Hey Justin, if you ever get a chance to return could you take more time to discuss the gold mop hedge? It’s so unusual to see them left to grow to their full size and there’s so few videos showing the true width and height they can get if left to grow. Most everyone prunes them. I love the natural shape! Keep up the great conifer tours. Thanks!

ms dana, great idea. I love gold mops too. (gold threadleaf cypress) Many people are skeptical of them due to just how big they can get so thought I'd mention there is a couple of varieties available now that only grow up to 3 to 4 feet. Kings Gold probably being the most available. The old fashioned type can easily be kept smaller with occasional pruning. I have one that I keep pruned in a tight Christmas tree form and I just love it!! But like you, I just love to see them grow naturally big and tall. Thanks for watching

Love these tours! Being able to see each species in the ground is mounds of help in terms of making the right choices for your own garden/property. Also, I probably mention this every time I comment and here I go again, but I work on a tree and shrub farm (Cabin Creek Farm) zone 6. And I wanted to share the fact that we were visited by an accredited arborist who said we have the largest Persimmon tree in the state. I thought that was cool and just wanted to share with my dudes. P.S. I loved that "royal" wave Bruce gave us at the beginning. Cracked me up!

Someone needs to tell Mr. Wells that is NOT the way to prune back a Obsession Nandina or any Nandina’s for that matter!!! That just looked horrible being meatballed like that. They have a natural beautiful compact shape & in order to size control you have to go & cut back the inner canes. It would have been smarter to plant a Blush Pink instead which is shorter.
@peyote777
@peyote777 5 ай бұрын
Good observation! Still think the smaller, more showy little flirt nandina would be the better variety. Cane plants should be pruned for shape, not size, making a uniform, formal look a challenge. I’ll prune them taking out the stems and we’ll see what they look like next time.

Question: we planted native dogwoods 10 years ago. The trees look gorgeous. But, in the spring they never bloom. Help! We love the trees but would also like blooms. We have done everything our local nursery has suggested.
@bruceduncan1792
@bruceduncan1792 10 ай бұрын
Karen, problems with native dogwoods are numerous and hard to diagnosis without specific info. But here are some common issues to consider. Too much sun. Native dogwoods typically grow as understories in forested area's. Getting dappled sunlight. Too much light can affect budding. Too much Nitrogen. If yours's are planted in the yard where you fertilize grass this could explain the issue you're having. Grass fertilizer is high in N. Too much water retention. Especially If the soil is heavy and clay like. Again, in a forest setting the soil is drained well from the roots of larger tree's. Several Pest issues, sawfly being usual. The larvae of this moth will eat the buds off early in the year, preventing blooming. There are several fungal issues that plague dogwood as well. In this case I would get a local extension agent out to see specifically what's going on. Thanks so much for watching.
