All I know is this. During the first year of the pandemic in 2020, "The Office" was the most watched show on streaming every week of the year except for a single week. The week it WASN'T the top show of the year was the episode of "The Mandalorian" which had the return of Luke Skywalker. When the market TRULY spoke, Lucasfilm ignored it. That's all you need to know about the current state of Disney Star Wars.

What Disney has is a budgeting problem. They are spending way too much on projects without properly estimating their specific audience appeal. Not every project will interest every fan. When output was very low, fans were excited for whatever they could get but Disney has flooded the market with sub-standard and niche fare for a few years now and it's finally taking its toll. They sacrificed the franchise's appeal to boost its streaming service and ended up hurting both.

It's not budgeting; it's DEI policies. Exactly how much money should Disney have budgeted to fund a series created and overseen by an angry lesbian railing against the patriarchy who believes she should rewrite canon to make the Jedis not so good and the Sith not so bad in order to insure angry young lesbians and angry young minorities "see themselves" in the franchise?

I'd rather see the OG Thrawn trilogy as a legends animated series, re-doing the sequel trilogy doesn't work with the age of the OT cast and the people who have passed away. Casting a voice for an animated series is a lot more acceptable to people than re-casting an actor for live-action (see Solo).

@@johnbox271yes but not from star wars or Disney plus really. The five films Disney made failed to recoup the cost of buying star wars. Willow was a money pit flop. Indiana Jones 5 was a flop. Disney plus only became profitable this year so in reality it's still yet to make back all the money lost. Marvel has been bringing in the money with the occasional animated film here and there doing well. The parks do well (if you exclude the massive failure that was the star wars hotel). That's pretty much it. Yes they're making money still but from star wars specifically? Not really. Merchandise is the only thing bringing in any money but that's been declining for a while. Realistically given the expenditure of the franchise it's likely to be barley making any profit if at all.

Another important distinction is that Agatha All Along - like She Hulk; Ms. Marvel; and Echo - only exists because of DEI policies. As such, that's 40 million dollars wasted no matter how much the numbers increased week by week. (If viewership was actually impressive they'd already be committed to making a second season.) Hey Thor. Just for comparison. There are additional factors to consider. This new adaptation of Percy Jackson was promoted as being more faithful to the source material. The original creator was involved. Fans were willing to give it a chance. In the meantime current Star Wars is promoted as a vehicle for a specific sociopolitical viewpoint, here source material doesn’t even matter. Fans are not willing to give it a chance. I’ve said it before and will say it again. Disney made a bet on Star Wars they thought fans would return just because it was Star Wars and that they could focus on targeting a different group with the content and this proven to be false. Problem is they can’t acknowledge defeat and pivot. Star Wars needs to be shelved for at least half a decade in order to start healing the franchise

Yeah, that's almost everyone i know. My sisters, my mom, my dad, my friends, some of us were the most hardcore star wars fans. My family were hard enough that they may not have loved the prequels, but no one hated them, they enjoyed them. They didn't hurt their interest. But no one I knew seems to still love star wars as it istoday. Most gave up on Disney entirely. Most say 'star wars is dead' or 'I'll remember my fond memories' or just don't care about the new at all and just watch their old copies or play old videogames. But this wouldn't be the worst if 30 somethings to 70 somethings all were disenchanted. I know plenty of people between ages like 16-and up. None of them like star wars. They aren't interested in teh resistance. When Adults hated phantom menace, we loved battle droids and podracers. When they thought attack of the clones was boring, we at least loved the cool battles and weird aliens. Now, kids kinda like kylo? I mean, he's kinda cool. But the few kids I see who like star wars seem to mostly like it kinda passively as a thing. the 20-somethings who loved clone wars just don't seem interested in the new star wars at all and the older generation are all bitter. Whether its the mass exodus of women after the EU death via NJO, or the adults who hated the prequels, or those who had hope for a 'new era' of star wars taht is nw completely gone.

I would *love* to watch that and think it'd contain so much lore people would enjoy, that it could comprise its own video, perhaps long enough for the main channel. As always, *thanks for your work!* I remember being fascinated and intrigued while listening to Canderous Ordo tell his war stories and describe Mandalorian culture in _KotOR 1,_ thinking it'd be awesome to watch Mandalorians on Basilisks swoop down and scream through the clouds upon some doomed city. There are two things I can think of to save Star Wars, neither is guaranteed, and they're both kind of wild swings. One is to go into dormancy for a minimum of three years, and then release something that is crafted with _incredible_ care- something that isn't a prestige project for some of-the-moment director's hubris or an issue that alienates a third or more of the viewership, but something that really taps into that childlike wonder and the sense of "what if I could be a Jedi". The other is to throw the thing wide open to other studios and production companies with only a modicum of control to prevent things from going so left field they can never be re-united, possibly with some kind of profit-splitting "front your own money" agreement.

Kathleen's track record at Lucasfilm is almost inarguably the worst creative leadership tenure in human history. No one has done such a poor job for such a long time. If you dig into the numbers, Lucasfilm is now substantially unprofitable by hundreds of millions of dollars and Disney has somehow lost money on its $4-5 billion dollar investment into Lucasfilm. The expenses on these movies and shows are enormous, and the returns have been steadily dwindling. Things won't get better until she is shown the door and the entire leadership team at Lucasfilm is overhauled. The sequels, The Acolyte, and most of the other material produced so far needs to be retconned (perhaps exempting Andor, Rogue One, and Skeleton Crew, which don't really affect the broader storyline). Not holding my breath. Sadly, Star Wars is dead.

I haven't watched any of these shows, but I do think it is worth pointing out that the numbers for "Skeleton Crew" are for a single month (initial release Dec 2nd), while the numbers for "The Acolyte" are for seven months. Seven months, and the later episodes collecting few views than the initial episodes. I see that and think those are much worse results than "Skeleton Crew". Another question that I don't know: How much did each series cost to create? How much *per minute* for the episdoes of "The Acolyte" released over seven months vs the cost for the episodes of "Skeleton Crew" released in December?

@matthewsands3591
@matthewsands3591 6 күн бұрын
@bluemountain4181 i don't mean everyone contributing to one continuity, they don't all have to contribute to the same continuity. You can have Disney's Canon or the Filoni verse, but we could also have creators dedicated to the legends continuity just making content that fits with that. There'd be different creators creating different continuity and hopefully one will be a coherent and internally consistent one. Especially as there's a demand for that. Without IP laws preventing other people who maybe more committed to a coherent continuity than Disney or Filoni from making Star Wars material, the possibility of good consistent Star Wars is revived.

Hey Thor, one thing that I miss about Star Wars that seems to have disappeared in the Disney era is a lack of unifying and enduring morals or principals. It seems a bit odd for a "family' oriented company like Disney to completely abandoned this unique and, I feel cherished, aspect of Star Wars in favor of identity or gender politics. But I feel one does not necessarily substitute the other and I wanted to know your thoughts. Also, is there a particular aspect of Star Wars spirituality that connected with you personally or had a meaningful impact in your life? For me it is "you must train yourself to let go of everything you fear to lose."

You bring up the point that we shouldn't compare Acolyte to other shows on different streaming services like Netflix because they have bigger subscriber counts. I disagree. The reason Netflix has a bigger sub count than D+ is because they offer better and more diverse content. D+'s shows on average are awful and no one watches them, therefore their subscriber count is abysmal. This is a direct correlation, not something happening in a vacuum. Therefore we SHOULD compare shows on D+ to anything else on any other service.

While Star Wars is a huge franchise, I would hazard a guess that the majority of the fans are "casual," so it's a bit of a misnomer to expect huge viewership simply because they slapped the Star Wars name on it. I know many Star Wars fans that have only watched the movies, once, in the theater, and they have no desire to participate in anything but the mainline films. I also think the low viewership is, in large part, due to "franchise fatigue." You mentioned Marvel, but all recent Marvel properties have also seen the same sharp decline in viewership that Star Wars is experiencing. Now, can we argue that most of the recent Marvel and Star Wars titles have been critically panned? Sure. But I personally don't think "bad shows" are solely responsible for killing these franchises. I think Star Wars is suffering from *over saturation.* Every year, there's a new Star Wars show, and these shows have to compete with the plethora of other sci-fi and fantasy shows on other streaming services. User commentary is critical for getting new shows out of the sea of competition and in front of its audience, and so shows have to either be God-tier good or extremely bad. Most of the people I know heard The Acolyte was the worst Star Wars show ever and watched a few episodes out of morbid curiosity. But viewership is viewership, and studios don't care as long as they get their money, and it's way easier to make an extremely bad show than a good one.

If they actually think they have a winner on their hands, Disney might want to seriously consider a licensing deal with Netflix for their next Star Wars show. They wouldn't even need to give up on Disney Plus because the people who subscribe so that their kids can watch the animated Disney films over and over again aren't going anywhere. The Disney Channel succeeded on cable for a very long time while catering entirely to a younger audience, so there's no reason they couldn't take the same approach with streaming.

The Acolyte had no staying power and after the initial push couldn't gain viewers or repeat watched. I'd say Skeleton Crew shows there is still life and people ready to watch if Disney can just do the right thing.
