Toumas (the Keyboards and the person who writes 95% of the music) wrote this after the band fired their first singer Tarja who was a childhood friend of his. The reasons why that happened aren't important but suffice to say Toumas received a lot of hate mail because of it. It came to the point where he was considering committing suicide but after speaking with his parents and friends he decided he would write this song and commit suicide in the song rather than in real life (thank whatever god you subscribe to for that). It is a very emotional song for Toumas and the band don't often perform it, you may have noticed at the end of the song both Marco and Emppu are standing next to Toumas in support. While this was not written for Floor to sing she, as you say, throws all the emotion into it that she can give which is a lot. Most of us in the Nightwish army cry during this song because we know what it means. I personally must have heard it hundreds of times and still need tissues when I listen to it.

I believe that Tuomas was in love with Tarja. I also believe that it hurt him when he had to fired her. That is when Tuomas metaphorically sliced his head from the pain with the Pendulum. Tuomas is the Poet and Pendulum is used to cut the pain.

they knew each other very briefly as teenagers...reason he was lambasted was because he published an ugly bunch of lies designed to trash Tarja and her manager, before the world, out of spite and jealousy....he could not care less about Tarja or he would have shown her more respect and attention...

@@MrTech226 ... he is such a transparent drama queen...what he was feeling was anger and jealousy at her and her husband, whom he considered an "Argentinian interloper", and whose "cultural differences" as he put it, drove Tarja to turn against the band..conveniently ignoring previous years of unfulfilled promises to her, from the band...she finally informed him for over a year in advance of finally deciding to go solo and that gave him the courage to completely disregard her as the heart of the band...

I see how you can find the sudden changes of "mood" in this performance confusing, especially when at such a young age. But to put it simple.... Tuomas the gentleman with long dark hair at the piano and keyboards, wrote and composed this song. About his own depression. And depression comes and goes as it pleases,so the light parts in this song is when friends and family are talking to Tuomas, comforting him, making him feel better about himself. The darker areas of the song is depression,anger....just negative thoughts. This is simply a masterpiece in and about mental health. I hope noone of you 3 ever get depression,as it is an exhausting "state of mind" type of illness. Not really a sickness like viruses etc,but a "head and nerve illness". But listening to alot of music wich im sure you do,you will hear alot of lyrics written in a dark state of mind. Writing songs or just writing down theyr thoughts,is good theraphy for alot of people. Tuomas is a much happier, healthier man today....thats why he doesnt want to play this song live anymore,as it gives him too many bad memories. Floor is really emotional throughout this song,as she sings for her friend Tuomas. At the very end when she is allmost finished singing, you can see her blink her eyes very rapidly to fight her tears back.....then she ends with looking over at Tuomas,to check if he is okay. They all know this song means alot to him, thats also why Marco and Emppu came over to him to show support and friendship towards the end. This band has the best chemistry ever, they dont treat eachother like friends, but family!😍

"The Poet and the pendulum" from Nightwish is a beautiful masterpiece telling a very sad story. In 2005 the band fired the first singer, Tarja. Tarja and Tuomas (the composer of 95% of the songs) met each other in the childhood, years before the band founded. Tarja has been literally idolized by the fans who became angry and blamed Tuomas for the dismissal. The fans dropped the band and Tuomas felt into a deep depression. The song is an emotional rollercoaster. Tuomas is the subject of this song. he's the Poet. Tuomas put words of his own parents in the last part Mother and Father. The song has 5 parts : I. White Lands Of Empathica II. Home III. The Pacific IV. Dark Passion Play V. Mother and Father

I bet since childhood, Tuomas was in love with Tarja, but Tarja and Tuomas are not talking about it. Don't be sad for Tarja because she went back to sing Opera. Nightwish replaced Tarja with Anette Olzon. Anette sing for number of years until 2013 Floor stepped in place for tour. After the tour, Floor Jansen became official member of Nightwish. If you like this, try Nightwish new album, Human Nature. 1st disc has 9 songs and 2nd has one long song divided into eight parts. Tuomas written most of all for Human Nature. Nightwish released I think all 9 songs from Human Nature's Disc 1 on KZbin.

Everyone does their lighter songs, but they have a surprisingly heavy side as well. Can you do either "Romanticide" from Wacken 2013 or "Yours is an Empty Hope" from the Wembley 2015 concert? It would show you another side of the band and show off a whole other range of Floor's abilities.

As you girls delve deeper on your journey of discovery down the "rabbit hole," you'll start to have a better understanding of all kinds of music (and I would urge you to experience as many different kinds of music as you can...some you'll really love, some you won't. At least give a listen to em all and decide for yourselves what sounds best to you). I'm in my mid-fifties and have been a music fan since I was old enough to care. I've got over two hundred concerts under my belt, from gigs in bars that had a dirt floor (lol, I'm not kidding) to huge arena and stadium shows. From Folk music to Speed/Thrash Metal stuff and everything in between. I'm actually a bit jealous of you girls getting to hear stuff for the first time...and that's pretty cool. Sorry to sound like I'm preaching. Lol, I guess it comes with age. Anyway, I'll leave you with this..."discovery" only happens once, so kick back and enjoy. Keep the vids coming. You're already head and shoulders above most "reactors" I've seen (Again, tell your parents, elders, or whoever it is responsible for what you're doing, to give themselves a pat on the back for giving you this wonderful gift of music).

Greetings from Finland, the home country of NIghtwish and thousands of other metal bands. In fact Finland has by far the highest number of metal bands per 1M inhabitants - no other country comes even close. This was a great way to really jump start my day watching you three react to Nightwish & one of the greatest songs - so thanks. I didn't have the time to read all the other comments, so someone may have already told you this: If you start a timer when the young boy's voice says "Now I only have three minutes and counting...." and stop the timer when Tuomas figuratively cuts his throat with his hand, the timer will show 3 minutes, give or take a few seconds, depending on when you actually managed to start & stop the timer based on those two ques.

This song was written by Tuomas in response to them having to let Tarja go from the band. He wrote this song as a form of virtual suicide as he was in a very dark place at the time. If you notice, all three of Marko, Floor and Emppu go over to check on him throughout the song, as it is one of the ones that is very emotional for him. There is a lot of depth in the lyrics that you may not have seen, but they all convey a lot of the emotions he had going on at the time.

Al principio me sorprendió un poco que reaccionaran a una canción tan oscura, pero lo hicieron muy bien. Me agrada mucho la forma en que siguen y disfrutan cada segmento, y la manera en que lo sienten. Saludos chicas!!!!

I'm still thinking in how powerful Rock music is that generation after generation it still reaches young kids. I have a daughter of your age and wish she could appraise good music as you do. Congratulations for your channel girls and for your sensibility for good music. Very good comments!

Others have told you the backstory to this song. Well done for choosing this song. You have another subscriber from Australia! Welcome to Nightwish! It is a wonderful ride and you will never regret it! Have people told you who plays what? Tuomas plays keyboards and writes most of the music, Marko with the beard plays bass (and SINGS!), Emppu plays guitar (and is quite short - he's 5ft 3inches and Floor is 6ft 1 inch tall before she puts on her boots!), Kai plays drums - it used to be Jukka but he had to change to the admin side of the band for health reasons, the Valkyrie/Angel/Siren singing is Floor Jansen.

Absolutely love your reaction videos! It is really obvious how honest you are about your reactions, keep it up! The Poet and the Pendulum is probably my favourite Nightwish song btw (though I hadn't heard it sung by Floor before, only by the previous singer Anette Olzon) I would be ecstatic if you'd also react to one of my other fav bands, Within Temptation. I recommend the songs 'The Truth beneath the Rose' and 'Angels'. They're in the Symphonic rock/Gothic rock genre.

You're right that Marco (bassist with the long hair) and Floor sing really well together, in fact you havn't heard the best of that aspect of Nightwish yet. Try Romanticide from the Wacken 2013 concert (fast and heavy) or Kiss While Your Lips Are Still Red from Wembley 2016 (romantic). For Marco pretty much on his own (with a little backing from Floor): The Islander from Tampere 2015 (folky).

I was there that night in Wembley, still suffering from the tail end of the 'flu but there was no way I was ever going to miss this show! This song was one of the highlights of the night, not only for its epicness but the sheer emotion of the performance. I'm so glad this show was recorded for posterity for others such as yourselves to enjoy rather than just confined to the 12,000 of us who were there. Hoping to be back at Wembley in December to see them again (virus permitting).

The singer from Nightwish, Floor Jansen was on a Dutch show last year called Beste Zangers. She sang in different genres and languages. She even sings in Spanish on a song called "Que Se Siente". It was originally salsa but she made it rock.

Floor goes between a head voice and a chest voice. She has had classical operatic training. She can sing anything. And her breath control is beyond belief. This song is a total soul crusher for Tuomas. You won't see them do this very often. It's a magnificent piece, and a real crowd pleaser, but it causes Tuomas real pain.

In the top comments you could've read about the background of this song and to whom is it dedicated - their first singer Tarja Turunen. Nightwish established their sound and gained major worldwide success with her (she sang on band's first 6 (!) albums), her voice helped defining not just the Nightwish sound but the symphonic metal genre in general. So, for the next reaction video choose some of the live performances with her - I'd recommend Dark Chest of Wonders or Ever Dream from End of an era concert in 2005, just to get you hooked on Tarja, and then you'll want more and more :) Floor is an out of this world goddess and a mind blowing surreal singer, but Tarja is Tarja, and you'll see why :) And the most important thing - I LOVE YOUR REACTIONS! It's so soothing to watch youngsters getting SO excited and thrilled because of NW, takes me back 16 years ago when I first discovered them - so emotional! Keep doing this and keep enjoying it! :)

Sorry to be a bit nitpicky but Tarja „only“ sang on the bands first 5 albums. Angels fall first, Ocean Born, Wishmaster, Century Child and Once, Dark Passion Play is the sixth album. Over the hills is only an EP

@@robertschneider8808 @Robert Schneider I was counting that EP as well, of course I know there's regular five studio albums with Tarja. No need for correcting someone who's been an extreme fan of the band for 16 years, as it's aforementioned :)

Hey girls! your joy is infectious. Its so much fun to see you three having such a fun time with GREAT music! a fun, old school band to react to is Van Halen. their videos are typically better than live but, I think you will get a kick out of their songs. react to Jump, or Hot For Teacher for starters. The guitarist, Eddie VanHalen, and Singer, David Lee Roth inspired a whole era of music. They are without a doubt one of the most important bands of all Rock history. Keep up the good work and don't loose that wonderful enthusiasm!!
