Sort of an anthology styled piece based on real stories of how people make their assumptions based on things like appearance and the state of the individual when they're NOT completely crippled by their disabilities. Some people, like me, only leave the house when they're having a good day, so to the people who only see us on those days... we look perfectly fine. It's some kind of bias. Survivor bias maybe? I'm not sure. But it needs to stop. If it helps, if you get that kind of comment again, ask them something like, "Tell me, how old do you think you need to be to get hit by a bus?" It doesn't always fix things, but a lot of people have to suddenly step out of their biases and realise that bad things can happen to anybody at any time.

After some brain damage, I started having an issue where some mornings I couldn't walk. It would vary, but I'd typically be "better" by the end of the day (difficult, but I could walk around if I needed to). Which meant some mornings, I'd walk in to work fine. Other days, I'd be in a wheel chair and lifting myself up into my work chair. The amount of shit I put up with about how I was clearly just seeking attention from coworkers was so infuriating I just started staying home or showing up late on those days.

Yeah, that's not good. But, the dog in the office is a problem. You shouldn't pose a danger to other people or try to dox them and make their life unsafe. But, you also need to keep dogs out of the office, unless 100% in there for good reason. I just think she should find a heart monitor or something, like on a watch. I'd have to see precedent, too, if they did this back in the 80s, because then people were sane. But, I doubt they'd let a service dog in an office for that reason then. But people are increasingly getting worse at training animals, and many supposedly nice dogs have behavioral issue underneath the surface. With people, you can just talk to them, but an animal you can't. So, you never know when they might have enough.

This is such a nonsense take that shows you don't know anything about how to help disabled people or those with serious medical conditions who need more involved aids and treatments. Service dogs of that size can help brace a person collapsing from their condition, like a seizure. One of my professors in university while I got my Master's degree had two service dogs for this exact reason.

I personally would have first asked everyone to get flu and covid vaccinated and send pictures of the confirmation. Then the child (depending on their age) could wear a mask. I think in general it’s the right thing to do to stay home when you are sick REGARDLESS of if there is an immunocompromised kid or not. I personally think holidays are important for child growth and this could be a relatively safe learning opportunity for the child to start to learn how to navigate social situations with a medical condition (once again it depends on that child’s age). If they are old enough to know that you canceled a tradition because of them, it could lead to isolation of the child and that’s also not good. My thought is basically there isn’t enough information to say one way or the other but it could have been handled slightly different.

⁠​⁠​⁠@@carolbaker2773 you’d suggest the child wear a mask in their own home in order to not feel isolated? there’s a physical barrier isolating them from the family. assuming the family members (including those who got upset) would agree to get vaccinated and send legitimate proof, that doesn’t mean they can’t get sick. also, one person wearing a mask doesn’t help as much as everyone wearing one. plus, the dinner would (most likely) be indoors, so at some point the mask would be off and the child would be vulnerable. unless they’re made to eat in a separate room, which is further isolation. OP decided it would be unsafe for their child, and that can teach them to advocate for themselves because of their health condition. just like the story of the coworker “firing herself”, the tradition wasn’t canceled because of the child. the family members arguing with OP over their boundaries canceled the dinner themselves. PS: I agree that it’s good to stay home if you’re sick regardless of if there is an immunocompromised person. Some people don’t care about others so it’s better to err on the side of caution.

Of course, I don't know the level of immunocompromised the child is or their age, both of which could affect decisions. Do we have a child that is 3 on chemo for lymphoma? Then that child gets to stay in a bubble and the event is cancelled. Do we have a 10-yr old that is on corticosteroids because they have uncontrolled allergies? Then I would ask for vaccinations and have my kid wear a mask and ask everyone to also wear one. I personally don't believe that masks are as much of a barrier as most people think (I am a veterinarian and wear one for a minimum of 4 hour a day.) If I cannot trust my family that much, then I would just cancel it. But even my conservative family that didn't believe in covid regulations all put masks on when my 90yr old grandpa came for Xmas and 1 family stayed home because their kid got the flu.

As a bald man who is secure in his baldness, sometimes a hat is needed for various reasons. Without hair, my head gets cold. Hair also blocks some light from blinding you. If the restaurant has annoying flashing lights like, say, from a TV playing a sports game, the hat may prevent a light induced migraine. Not having hair can be nice, it is very refreshing in a cool breeze, but your hair provides so many functions you don't realize until it's gone.

The first story hits home a little. As someone young-ish who also has an 'invisible' disability - people rarely ever take it seriously. You'd think having a trained service dog is visible and legitimizing enough but unless you're like 60+ or have to rely on a wheelchair (which comes with its own plethora of discrimination) there will ALWAYS be at least one certified Asshat trying to "expose" you as a faker and playing down how serious your condition is or can be. My dad is completely blind, and he's had Karens try to get him kicked out of restaurants and stores for having his guide dog with him. Some people demand to see paperwork to "prove" that it's a real guide dog, despite the obvious guide dog harness, my dad obviously being completely blind (he has glaucoma, and you can tell just by looking at his eyes), and the fact that there is no official government documentation to prove that a service dog is a service dog. The worst is when we've waited an hour for a bus just for the driver to not let us on because "dogs aren't allowed" and some bus drivers have gotten really really hostile about it. I was ready to throw hands with em when I was a kid. Thankfully every driver that did that got fired, because not letting a blind man on with his guide dog is illegal, but it's fucked up that we had to wait another hour or just walk miles to get home from the grocery store because of them.

@@Dog_in_tree it’s super sticky because a dog is considered a medical device and right to privacy is suppose to be sacred in the US, but we really need to have more regulations on service dogs to protect the people that need them. I’m a veterinarian and people have come to me asking for a “prescription” service dog paper. Emotional support animals are also causing so much confusion so having defined terms for both is a must IMO. The amount of obviously fake service dogs I see in the airport is astonishing and I get mad because I know the hardships people face that absolutely need those dogs. Certification and registration is what I think needs to happen and a stiff financial fine for anyone forging those papers need to be in place.

I work in a grocery store and I’m constantly astonished at the questions staff and customers ask. One clerk actually said “You blind or something?” (She didn’t last long.) I know people buy vests and lie but as long as the dog is well-behaved, it’s not worth the hassle. If you’re allergic, stay away and the stores are regularly cleaned. It’s not that big of a deal.

Either it was a service dog in training..which I doubt because they’re not brought into the community with those behaviors. And he would have explained that. Or most likely, it was an entitled person who doesn’t care what damage their animal can do. I have a small dog, I can carry her. And while she’s not a registered service animal she has actually learned to sense my neurological episodes and barks at me when I need to lie down. She just naturally learned to sense it without us training her to do so. I have carried her into places saying she’s a service animal if asked, not often but I’ve done it. But I honestly didn’t bring her for that reason.. it was just convenient at that time. If I had any doubt about her behavior.. she would stay home at all times. I also carry her because she’s not trained as a service dog and even though I know she wouldn’t jump on anyone, it’s not worth the risk to others.

On the allergy: I'm dangerously allergic to dogs. One day will be fine but two weeks of (near) daily exposure and I get persistent asthma attacks (I don't even have asthma). OP is a colleague. We'd have conflicting medical needs. One of us would have to be moved. But that doesn't mean OP's service dog is now banned from work, nor is it something we could solve among ourselves. And I'd never report them to HR as a supposed fraud or try to trigger their condition/distract the service dog. That's between me, my doctor and our employer. Also lab grown diamonds are generally MORE pure than "wild" diamonds (in terms of the clarity and amount of imperfections at the molecular level). This is because the equipment used in the labs are able to reproduce a diamond's structure without introducing foreign material. If you love stovetop stuffing, you should consider having it as a leftover as a stuffing waffle by adding more water than it calls for only enough to make a slightly moist dough some leftover mashed potatoes and cheddar cheese to help bind it together once your stuffing is combined with everything mentioned you spray your waffle iron with non stick spray and on its highest setting you cook them until crispy and serve with a turkey omelette smothered in turkey gravy. I don't think the brother ever said it was a natural diamond. According to OP, he just said it was "really unique and super expensive." It's possible he was lying in that statement (maybe he got it for cheaper because it was lab-grown) but I don't think it would even be possible for OP to know he was lying just by looking given they aren't a jeweler. Given the reaction of the fiancee, it seems like maybe she perceived lab-grown diamonds as lesser and as a result felt lied to even if there technically weren't any lies.

With the MIL wing restaurant story I have a couple thoughts. Was he very rude in what he said? Yeah absolutely. Honestly my Oma (grandmother) is like that MIL. She was a straight hateful bitch, but in subtle ways she denied and told us we were "misunderstanding her" when pointed out. My dad knew and warned my mum that his mum was like this. It used to be considered good manners to remove a hat indoors. There's no one reason why but several, including that since hats are meant to protect from the environment wearing them in someone's home or business implied you didn't believe their place was clean or safe enough to remove it and that it might imply you didn't feel welcome. This also used to apply to other outwear like coats/jackets and spats, when people still wore the latter. It's mostly just a holdover nowadays and there probably weren't a ton of people side-eyeing your dad everywhere he went, though he might have had a comment or two. When hats were more common, there were more social rules about them is all.

Hi! You're fragrant sensitive! It's actually super unknown but super common for people to have differing levels of sensitivity to strong scents. Some people get migraines or heart issues or nervous system overreactions or throw up. It doesn't have to be related to the lungs themselves, even. It can also be a thing for many chronically ill people that strong scents will set off their other health issues, even if there's isn't a direct link between them explaining it.
