Endgame Thor was the direct continuation of Ragnarok and Love and Thunder is the same. If he didn't want to be dragged around this way and that he should've stepped up and done his job properly and kept continuity from Dark World. He could've trained himself in acting more or do literally anything else that could've helped him be as praised as hiddleston was for his Loki. I'd like the Disney directors to stop feeling that 'subverting expectations' is a good idea for Marvel and Star Wars films and just make something original and good. Constantly pulling the rug out from under the audience works once but more and more it is tiresome and frustrating.
@Tyler_W
@Tyler_W Жыл бұрын
"Subverting expectations" and pulling the rug out from under the audience only works when you actually have a meaningful point to make with it and when you can do it without undermining the characters in the story. It can be done. It's just really hard to do well with established characters. That's why Game of Thrones (mostly) works as a subversion of high fantasy, because it's being done with original characters (which is one of many reasons why Rings of Power will be trash).
@mattoreo5854
@mattoreo5854 Жыл бұрын
@@Tyler_W yep. Subversion only works when the thing you're giving the audience is BETTER than the thing they were expecting. The reverse of that only leads to disappointment. The movie Glass (2019 I think) is a great example of this (the disappointment side of things I mean)

@mattoreo5854 Жыл бұрын
@@Xoulrath_ overall I liked the movie, but glass kept foreshadowing and building up to a skyscraper fight but TWIST! The final fight is actually just in the yard of the hospital. That is subverting expectations in a bad way. The setup expectation (skyscraper fight) is better than the subversion (Hospital yard fight). The story itself I enjoyed, but it's like them setting up a gourmet meal and then getting kraft mac and cheese. I love kraft mac and cheese, but when expecting something superior, it's disapointing. (The ending also doesn't hold up, security camera footage would be swept under the rug and dismissed as CGI. And thats not how viral videos work, you dont post a video and then literally everyone gets notified immedietly, but the ending doesn't have to do with the main topic of this comment). Like I said, I like the movie Glass, but I think my favorite part was the begining seeing David Dunn fighting the Beast, and the last act of the movie was weak, not bad (in isolation), but a disapointment due to the subversions of expectations. If M Night didn't feel the need to try and "subvert" audiences expectations, then the first two acts would have just built up to the yard fight, forget the meaningless skyscraper, and it wouldn't have been disapointing. Sorry I rambled a bit long, but I just wanted to make sure you understood what I meant. I'm not saying that the marketing was deceptive or anything, just that the movie put in a needless red herring which would have been more exciting than what we got. Love the whole trilogy, but Glass was disapointing on first watch
@Xoulrath_
@Xoulrath_ Жыл бұрын
@@mattoreo5854 then you read way too much into the story. I never once expected the fight to leave the yard. The skyscraper scene to me looked like an endgoal that wasn't going to be made, not by the heroes and villains at least. And that's just how it goes with movies. We both saw the same movie, but experienced it in wildly different ways, lol. So I really don't fault anyone who likes Love and Thunder or Ragnarok, or that godawful, overhyped No Way Home. I didn't like the movies from my perspective of viewing, but I can respect that others did enjoy the movie from their perspective. That said, regarding perspective, I feel like way too many people today try to review the movie as the watch it instead of just watching it. Love and Thunder wasn't a horrible experience by any means. I don't feel like I wasted my time or money. That's primarily because I just watched it. I didn't bother to critique anything until after the movie was over. I find that it's much easier to enjoy any movie when you go in with no expectations other than, "The trailer looked good enough. I'll check it out." When people go in expecting or not expecting this, that, or the other, then of course they aren't surprised. Of course you're upset that you didn't get what you expected. Just watch the movie and stop trying to guess the next five scenes.

The battle is not one of merely who's stronger. It's at the same time emotionally satisfying while also being unexpected. Giving Thor another mid-life crisis? i mean, yeah it's probably the thing fans don't expect.... but that's because it's stupid, stale and uninteresting. And I want to be surprised if Michael Bay doesn't even know the definition of continuity. At least when it comes to the transformers films you seems to forget all about that. I'm not sure about his other films. But personally even through the bad movies I enjoy those songs cuz they're fun. But I'm not going to defend the fucking riding because it's fun. I'm not going to defend it because it's enjoyable to me. I enjoy it because it's fun to me regardless of this shit writing. Others are not going to like it because of this shit right. Me defending it when the writing is clearly obviously shit would be fucking stupid. And more so just treating it as an attack to my ego. And like you said, just trying to find an excuse to defend your purchase for the film. Which nobody should have to do that. I think the fact that you enjoyed the film is more than enough to defense for your purchase. That's the whole point we purchase media. To enjoy it. So if somebody doesn't like it they may have the legitimate reason to regret that purchase. Others might not. And this is definitely something that happens with all media and not just films. I see this within the gaming industry all the fucking time. People will defend the game like it's the perfect game and as if it's flaws are actually its strengths. I can think of a few games right off the top of my head that were very flawed, and probably could have used the biggest update of their life. A full blown overhaul. And yes I still managed to enjoy them. I think the fact I have any enjoyments of my purchase at all is enough of a reason to say my purchase was worth it. Regardless of others don't like it. Doesn't mean that game doesn't need some work done. But for some reason a lot of people don't want to look at it that way. If somebody else find something you like bad, there's a problem. The number one problem with the volume background is they can’t change it in post production, they have to reshoot everything that doesn’t look good. Green screen they add later so if they want to change it they just go to computer and change it. No reshoots.

If you are a somewhat decent director, you will end up with more great footage than what fits in the runtime, and many scenes that are cut will be great, and you hate that they have to go. The better and greater the story, the more such hard decisions have to made. If you don't have to cut scenes you love, you either are a master at planning things out, or most likely you just failed at directing and the movie could be condensed into an hour or less. It is basically unheard of to keep all scenes you love. It's like saying you could eat everything you loved at an all-you-can-eat-buffet: Chances are that you either have to stop eating at some point even though you would love to continue, or the buffet is shit.

Youre dealing with two arbitrary variables here: necessity and preference neither of which are formulaic. some of the greatest films of all time have disregarded the "necessities" entirely...they are fashioned purely from preference. now, i understand you're speaking generally here...but i'm just trying to remind you, outside massive studio employment, finding an auteur who cuts scenes he loves because "there just isn't enough time to include it" is an extremely rare occurrence

The movie we got, was her, standing over the shattered pieces, the pieces started to shake and levitate, then "cut", or "end scene". Yet there were still images of Jane, during the production of the movie, on wires, as Jane, "floating" (like she did in Dark World, with the Aether), in that Asgardian setting. I want to see THAT scene, drawn out, like it should have been, in the movie. How does ADHD Waititi go from the shards moving under the bowl, to a whole different scene? Most viewers figured it out, but it was still stupid, and, obviously, jarring.

I recently discovered "What We Do In The Shadows" (the film), and I thought it was hilarious. It was quite clearly a parody of vampire movie tropes. Terrific. Unfortunately I'm pretty sure Waititi decided that ALL of his films were going to be parodies after that. As much as I liked "Thor: Ragnarok," it was quite clearly all over the place tonally. Joke after joke after a very dramatic bit. The Warriors Three tossed aside with hardly a blink. Asgard bites the dust and Waititi himself (as Korg) cracks a one-liner, etc. My boys and I MIGHT watch this on Disney +, but we're in no hurry. Only the second Marvel movie we won't have watched in the theaters ("The Eternals" being the first). Can Waititi really ruin Star Wars though? It's been gone for years.

I don't think it's been "gone for years." I've pretty much forced myself to not get excited for anything Star Wars until it proves itself or unless Dave Filoni is the one creatively holding the reins like with Clone Wars, Rebels, Bad Batch, Mandalorian and soon Tales of the Jedi. He's not perfect, but he knows how to tell cool and fun Star Wars stories, and you can tell he actually gives a rip about it. Waititi's episode or two that he did in The Mandalorian were mostly really good, but if this is what we have to expect, I'm probably checking out for this as well. I'm glad it'll probably be it's own self-contained thing with no established characters. That's the best sign that it actually has a chance at not being terrible.

Unfortunately a lot of movies are made this way, but especially with Marvel Studios movies, where tons of lines of dialogue are either pre-written, or ad-libbed spontaneously for every scene, and a lot is left out on the cutting room floor. Even trailers for movies can have some of these lines in them, but the final release of the movie never has them, because they were removed before release. They may or may not appear in deleted or added scenes once the movie is released outside of theatres. (DVD, Blu-Ray, streaming, syndication) This is what the studio wants, in the sense they can have early screenings, get reactions, and then add or remove scenes from what's filmed, and schedule reshoots if needed.

eh. I think Marvel is actually very protective of their IPs. They let Waititi take liberties with Thor, and this last movie was (I think) a bridge too far. But Feige has done a ton of wrangling. even before him, Marvel was pretty famous for it. you can really see this when you compare the MCU stuff to the SW debacle over at Lucasfilm. They have really serious continuity and character continuity issues. They couldn't even put together a "trilogy" of movies designed to go together.

I definitely think this was a not the best marvel movie out there, but I still genuinely think taika waititi is a good director. Sure he has gotten an ego with all of his successes, but his movies have been such a great refresher from all of the bland cookie cutter Hollywood movies we have been getting recently. Yeah it might be better if he takes these risky ideas to his own movies rather than existing franchises, but we would not have gotten a movie like Ragnarok which was pretty damn good imo. If he messes up one movie trying something new I honestly don't mind that much, as long as he learns from it. I feel you were being rather cynical about all of it and only focusing on the bad parts, but hey that's just my opinion and I don't want to really start anything.

2:27 I'm actually going to agree with him, with the stipulation that it needs to come from a place of love for the property and its fans, not malice (and I'm not convinced that Waititi isn't malicious, to say the least). Believe it or not, there was a time when the ever increasingly-popular game Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance was near-universally despised among Metal Gear fans. All they had was trailers, and the trailers showed a hack-and-slash action game instead of a stealth game like they were more used to, and they didn't like it. It wasn't until the game actually came out and they played the damn thing that they finally began to realize just how good it really was. Though I do think timing is critical. When a series is on life support, you need to get back to its roots, not be getting overly ambitious with crazy ideas that don't seem to fit at first glance. And the MCU is absolutely on life support.
