This was a very good video Thooorin. This is actually a topic I've been thinking about lately... What am I really doing? I used to play League like a madman a couple of years backwards and really enjoyed it, watch tv-shows and anime that were really fun to watch and were exciting, but lately for some reason I have not enjoyed doing those things because I have wondered in my head "Why am I doing this?" Like even watching this video before I watched it I had the exact feeling "Should I really watch this? Is this going to be a waste of time?" This is something I really want to get rid of. HOW do I stop this way of thinking that in a way EVERYTHING is a waste of time and therefore I shouldn't do anything because it would just waste my time. Im not enjoying anything because I keep thinking like this and is there any way to get rid of this kind of thinking or to change my mindset that everything would not be waste of my time?

so, every time somebody said to me that gaming is a waste of time they put this whole time wast thing on a completely different level than other hobbies or activities in general that you are doing when you're not at work or at sleep. For example and i actually tried this, if i decide to spend my weekend playing games and having fun, it's considered a waste of time by most people, parents especially, however, if i spend the same amount of time on the weekend reading a book, or chilling in the park or strolling through the woods or whatever the fuck, it's not! and this is what annoys me the most personally, and i bet i'm not the only one, the fact that people tend to "downgrade" gaming to a whole new level of wasting time, basically the worst thing you can do in your freetime apart from drugs and hookers, when in reality, it's the same fucking thing as spending your free time with any other activity that only "produces" fun. It's a ridiculous point of view.

+Verlisify very true, but as a fair valid argument i dont think it really is one because if you dumb almost anything down enough, it sounds uselss. i.e. soccer: all soccers players do is kick a ball back and forth trying to kick it into a net. So yes i agree all we are doing is pressing buttons but all the other aspects such as game sense, reaction time, multitasking makes it seem much more complicated. Just like my previous example soccer, you need to have tremendous endurance, amazing leg strength, awareness of other players. So dumbing it down doesnt really make it a fair argument

there is no such thing as "waste of time" funny how people think time should always be used for a goal... gaming isn't a waste of time. you are experiencing what life has to give, especially what other life has done, and you are experiencing it. no other form of life created that exact copy of it, 100 years from now, they will never experience it. you, uniquely, are experiencing it. there is no such thing as a waste of time, contextually. If you have a perspective, in terms of a goal, then any means of prolongingness is a waste of time. like if you want to become the best chef in the world, then simply talking with your friends is a waste of time. any distraction from your main goal is a waste of time. however, it isn't always the case that productivity equal the negation of waste of time. Is reading a book a waste of time for a chef? is it a waste of time for a racing driver to learn how to cook? is it a waste of time to do anything? every single life on this planet is experiencing something with their life, now criticizing another person's time used is a waste of time, since that does not do anything productive in every single form of thought.

My general opinion is life is about balance. Finding the perfect balance is key. We can't just work or in some cases for young people, study all day. Sometimes we would really explode when we get to the point of extreme stress and when you can't handle too much shit anymore. You'll need a good break and relaxation. It can come from anything. Playing video games or sports, reading books, watching movies or tv shows, watching some sports, listening music or anything that is stress reliving. After you are done,go back to work or studies with a bit of a fresh mind. On the flip side of the coin, don't over spent too much on it. It literally will become a waste of time and something you do as a way of being productive will just become a waste of time. Been there before and not something I look at it with fondness sometimes. That's just my opinion and thoughts. You will have a better opinion than what I have

Pretty on point from Thorin It's in a sense a place between physical sports and watching okay telly: You have a miniscule chance of getting money, fame and a job out of it, and you get entertainment and something to improve at, while learning and improving in some general areas like language, teamwork, concentration, etc (depending on game). Less health benefits than sports and often more time spent than sports, bit like telly, so more harmful to other activities

My understanding of a career is that, as opposed to a job, a career is an occupation that you would still enjoy doing for free. I enjoy learning and teaching music, and I am going to school for music education. I do it for free, but of course it will become a paid career for me. That is just how civilization around art works. If you are not producing material goods then you are wasting time. At least that's what we are taught. educators are paid very poorly where I come from (dead last in the United States), and I'm fine with that. No delusions about that. Good video Thorin. You surprise regularly me with how well versed you are with your wide array of philosophical understanding compared to most interviewers / commentators. This is an area of life I think about a lot.

I can 100% agree to this. I play games every evening when i come home from my job as a goldsmith. My parents think its a waste of time, but it actually helps me get my mind of things and relax, since my job is really stressful in the sense that u have to be at 100% mentally 100% of the time or otherwise u risk destroying value. Then on the other hand some people might say that goldsmith is a waste of time since u dont add any direct value to peoples lifes its more of an art then something productive. But most people that come to us go away happy with an item that reminds them of someone that died recently, something that symblizes a relationship or even just something beautiful on its own.

When you speak of time as the ultimate goal, the supreme currency, it reminded me of that film with Justin Timberlake, called "In Time". I don't know if you've seen it, Thorin, but it is a very similar premise to the idea of time as the most important thing in life. Effectively, in the film, everyone of the citizens has an implant under their skin which has their "time" or bank balance, and it runs out because time is finite, or so the plebs are lead to believe. But the rich, the elite, have unlimited time and are effectively immortal. People by and sell using time as currency, everything, from Mars bar to a house, costs units of time. But another world exists, away from the poor, who are told they only get a set period of time, that is filled with the rich and powerful, people who know the truth...that there is enough time for everyone to live forever, but they can't let the poor know this or the whole system collapses, much like the way money today only has value because the "people" believe it does, or authority only has power because we are programmed to think it does. Anyway, great video and enough you haven't seen the film it's worth a watch.

There is one point that you didn't touch on that I find to be incredibly important if you're going to have this conversation. It's that video games for the most part overtly and sometimes inadvertently feed you a false sense of accomplishment, in turn releasing massive amounts of dopamine in the brain in the same way that smoking a cigarette or gambling would. Who the hell isn't going to enjoy copious amount of happy chemicals surging through your system? The point of video games is not to play them for some kind of fulfillment, but with the borderline criminal way that they draw you in to play them it can be difficult for me to not feel like I'm being swindled even after five minutes of playtime.

Interesting, points. I'd like to talk about this that you say: "Gaming, like any hobby, is a waste of time and not a legitimate career for the sake of a stable source of income" However, there are professions such as being an artist, actor and poet, which are recognized as legitimate jobs but just like gaming, the financial success only applies to a select few, while the vast majority do not have much financial security or a stable income.

So gaming has around the same chances of being a pro basketball player or some traditional sport. So some people may think that normal sports are a waste too because of how much time you put in. Although you would get fairly healthy physically. To many people these "wastes of time" are fun. So I think people who like it play on. If you think that gaming is stupid then what about television or even KZbin are wastes of time because they are entertaining and the amount to some extent people watch and/or try to make it in this field as a job are over 99 percent are going to fail at making it a carrer. Now debate below what your opinions are. 😊 As you can see I make no clear points to or for either sides of the argument I am just sharing observations.

Amazong video. I think something to add would be the subjectivity factor. Some people run a higher risk of getting addicted to video games since they are just wired differently and maby very competitive which can end up beeing a pitfall while others have more self regulation in that regard are can manage to only play 2-3 times a week for a limited amount of time. Subjective perception and ones intrinsic wireing (deep psychological triggers etc.) do play a major role I believe.

There IS infact productivity beyond what they themselves generate: If you play games and had a session of laughs, enjoyment, challenge, etc, that can give you more room in your life to do productive things BECAUSE you also had your quality leisure time. If i wouldn't do things for fun, would i be looking forward to being productive all the time? Hell no. You need a balance between the two.

That reminds me of a quote.. 'Turn what you love into your job and you will never have to work again' I think it's very true. But awesome, nice coworkers are enough as well :) at least for now... yeah... I somehow missed the point. But I agree, it's completely fine to waste your time, if you end up having a good time and don't abandon everything else. There is no other meaning in life than that. At least thats what I think.

I honestly love the approach thorin shows in most if not all his videos. To me its an injection of reality that I need.

As i always say : "Everything is a matter of point of view" People saying that something is a waste of time or criticizing your hobbies, have perspective problems (blocked in a certain mindset) or they try to devalue your life to make theirs meaningful.

Thooorin is the realist. Those who agree with him including myself will give up on gaming and realize that they are never going to go pro. The dreamers that refuse to believe him will go pro. (unless they dont and they become a hobo)

I fully realize that It's a waste of time and that i will never become a pro. I do not play games to become a pro or earn money, I do it because i enjoy it. Gaming is my hobby and what I enjoy doing, therefore time well spent from my viewpoint. One might say that I should rather play baseball or soccer instead, but what would I get out of it? In the end: Nothing, which is less than I would get from playing games.

As Thorin gives us a basic economics lesson. Specialization and division of labor is important. Even Thorin is an entertainer at the end of the day, so this is almost a validation of his own career.

If you enjoy something, why is it a waste of time? Simply put enjoy your gaming but use it as a hobby to be happy. Work normally and then game alongside it when you have time. I don't play to go pro, I play because it cheers me up and winds me down, It's a form of enjoyment alongside my job.

Thorin, would you consider making a video on who is Cogu? Granted he doesn't play cs anymore, (at least, i haven't seen much from him) but its nearly impossible to talk about the pro scene and NOT mention cogu as one of the best to ever play.

I'll just say that if gaming is a waste of time, then so is: -listening to music -watching TV -playing sports -playing card games -playing chess -watching a show -swimming -martial arts -going to the cinema Point is, we are allowed free time and hobbies even if we aren't being productive.

Counting gaming as entertainment and comparing it to art, once could argue that Gaming is quite popular amoung kids, teenagers up to young adults and even parents themselves. Maybe it is just a freaking good type of entertainment. Look at people like R.A. Salvatore a successful writer who to this day is involved in video games to "virtualize" the stories and books he created. Video games are a medium, just like theatre, books, music and so on.

"Every hobby is a waste of time. You gain nothing from it but enjoyment." Not entirely true. From many hobbies you gain friends and new acquaintances. From gaming, you don't. Well, you make friends on the internet but that's it. The hobby I've invested a big part of my youth in is music and it has got me so many friends. So yes, you gain more from other hobbies than from gaming.

+BottomFragger What is saying that you won't meet these friends at a LAN party or something form of gathering? What if you form a team and then get to go to a tournament together? Other than that, a friend on the internet is still a friend.

Many people speak English thanks to the video games. The time I wasted playing video games was good enough to speak English better than I would at school

Well then again, the only thing you gain from friends is enjoyment, someone being there for you. Everyone needs friends, just like everyone needs a hobby. Friends are essentially a hobby though.

Thoorin a great analist and a smart polemist, the job as a waste of life can be argued, in a metaphoric and real way, and its an important fact to reflex about it, but talking about videogames it concearn with the notion of objective we want to achieve; entertaining? Skill development? Ludic experience? Study videogames history? Analizing it as a form of artistic expression?

I think it strongly depends on what kind of games you play and how you play them. Gaming can give you a lot more than a normal hobby but it can also take a lot more away than other hobbies.

My friend (who is 45) spent 20 years trying to become a pro bass player (he loves hard rock and metal), he failed and is now going to college. If he passes every year, he'll be a teacher at the age of 49. If youre thinking that not making money is a waste of time, then everything is a waste of time. Reading the harry potter books, playing casual chess, playing casual guitar, going out with your friends to drink, sleeping etc. Basically having fun is a waste of time in that sense. If you value fun over money, then any of the examples above would be time well spent. My 45 year old friend was silly, he shouldnt have prioritized his music career over school or work, and neither should you. Its fine that you have a competitive instinct and want to be the best, but very few will make it, and its better to be safe than sorry.
