In my opinion, the most disrespectful thing done was reducing the role of the Skywalker/Solo family and then killing off that bloodline. So many disrespectful things to the original trilogy that is difficult to choose: Making Rey an almighty, alwise entity, making by comparisson all her predecessors just inoperative clowns. Resurrecting The emperor, rendering Vader's sacrifice just without any meaning, but saving Luke that at the end will end up being a hermit that don't care about anyone. Making Luke a grumpy hopeless old man that don't care about anything nor anyone. Making Han a grumpy hopeless old man, and destroying all the evolution he had as a character in the OT from a rascal that don't care about anyone but himself to a selfless hero. Making Leia Mary Poppins in space. I think Adam Driver is a good actor, but not in a million years something with that face can be the son of Leia and Han. Making Boba Fett, one of the tactically smartest guy in the galaxy, a dumb old man that takes orders from whoever and that don't have a single good idea in his entire show, all the decent ideas come from the people around him. They basically gave what was his personalitty to Fennec Shand. Making Obi Wan a dumb coward in his own show. Making Chewy someone that is there only for decoration. Killing Admiral Ackbar in the less memorable way, and trying to give a random pink haired no one care woman, an heroic death. Weaponizing hyperdrive, making all previous tactics against the Death Star, just dumb. Now it seems like just anyone can control the Force simply by training, like they did in that terrible show that I had high expetations and as usual was just terrible, called Ahsoka. Probably one of the worst things you can do to the lore cause so many things just don't make sense anymore. Although I liked most of the show, (season 3 was pathetic), in the Mandalorian, the way they made fun of troopers' ineffectiveness, like defeating a trooper is something anyone with a broom can do, bothered me. It's okay for the main characters to have plot armor, but when every single secondary character can defeat them easily, it creates the sense that the Empire is not a threat at all, hense there's no epicness in doing so. And so many more ... that again .. difficult to choose.

When they put together TFA, they were seemingly hellbent on trying to replicate what worked in 1977, catch Thunder a second time if you will: Repeating the tried and tested "Empire vs. Rebellion"-Formula from ANH. Unfortunately, such a premise doesn't work if the preceding movie ended with the previous Rebellion winning against the previous Empire, for all intents and purposes leaving the Heroes' side in charge. For a new Empire to rise and a new Rebellion to get formed in response, the Gouvernment that was created in the wake of the good Guys' victory decades earlier had to be made incompetent and useless, an utter nonentity. To say that its a disappointment that *this* is the thing so many Rebels have fought and died for would be an understatement. This, Luke's new Jedi Order getting destroyed before it could really go anywhere and the Han/Leia-relationship falling apart (resetting their character arcs and putting them in similar but worse places than they were at the start of ANH) contitute the main reason why I don't consider the Sequels canon and will ignore everything that attempts to follow in their aimless footsteps.

One of the things that you really appreciate about the 6 original Star Wars films, as that each one was very different from the other and in the scheme of things they all made sense. The sequels however, were not only a re-tread of what had gone before, but the writers sought to outdo the scale and technology of the originals, without having the maturity to understand why there needed to be limits.

Imagine if; instead of the plot we got in Ahsoka this happens: Balyon, Shin, Morgan and Sabine get to the distant Galaxy and find... Ezra and Thrawn are working together. Why didn't Thrawn kill Ezra? He was useful until help arrived There is something terrifying at work here, something so scary that Thrawn's SSD, his Stormtroopers, the Nightsisters and Ezra together are just barely holding on, they are in fact more or less in hiding and hoping for rescue. When our main cast arrives and try to find Thrawn/Ezra they draw it's attention and now Ahsoka, Sabine and Ezra are having to fight for their lives, alongside Thrawn. Then Thrawn, being the maniuplator he is, see's his opportunity and uses Morgans hyper ring to escape, leaving Shin, Sabine, Ezra, Ahsoka and Morgan on the ground. We now have the same outcome: Morgan can die trying to give Thrawn time to escape, Baylon still is looking for the power source and Shin is abandoned as "unecessary" by Thrawn, we can still have a "OMG get on board the SSD before Thrawn escapes, with Ezra just making it. Ahsoka and Sabine are still stuck while Thrawn comes back. The only difference is now being stuck on this alien world is *scary* because there's something out there that's gaze we don't want to draw, and now, we no longer have a Star Destroyer on our side. But more importantly, we get to see Thrawn actually be a scary competent commander. Because he's temporarily "on the good guys side" he can have all the devious battle plans, he can come away with a huge win. And if someone is like "Why didn't you kill the three Jedi" he then can turn around and be like "Do you know how much we'd loose trying to take down three Jedi? No, far better to leave them stranded here when we'll need every Stormtrooper to take on the Republic." and it'll actually make sense.

I think part of why current Lucasfilm has minimized focus on the New Republic is that they don’t want to admit the things that make it weak, because it goes against their worldview. Consider this. The Rebel Alliance was a loose collection of groups with a generic shared goal - the end of the Empire. However, those groups often had differing (if not outright conflicting) thoughts on how to defeat the Empire and what to do after. The New Republic is now those same groups setting aside the relatively easier task of fighting the government and taking up the much more difficult task of creating a new one. Factional differences now become the fights of the day. Cultural differences and outlooks on the Empire (and the Rebellion) guide where those political battles occur. The widely varying Diversity of the galaxy is the first hurdle and handicap in the nascent new government. Zahn portrayed this perfectly in the original Thrawn trilogy through Bothan Senator Borsk Fey’lya. Zahn built that Bothan society was built around obtaining power and prestige by any means necessary; merit was not a consideration. This lead Fey’lya to take advantage of the situation to attack and then replace Admiral Ackbar as the commander of the NR military. Not because Fey’lya thought he was a better commander (he had no actual military command experience), but because he saw it as the best next step towards eventually taking the chancellorship. Fey’lya saw it as just business, with nothing actually personal about it. And it was that kind of cultural maneuvering that undermined the NR and nearly caused it to lose to Thrawn, if not for the renegade actions of the Skywalkers and their friends. That is what Lucasfilm doesn’t want to address. They just want to shortcut around it, to avoid those discussions and the hard truths contained within.

Yeah, no. They chickened from the natural continuation of OT the same reason Legends did: They wanted the familiar imagery, which can't happen if the good guys actually win and resolve the central conflict, and so in both versions the Empire got it's shit back together and the good guys undermined their own victory. In Legends so badly the Empire eventually just won. Oh and some extragalactic invaders in the meantime, that was new at least Lucas' allegends plans for the sequels retcon everything Jedi Academy onwards and focus on the postbellum chaos that results when the Evil Empire is no more. The main antagonist faction was going to be the underworld that emerged from the chaos.
@JoRoq1
@JoRoq1 11 ай бұрын
@@mpnuorva If you want to talk about the “natural continuation”, you have to start with the fact that the Empire was still in control in the aftermath of Endor. Palpatine and Vader were dead, and a large portion of the Imperial fleet destroyed, but the Imperial government and military was still in control (just with disputes over who was next to be in charge). The Rebellion still had to fight against that, and then lay the foundations for establishing a new government to replace it. Competing factions within the Empire (later the Imperial Remnant) and within the Rebellion (later the New Republic) would make that transitional period messy, allowing dominance to ebb and flow until attrition and disfunction finally crippled one side or the other. And in both versions, it wasn’t just that the Empire “got its shit back together.” The New Republic got caught up in its own internal problems, with the various members generally either ignoring or dismissing the possibility of a threat from the loyalist Imperial Remnant.

They briefly touch on The New Republic in the Disney canon novel BLOODLINES, where the New Republic is basically composed of one group that wants to keep things as hands-off as possible, and another group that wants to redo what the Empire did but make it not evil. The events depicted are called lore, and the sequence of those lores is a continuity. Canon and lore are no synonyms, so please, stop spreading this idiotic misuse. Even if Disney misuses it to refer to their continuity, that's no excuse for us to be misusing the term as well. 2: No. "Everyone can be a Jedi" has literally always been the status quo in the lore. There's such an array of TTRPG's out there. If you're looking for a new one it would depend a bit on what you're looking for. I know Savage Worlds is one of my go to systems. It's very easy to run. It's very good for pulp/horror adventures and when there is combat it tends to be much quicker. It is a universal system so it comes with all of the pros and cons of that but I have had fun running super heroes of many flavors, multiple star wars type campaigns, Scooby Doo, various modern horror halloween one shots, and regular fantasy. If you want modern horror with a stronger sense of narrative, I highly recommend Chronicles of Darkness. I personally have a lot of fun with Legend of the Five Rings 3e or 4e though it is more specialized to playing fantasy samurai and the mechanics behind the game are very tied to the lore.

Their Year Zero engine is quite good, less crunch but robust enough to tackle a variety of genres. Forbidden Lands is excellent, if hex crawling is your thing, as is Mutant Year Zero. Coriolis is a fun space opera with a Middle Eastern vibe. Dragonbane, is a close cousin to D&D, and if you are looking for a modern apocalyptic vibe, their remake of Twilight 2000 is spot on. Obviously, there are a host of games out there for all kinds of play styles. I think you could do worse than Free League. Thanks again for the videos.

Isn't the brilliance of Thrawn that he studies his opponent? This is really something that you could say in big part took place in the series. Thrawn was testing his opponents against his forces, and his undead forces later, and testing their ability to stop him up until they almost succeeded. Now Thrawn knows first hand what doesn't work (and possibly what might actually work against Ahsoka and the gang). In the series Thrawn wasn't really threatened, and I'm sure he knew that. So of course he would use the opportunity to test his enemies. It makes sense to test the nightsister's undead forces as much as anything else that Thrawn did in the series. This makes him even more cynical and a frightening foe.

Thrawn wasn't cynical. He commanded with respect and commitment to people serving under him. He inspired instead of creating fear or fanaticism like Tarkin or Vader. Sending troops for slaughter isn't his M.O. He studied cultures and art and could predict their thinking based on this. Thrawn would know what Ahsoka would do because he knew her master. He knew Sabine and Ezra from many confrontations. There was no need for further study. Thrawn from Ahsoka is different person than that from Rebels or books. Filoni characterized him badly in Ahsoka. So how should I look at this character? Because as continuation he is just poorly written mess and I criticize him from this angle.

Where in D&D you are built up in a fun way over the course of the game, Call of Cthulhu tears you down but in a fun way. Call tends to be one shot adventures because of this aspect. The greatest praise I can give it is this: I've only played one game of it, but I actually still remember it. And considering that I've been playing D&D for 48 years now, that's saying something.

I never cared too much for Cassian in Rogue One, seemed like a discount Han Solo to me in many ways. Also, I think the fact that I have now been burned too many times by going into new content interested (sequels, mando s3, kenobi and ahsoka). The most excited I have been for Star Wars since a long time was when I got a SW encyclopedia as a gift (one made before Disney purchase so it has a LOT of EU stuff in it).

I had virtually no interest in the series or the character but decided to watch anyway. I'll say this upfront: it's not for everyone. It's a "slow burn." If you prefer a plot that moves along quickly with lots of action (there's nothing wrong with that preference) you'll probably be bored. But if you like detailed character-building and nuanced stories with occasional high-octane episodes as a reward for all of that buildup, it's one of the best things to ever come from the Star Wars universe. I'm in the 2nd camp so I loved it and the buildup made the action scenes so much more enjoyable to me. YMMV. I can totally understand why some people disliked it, but I loved it.

To me it’s so obvious why Andor wasn’t a bigger hit. I think the problem is characterized PERFECTLY with Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. Both those shows also handled more mature themes and intricate characters and storylines. Where they differ from Andor, though, is they never forgot the importance of those dang dragons. And that cathartic action that those dragons brought to the show elevated it from an 8 to an 11. Even Tony Gilroy understood this when he added that delicious seasoning of Vader at the end of Rogue One. Vader was the dragon. Andor had no dragons. All the ingredients were there and the food was good, but Andor forgot to add that last crucial detail of putting a cherry on top. I’m not saying the show needed empty fan service but it needed one or two “Vader” moments to bring it to that next level. As is…it kind of just completely went along. I’m hoping for bigger moments in season two that compliment the good writing and characters. Andor shouldn’t forgot that it is in the Star Wars universe and bring a little more excitement and wonder in future, climactic moments.
@JoRoq1
@JoRoq1 11 ай бұрын
What would you consider a good “Vader” moment would be? What or who would be the dragon that the audience would find believable? “Andor” is a side-story to the main Skywalker saga, while GOT and HOD are that franchise’s main saga. It is not a completely fair comparison. Nothing in “Andor” is critical to watching the main movies. Instead, “Andor” is the opportunity to explore what was happening elsewhere, what lead up to events of the main saga. There are no epic grand moments, because the meta-story is not there yet. (Epic character moments, yes, but no single galaxy-shaking events.) Vader worked well in Rogue One because it was the time in the story for an epic event, the formal launch of open warfare and setting the stage for the main saga. “Andor” is not taking place at that same level; it is filling in the foundations for those big moments yet to come in the timeline.
@-AtomsPhere-
@-AtomsPhere- 11 ай бұрын
@@JoRoq1 I see what you’re saying, and I think the burden is on the writers to come up with moments once in a while that remind the audience this grounded story is taking place in a fantastical/mystical galaxy. Just because Andor’s story is taking place on a mostly human level, doesn’t mean it isn’t still a part of the main Star Wars galaxy. I think a minor issue with the show was not having hardly ANY aliens. Where were they?! I say still write a great, grounded plot driven character story, but EMBRACE the Star Wars universe while you’re doing it. I think having K2-SO in season 2 will help with that. I’m not saying make monsters, aliens or force users a focus of the story, I’m just saying don’t forget about them because they ARE a part of the universe and why someone would watch the show. I just really want Andor to succeed, and by stripping the show of the things that make Star Wars unique, they’re severely limiting its appeal (as made obvious by season 1’s very low viewership). So I hope the show finds the balance in season 2 by telling a mature story, but being exciting enough that viewers will think they HAVE to watch the next episode. They need to end each episode with a BANG! I hope they can do it.

@@JoRoq1 Did'nt see it myself but I've absorbed alot of it through dicourse and in-depth reviews. It seems Andor made a point of showing the banality of the Empire. You have generals and supervisors slacking off, ignoring their duties, and one major Empire character eating dinner with his mom, stuff like that. That's not epic, its like anti-epic. And I think that was the point they wanted to make for some reason? What I needed to hear about was some serious heroics on display. Like imagine if that boring Syril guy does some investigating, and happens upon some random Jedi in hiding, who then just proceeds to go complete ham! Hes cutting down scores of troopers, reflecting shots, jumping around, hes just unstoppable, and hes chasing down our anti-hero. @@lennyztrobos8678 That banality is the point. What happens to the “little people”. What drives a man to betray his own morals and convictions to organize terroristic activities and intentionally let allies be killed? What drives a Senator to betray her own family in order to undermine the very government she is part of? It’s not always massive dramatic events, but a series of small things slowly growing larger - the snowball rolling down the snow-covered mountain until it is finally the size of a boulder. If you can get hold of it, the best pen and paper RPG of all time (next to DnD, because the influence of DnD is unmatched) is the late 90s original release of Deadlands (Pinnacle Games). If you're not familiar, it's an alternate timeline frontier game that takes place in 1876, with the year 1863 being the divergence point of our timeline with that of the setting. The game has elements of steampunk, otherworldly horror, apocalyptic doom, arcane science and mysticism, and above all, heroism. The part I like best about the system is the incorporation of a standard 54 card Hoyle deck (i.e. inclusion of Jokers) and poker chips along with the dice. If you're familiar with the show, it might remind you of the Adventures of Brisco County Jr, and one of the early play testers was Bruce Campbell himself. There have been other iterations, but for my money the original is an 'accept no substitutes' kind of product. It is the one with the orange and yellow cover with an image of a manitou (demon) possessed undead gunslinger named Stone on the cover. It's a nice divergence from the fantasy genre if one is looking for something different.

When I think of the New Republic, I think of the parallels to the French Revolution which resulted in a new government every 3 -4 years before Napoleon brought things full circle. In Andor, there's that scene where Saw Geurero (sp?) talks about the different factions and how he doesn't like or respect any of them. Establishing the New Republic was always going to be difficult. I don't believe that reflects badly on the legacy characters.

I think the biggest problem with anything post-Return is that George just let too much time pass before returning to make a new series. Yeah I understand he didn't want to go back just yet and was waiting for the technology to improve and also because he wanted to do the prequels. That time obviously was the best time to do sequels as the cast still weren't too old yet but what about the prequels? Well, as I've pitched before you could have told a story set simultaneously in the past and the present a la The Godfather Part II. Anakin's story and Luke's story reflect each other but in different ways. Something from Anakin's past is needed to help Luke fight the current threat. Maybe Luke discovers that R2 was there the whole time and he accesses R2's memories to find out what he needs to know.

I think a clever development would have been the reconciling of the use of former imperial personnel in the new republic military - from industrialists to officers etc- which would have been essential in rebuilding the republic. That would have led to uncomfortable pardons and compromise. I imagine it would have been akin to the rebuilding of the west German army during the cold war. Obviously the war criminals were excluded, but ex Wehrmacht and industrialists who were experienced were required to form the core of the new bundeswehr. It was a necessary compromise in the face of the Soviets. Lots of possibilities for clever stories in such a scenario, especially instead of just recycling the empire as the first order- who are just stormtroopers designed by Apple.

Hey Thor, I’m not sure how familiar you are with the Arkham games but with the new suicide squad game coming out it got me thinking about your thoughts on head canon. Personally I can’t see the Batman from the Arkham games reduced to being irredeemably evil and eventually lectured by Harley Quinn of all people before he’s killed unceremoniously. I am basically convincing myself the events of the game took place in a separate universe from Arkham despite the storytellers who had nothing to do with the Arkham games tell us otherwise. This game was made with different leadership and storytellers and it certainly felt that way much like with the sequel trilogy. This brings me to my main issue with Star Wars at the moment where there are many things I can’t agree with and wish things had happened another way. So much has been made that hardly acknowledges previous work and without much care for the property. I am now of the mind that my 7 year old brain dreaming about what happened after return of the Jedi has now surpassed the sequels as canon.

Best solution for what the OT characters are doing in the coming conflict with Thrawn. Ezra and Luke become a buddy cop duo against Thrawn / the imperial remnants, at least until Ahsoka and Sabine return (however they do that). You can have Han and Leia be involved in getting the good parts of the NR to come good and help out (whilst the majority of the NR sucks ass). The specifics obviously depend on what the actual plot turns out to be ... but I figure this allows Luke to have some jedi adventures with Ezra - and for Han and Leia to show their quality ... before the ST arcs do what they do(!).

The prequal trilogy showing us just how terrible the Republic that supposedly the Rebel Alliance was fighting to restore. It made all of those in the original three movies look like fools and idiots for wanting to restore a government that willing with thunderous applause rebranded it's self to the very government they were now fighting.

Pathfinder 2Edition is the best RPG that I've ever played. I would highly suggest checking it out. It has a smooth system that is number crunchy for the DM, but for the players it's simple enough. Also, PF2E makes high level play actually viable. 5e in all the groups I've been in never got above 12th level without it feeling really broken and unbalanced.

For me, the Remastered is my favorite of the RotJ ending. Not just seeing the galaxy celebrating telling us that there is hope for the future, but for the music. It's so perfect for a finale and I just love listening to it.

I had the original VHS release without the remastered nonsene and Han shooting first. The beginning of the tapes had the Lucas interview where he promised a prequel trilogy and implied ep 7-9 would also come. I watched it so many times that the tapes would only play with a ton of static. The only good thing they did when remastering original trilogy was the awful Ewok song at the end.

The original Thrawn Trilogy was such a good story. It had the political intrigue of a spy novel, war story, and a Game of Thrones (without being as bogged down as Martin's bloated storytelling), whilst also having plenty of action and adventure. Thor makes a great point in that, what guarantee do we have that Po and Rey can succeed where Luke and Leia failed weirdly reminds me of how I felt after watching Crazy Rich Asians. At the end, they're dancing and celebrating, especially the main female lead's new engagement, yet every marriage in that rich family turns out bad, so what hope is there for the female lead?

The sequels only work if you retcon the ot. Basicly in rotj the good guys had to lose. Luke gives in to the dark side and disconnects from the force and so on. I don't think thst there is a greater disrespect than to retcon the ending of ep 6.

Try "RIFTS". Its a series out of the Palladium gaming system (Robotech is their other prominent title). Its a batshit crazy gaming gumbo of robots, power armors, magic, psionics, mercenaries, knights, demons, gods, aliens, supernatural intelligences, vampires, monsters, and a nazilike techno empire that has risen out of the ashes of North America. It was just too off the wall for me to accept when I was gaming from Robotech, but after one game, I was hooked and soon after was doomed to become the go to gamemaster.

I could see Thrawn providing TFA with a loophole of sorts on its writing. Maybe the New Republic is just barely hanging onto its existence after the war with Thrawn and that's why they're so easy to wipe out in TFA? That's just my two cents at the moment though lol. Thank you for another video! I'm still hopeful Star Wars can be good again. God be with you out there everybody. ✝️ :)

Hey Thor, one thing I’ve noticed about modern ‘Star Wars’ is that something upcoming or already available to us - whether it’s a show or a character - has been considered seemingly so promising by a number of fans that it will ‘save Star Wars’, only for those same fans to be disappointed for reasons I’m sure one can guess, whether or not you’re a Star Wars fan. It’s a misconception that Star Wars is about good vs evil. It seems the current people behind Star Wars believe the same thing, yet struggle to write evil characters who aren’t sympathetic or good characters incapable of making foolish or undermining choices. I do believe many fans are understandably desperate for good or true Star Wars again, one possible reason (among any of many others of course) why said fans will support subpar Star Wars shows when they’re not believing someone or something will save Star Wars. The truth is, Star Wars has always been about ‘family’ and ‘choice’. Luke saving his father from grip of the Dark Side centered around his own despair and self-loathing by calling out to the good in Anakin and risking his life so Anakin can break his chains to free himself from the shadow of Darth Vader and the Emperor is a prime example of both. For the theme of ‘choice’, it tells us that it’s never too late. It’s never too late for Star Wars, either, that is something my soul cannot deny, having grown up loving Star Wars for my whole life and acknowledging its massive impact on people and cultures. So I wish to know your thoughts on this, Thor; especially with a Rey movie apparently still somewhere on the horizon, do you believe focusing on ‘choice’ and ‘family’ again could or is the key to saving Star Wars, or at least the first step towards saving it?

Luke in TLJ is the worst overall, but it started right out of the gate - in our timeline, with Force Awakens wiping out ROTJ, and in-universe timeline, with the “Mandoverse” clearly showing the victory at the end of ROTJ was over about five minutes after the Ewoks all went to bed. Great Value Thrawn adds insult to injury.

I had never seen OG SW or the prequels but still knew the fundamentals of the story. I had no previous love of the characters to defend so purely from a storytelling pov I had no interest in the sequels. It didn't make sense to me that the empire was back...except it's not the empire, it's this other thing. It wasn't until Mando that I found something I could enjoy and only with Andor did I finally understand why SW meant so much to people. Andor is what finally got me invested enough to go back to the originals. I completely agree that the sequels, which I still refuse to watch, are disrespectful of the rich lore. In my opinion it's just as bad as the end of Game of Thrones, where it turned out basically nothing from those first few seasons mattered. So, too, with the sequels: Vader's sacrifice and the meaning behind the rebels' victory was all carelessly discarded just to get an empty board. There was still so much more story to tell without wiping away what came before. They only had to look at history for inspiration.

I thought the New Republic was pottayed better in the Bloodline and Aftermath trilogy (which I only read a few months ago) books. Far from competent or untroubled, but I think better than what it is in recent shows. Woo! Farscape! The Expanse is great, just keep in mind the series doesn't finish the whole story because there are three more books of plot left. Worth the read, in my opinion.

With Andor, only thing it needed to do better was to come out before Kenobi, or maybe Book of Boba Fett. I don't care if it is good. If Disney is going to wreck things I like about the George Lucas Star Wars like they did with the sequels or Kenobi I am out, and won't support them anymore.

Yeah, by the time it was out I had no reason to be paying for Disney+. I wasn't going to continue to shell out to follow a series and see if it was potentially going to be good when Disney had already demonstrated so often that they couldn't deliver. I was lost as a customer before Andor even had a chance.

Hey Thor, have you heard about the rumour/'story' about Elon Musk teaming up with Peltz to take over Disney and if so what do you think about it? For me, something drastic has to happen to breathe new life into Star Wars and even though I'm no Muskophile I do think he'd clean house at Lucasfilm and I can't see that being a bad thing. Be interested to hear your and Naboo's opinion on this. Cheers.

When you raised the possibility that Ezra won't be believed by the New Republic, I suddenly got Harry Potter vibes. The New Republic sounds about as incompetent as The Ministry of Magic. Not that it wouldn't make sense for him to not be believed. Just... you know.... the parallels.

So if you read 'Before the Awakening', in the Poe story line, we see how the New Order spread and gained power. Quickly, but it is believable. Not taking this story to the screen was a massive mistake for Disney, and it makes no sense why they wouldn't. It sets up TFA pretty well and provides quite a bit of context for the characters and story. But as I recall, for those curious, the New Order basically took command of imperial planets that the New Republic just didn't have time to get to yet. Then they slowly spread and got planets to switch allegiance. Leia and her cohorts were like" these guys are the new Empire, we have to fight them". And the rest of the Senate, among which there were Imperials and New Order Sympathizers, would state they 'were to weak to go to war,' 'going to war is bad', 'we need to negotiate', basically anything to stop combat and decrease suspicion of the NO. They were portrayed as just another form of government that has a right to exist and people can choose. So they would negotiate and somehow, in an act of fairness, ended up I think letting planets decide if they wanted to be in the New Order or the New Republic. And basically through political manipulation and some backdoor deals, the NO took over a significant part of the galaxy without a shot fired. And this is where Leia started the resistance and recruited Poe in his story from the book. He went on a mission for her to prove the New Order was breaking a treaty in order expose them.

In the novel Bloodlines (also about how the Resistance came to be) we have a few chapters from the viewpoint of a politician who's a member of the First Order. Their original plan had been to reinstate the role of Supreme Chancellor and have one of their own in the position, but thanks to the plot that idea was considered too dangerous by both parties, so their new idea was that the First Order followers would secede from the New Republic. Having somewhere between half to a third (after they removed Centrist members who weren't First Order) of the New Republic leave probably helped boost their numbers and strength too.

@@cybertramon0012 Ah, I read that too, but completely forgot about it. That's the right way to describe it, planets seceding from the NR. You're making my memory work hard as I try to remember that book. I believe the bloodline angle was that Leia's enemies were going to expose her relationship to Vader to discredit her and get her kicked out of the Senate. But she left willingly and officially started the resistance? Sounds right? And lol at me, I called them the New Order.

I’m rewatching all 11 live action sw films and I’m about to begin the good shit the original trilogy, just after finishing rogue one, and hell I even watched solo and loved it, not a perfect film but a damn good time, anyway you especially after andor season 1 (looking forward to 2) rogue one aged really well, you really feel the struggle of the rebellion and now knowing what mon mothma had to give up and do to make this rebellion happen, and also after the downfall of the galaxy in the prequels, it’s so much better when after all 23 years the rebels win and destroy the empire. But seeing just how incompetent and dumb the new republic is, and the fact that Luke isn’t even remotely relevant nor the og trio when fucking thrawn is coming back, is beyond stupid, honestly to me it’s doing more damage by exploring it now then the forde awakens ever could, at least then the 30 years was a massive gap and we didn’t know exactly what the new republic was all about, but now we know they have to make them so incapable to fit the force awakens, its ruins it and makes the empire look like a far more powerful and stable entity then whatever the hell this new republic is, for me i don’t consider anything canon after return if the jedi, maybe mando 1 and 2 but that’s it

The New Republic in all Disney productions is shown as a colossal failure. It wasn't supposed to be so in the EU and in George's vision for the Sequels. They destroyed Luke, the Original Cast and the New Republic so that we could have Rey Skywalker (not Daisy's fault!). It's yet another example of no planning, horrible writing and no concept whatsoever of world building. For instance, in the first movie of the Sequels, Leia could have been shown as being a Senator, and then slowly rising to Supreme Chancellor by the end of the 3rd movie. Luke Skywalker successfully starts a new Jedi movement, but perhaps on a planet other than Coruscant, even though he keeps in regular contact with 'the gang' (Han, Leia, Lando, Chewie, R2D2, C3PO). That's pretty much what I would have liked to have seen as far as the direction of the Sequel Trilogy. It would have added to what has already been established, and provided a full circle with the Prequels.
