weeks in). I have a lingering question about exercising. You mention in the video that endurance athletes may be fat adapted. Don't endurance athletes mainly spend their time working out in an anaerobic state, so they are mainly using carbs for energy? If a person wants to burn fat, should they do work light work outs in an aerobic state. I am trying to figure out how to exercise to optimize burning fat. Thanks for your help. (to anybody who'd like to help me out)

So, there's different topic that should be talked about like how long does it take for you to LOSE your fat adaptation, and how cycling carbs affects getting to fat adaptation. In the beggining i thought i would be the 3months (average) non stop but with this video seems like it doesn't seem to be that way and that would kinda help more people to try it.

I did carnivore for Jan Feb 2020. I started keto jan 2021. Both times, when my blood first showed ketones, I felt amazing. Clear minded, calm, almost euphoric for about three days. Then it goes away and I become bloated, hungry (even at 4000 calories at the right macro ratio) and really cranky. I think I'm not fat adapted right?

The human body is far in advance of the science, which on weight loss and insulin control has changed in the last 30 years and will probably change again in the next 30 years. Science is a way of trying to explain what we think is going on with nature, and the reason it changes is as technology allows us to measure things more and derive new theories. There is no wrong or right, there are just theories which change as more research is carried out. These principles of Ketosis and Fat adapted are both ways to get to the same objective. I wouldn't get too upset about who says what.

I have been using HyperKeto for around 4 months now. I'm happy with the product, but I'm not sure if it's for me. For one, I don't know how much of a difference this is making in my weight loss and I am still struggling with my diet, so it might just be a waste of money.
