Three Months of Baby Mwana | Sheldrick Trust

Three months ago, a little miracle landed in our midst. Not only is Mwana the first wild baby born to our Umani Springs herd, but she is also the daughter of Murera, who is perhaps our greatest orphan success story.

Established in 1977, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT) operates the world’s most successful orphan elephant rescue and rehabilitation program, rescuing and hand-rearing orphaned elephants and other animals that have lost their mothers, all too often as a result of human activity. But we do much more than this. Through our Aerial, Anti-Poaching and Mobile Veterinary Units, we safeguard the natural environment and provide immediate assistance to wild animals in need. We also secure irreplaceable wilderness areas so that animals will always have space to roam and work with local partners and communities to ensure people and wildlife can live alongside one another.

+Alison It's a good thing because how majestic the African bush elephant (Loxodonta Africana) is and especially since they're listed as endangered by IUCN, National Geographic and Disneynature are protecting them along with Africa's other iconic yet also threatened animals, birds and marine mammals.

Murera has to pace herself and move a bit more slowly bc the injuries she sustained as a baby have left her compromised and she will always have the affects from them so running isn’t feasible for her as it is for her rambunctious little girl;as a result she keeps to the back of the herd when they’re on the move often bringing up the rear to oversee everything which is typical matriarch behavior. Murera knows that her dedicated friends/Mwana’s allomother’s will be right there to run with the little princess when she’s not able to.🐘🌸🌟

The people at Sheldrick Trust create miracles every day. They take babies who have been traumatized by the deaths of their mothers, drought, attacks by humans or other animals... and turn them into happy and healthy adult elephants. This is why I love and adore elephants. When life is peaceful, baby ellies like Mwana show their happiness by playful antics and being silly. This is the way ALL elephants should live - without fear, without being threaten, without distress. But because their habitat is being fragmented and/or destroyed, because human-elephant conflicts sometimes end in death of an elephant, because of poaching, and because of the elements of drought, disease and predation of the young, the true way of living affects elephants in so many ways. The dynamics of elephant families being noble, honorable and virtuous calls into mind the strength of family bonds. May we strive to learn from them. Thank you SWT for being a vital and important rescue link to the orphans that start life in a precarious manner and through your dedication they become the confident elephants they were meant to be.
