Hundreds of thousands of undocumented Afghans living in Pakistan now face arrest and deportation after the government's deadline for them to leave voluntarily expired this Wednesday November 1. Pakistan's interior minister justified his decision, taken in early October, by the number of Afghans involved in recent terror attacks in Pakistan. Some 200,000 Afghans have already left Pakistan voluntarily - albeit often reluctantly - ahead of the November 1 deadline. Our correspondents Shahzaib Wahlah and Sonia Ghezali report.

I have high regard for the Taliban in Afghanistan, but it is unfortunate that their people harbor animosity towards us. Even in Pakistani universities, Afghan girls were granted scholarships for tuition, hostel, transport, and food. However, despite these opportunities, they still displayed hostility towards Pakistan. It is worth noting that their currency held a higher value than the Pakistani rupee, yet they chose to live in Pakistan with resentment in their hearts, while enjoying the freedom to study in top universities here with fully funded scholarships. I had personal experience living with them in a university hostel. I don't hold any hatred towards them, but I do wonder why they choose not to return to their country now that it is free if they hate us so much.

They don't hate us. They are our brothers and sisters. I have Afghans lived in my neighborhood and they are one of the kindest people. We cannot collectively punish the entire afghan population for the actions of a few. We have a notorious history of villifying the minorities. A lot of these people are born here and lived here for so long.

Pakistan is home to over 4million Afghan migrants,about 1.7 million are undocumented. As of October 2023, approx 1.3 million Afghans had Proof of Registration (PoR) cards (which expired in June 2023). Over 2.2 million have sort of documents/temporary residence rights. After over 40 years, of over 4 million, Pakistan is only sending back 1.7m illegal Afghans. Do we Not have the right to document illegal migrants?

Pakistan used to be very refugee friendly until until the independence of Bangladesh (upto a quarter of the population originates from India), before the independence of Bangladesh Pakistan then became less friendly to it particularly regarding East Pakistanis because there were many millions of them and there already were ethnic issues arising in Sindh, but Pakistan did't completly change it's stance until things got out of hand with Afghani ones. Pakistan also has over a million Rohingya, at least about 2 million Bengali proper with questionable status, millions of non-bengali East Pakistanis(mostly Bhojpuri), I am not sure how many Somalis but a lot, previously Lebanese(and Palestinians), Syrians and what not. Out of these lots of East Pakistanis, Bengalis and Rohingya in that order have citizenship at individual but not entire family levels, those families who never had an issue are not included in this. There are as much as 10 million people of Afghan origins but as most of the have managed to pass off as Pakistani (or acquired citizenship legally through proper paperwork of their parents) it's hard to know the exact numbers. it's large enough that the numbers of Pashtuns has to be suppressed in the official figure for places like FATA, Baluchistan and Karachi in that order because they have completely changed the demographics of places like former FATA and to a lesser extent Balochistan. This isn't much of an issue in FATA as it was already overwhelmingly Pashtun, non Sindhis especially of Hindustani ethnicity are already underreported in SIndh due to discrimination by Feudal lords, but in Balochistan Baloch used to be the largest group and now they are the second largest (marginally largest officially with both groups being almost a third). The quoted value of 1.7 million Afghani refugees are only the ones that the government/establishment belives that it can prove. Trouble is that the more honest, poor or non-pashtun a person is (in descending order) the more likely it is that he won't have the necessary documentation, because it's hard to prove that you are from the border or in case of Quetta a native Hazara, if you don't belong to an ethnicity found in Pakistan before the soviet era, don't have criminal connections to fake your ethnicity or rich enough to be UN/Western recognized refuge on their funding with all the required permits so that you can openly be Afghani. . Another problem is that some of the ones with better but not ideal documentation are also often harassed by the police and occasionally evil locals which has led to property fraud in the past. Most criminals and especially terrorist cannot be deported; it's optics towards the Taliban government to get things in order regarding Pakistan, western countries who aren't properly taking care of the old oficial and especially post retreat refugees, and to distract people from local political & especially economic uncertainty. If the largest political party PTI was still in power then things would have been different. Not counting the ones from India, Pakistan has one of the largest refugee population in the world population wise, and probably the highest overall (unless Turkey has upto 15 million in ground realities, which interestingly also had mass migration during it's inception like Pakistan on top of that) but the economy and systems in place are far inferior to western countries, who cause the crises creating most of the refugees in the first place, or even Turkey. So it's more difficult to oppose the deportation in Pakistan besides for Islamic reasons which is becoming increasingly difficult these days, especially with a relatively stable Islamic Emirate in Afghanistan. It's not like Palestinians and Rohingya, no threat of genocide, no civil war, no starvation (relative to Pakistan that is, which is near starvation itself).

Deportation is not problem but they are not allowed to take thei own physical amount more than 5000 Pakistani rp. Most people I have seen that they have terrefying stories. The Pakistani Polices rush to their homes and take all their money and then deport them.
