She does a great job acting. Unconscious going in, then a slow return to consciousness. The confusion about her situation at first. She instinctively looks up still not comprehending her situation. Then slowly her eyes pan over the ropes binding her arms and then her legs. Slowly (and that is the key) slowly it dawns on her. The panic first appears in her eyes. The disbelief. Then the slow panic that builds until she is almost free only to find that one more rope binds her. But she doesn't have anymore life left in her and the resignation of her situation. Love it.

The recent music video for Highly Suspect's latest single Lydia falls into the category of, "I can't believe this exists." It's shot in realtime, and the entirety of its four-minute run time features an actress tied down at the bottom of a pool, trying her damnedest to break free. The first question you're probably asking yourself is, "How on earth can anyone hold their breath that long?!" Well, the actress in this video is actually world champion freediver Marina Kazankova. Here's TS&R to explain why she was the perfect choice for this production: Marina Kazankova, former freediving champion and world record holder, is best known underwater for her ‘dynamic breath hold’, or the ability to athletically move and exert energy while holding her breath. On land, Marina is also an actress and global traveler, speaking several languages (quadrilingual), and once we heard Marina could swim the length of almost four Olympic-sized swimming pools... on a single breath, we knew we had found our character. The final video was take 6 of 8.

All the symbols in this video from the ticking clock to the key she wears around her neck and the ropes that hold her in place mirror the lyrics perfectly. Feeling trapped and like your drowning as your life is just passing you by and you can’t seem to escape the prison even though you’re the key fucking A. Every line of this song hits me so hard. Dancing with your ghost, the hungry shark, the only one who could talk to him just couldn’t swim, of course the line “I can’t fucking breathe much less believe the “truth”. Just hearing this in 2022. You just keep letting yourself sink deeper, keep wasting the limited opportunity you have to save yourself before it's too late. I love this song with my entire being. I have a dark past and background with family members forcing hard drugs in me as a child and having their way with me. I’m haunted to this day and even the law has failed me. I was assigned this song by a family member to describe what he did to me. It was chemical and psychological warefare instilled into me as a child. It sucks that’s why he gave me this song but goddamn it’s a beautiful song that perfectly depicts it. Thank you guys for never sugar coating or playing music that makes other people happy. This is music about real shit.

@blortonadler95756 жыл бұрын
Amazing, when you listen to the song alone it conveys one message, but then when you listen to it alongside the video you get something a little different. The video opens with the sounds of a ticking clock, water, breathing, and the sound of submersion, presumably the girl tied up under water. This represents the moment a person enters modern life. For the first portion of the video, the girl stays still under water with her eyes closed. At first, in her trust of the world around her, she fails to see the danger she is really in if she fails to take action. This is also supported by the fact that the first chorus, which happens during this portion of the video, cuts off prematurely right before the words "the truth". Eventually, she opens her eyes and looks around her, but still trusts the world around her. This is supported by the line in the chorus talking about how unafraid the singer was in his youth. Eventually, one of the ropes tieing her down makes itself known by tugging on her right arm. This represents the darker aspects of modern life that tie us all down making itself known to her. After being made to know of one of the things tieing her down, she looks around and examines the other things tieing her down. At first she continues to trust the world around her, perhaps thinking that some outside force will come to save her, but fear slowly overtakes her face as she realizes the danger she is in and that the only one who can help her out of this danger is herself. At the moment of this realization, she suddenly and instantly enters into a panic, flailing helplessly, wasting the precious bits of her breath that represent the ever-passing time we all have in which to live our lives. After quite some time wasted flailing pointlessly, she finally begins to realize what has to happen before she is able to escape her grim fate and live her life as she sees fit, she finally realizes that she must remove the things that tie her down herself. Her first goal is achieved with ease as she frees her left arm and has a brief moment of triumph before being reminded how difficult gaining her freedom from her fate will be as she immediately fails her next goal, the tie on her right arm. She quickly abandons this goal, perhaps feeling she must become stronger first by removing all the other ties she noticed earlier in life. After undoing the ties on both of her legs, she finally has the strength to overcome that which she failed to overcome before, this time with greater ease then any previous ties. After overcoming everything she could perceive that was holding her back, keeping her from finally being able to breathe, she tries to come up for air but still cannot. She soon realizes that this must mean there is something else holding her back, causing her to drown. The one place she had not looked when finding things that tied her down was at herself, at her core. She then moves the flowing garment she is dressed in that obscures her view of herself to find one final tie holding her back, tied around her waist. This is the largest of all the ties she was bound by and exists at the very core of her being. The last thing she must overcome to be able to breathe, to be able to live the life she wants in the modern world, is herself. The video fades out as she struggles to save herself from herself and it is unclear if she succeeds and finally gets to breathe or if she drowns in this world having wasted too much time in her early life to be able to overcome herself along with everything else in her way in the end. The lyrics suggest that she ultimately fails, but the video is left open-ended, which further suggests that this is a message about the way life can go for any of us. Not everyone will be able to overcome themselves so they can finally breathe. Some of us will drown, some of us will escape, but we all must overcome the ties that bind us before we are able to truly breathe.
