Good video and analysis. A comment about pike phalanxes if I may. Philip and Alexander developed the Macedon pike phalanx not as the prime striking arm of their armies but simply to hold the centre, their prime striking arm was their cavalry. The hypaspists were used to turn the flanks of the enemy centre and hold of the enemy cavalry, and then the Companions, followed by other lance armed cavalry, charged in at the hinge point. All the phalanx has to do is hold up the enemy centre long enough for the flank movement to take effect. Curiously enough, the Successor generals seemed to have forgotten this and many battles between Successors turned into slugging matches between mass pike phalanxes where "superweapons" in the form of chariots or elephants were introduced to break up what was basically a battlefield stalemate. Thrace doesnt have the cavalry or the hypaspists, but the falxmen are a pretty good substitute. So my strategy is to have 5 or 6 phalanx units (backed by 4 onagers if possible to give a range advantage) and to put a mass of falxman on the left flank - the left flank because that is the shieldless side of the enemy infantry., militia skirmishing cavalry on the right flank. Maneuvering in the face of the enemy is a skill well worth developing as the morale algorithm in RTW is quite effective, see how many enemy units you can get to route as a "cascade" down the line !!

Great commentary and some lovely historical details. It's funny how imitations of great tactics often just water them down rather than improve on them; I see this in sports a lot too.

I always wanted to start a campaign with Thrace but i was scared to face the roman urban cohorts :D your guides are very helpful, thank you!

I'm staring a campaign with Thrace soon. I find their starting position very interesting. Would be cool if they had their equivalent of silver shields like Pontus. Of course, they would have to be Gold Shields.
@ToNerdistoHumanTNH10 ай бұрын
Yeah I silver shield equivalent would be a huge boost for them. I wonder if any mods have such a unit...

I think devs did not place an elite phalanx unit so the player must rely on the barbarian roster, to keep the "hellenic-barbarian flavour". What could have ben done is giving them at least a noble heavy cav unit

Dacia are actually quite a fun one to play. You need to go skirmish, archer and cav heavy but you can get really good results against the helenic factions by keeping them at arms length.

If I'm not mistaken, the warcry adds +10 stats in attack during the warcry, right ? I'm not sure what it does exactly
@ToNerdistoHumanTNH10 ай бұрын
I don't know the numbers but it bumps up your attack and is definitely worth it. If it is 10 then its spectacularly good!

Hi, sorry I'm a tad confused. Why put the falxmen in loose formation ?
@ToNerdistoHumanTNH10 ай бұрын
It's something about the way they wrap around units and hack them apart. They just seem to be much more successful this way.

The thracian General also has better Stats than most others
@johngalt51666 ай бұрын
That can’t be true. I’ve been trying to play a Hard Battle Very hard campaign game as Thrace and I feel like my generals are made of paper. Maybe it’s a skill issue but I am really struggling with the campaign on such high difficulty lol. Normally I can squeeze my way out of anything.

At least in older versions, the late general was a weakened barbarian warlord, but older versions also had stats like +15 in charge bonus for cataphracts and +17 for scythian nobles an sarmatians iirc, then all(by the time of expansions) were topped up in 9, except elephants (my memory may be tricking me in details, but the point is that thrqcian generals were kind of crap in the day)
